NATURE’S PAGEANT ON THE SERENGETI PLAINS

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Tanzania’s Serengeti—the “endless plains” of the Masai warriorsand herdsmen who have roamed its trackless grasslandsfor centuries—forms the heart of a unique ecosystem thatencompasses the neighboring Ngorongoro Conservation Areaand Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve. Within its5400 square miles, the Serengeti offers a diversity ofnatural habitats—short-and tall-grass savannas, acacia woodlands, forests alongside rivers and wetlands—that provide sanctuary forthe greatest variety and number of game animals on earth.

The key to the vitality of the Serengeti lies in the seasonalmigrations of its wildlife in a rhythmic cycle triggered by thecoming of the rains between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara. Each year, by November, the Serengeti’s savannas have beenreplenished with a fresh growth of succulent grasses and herbs;and more than one million wildebeest and countless zebra, gazelle and other grazing animals begin yet another southerly250-mile-long trek from the Masai Mara to the Serengeti, returning just in time for the January and February calving season, the prime time to view the herds in Tanzania. Commencing in May,at the end of the mating season, the cycle reverses as anew generation of these incredible herds trek back north toward theMasai Mara, repeating nature’s pageant of migration and birth.
