Circus Ruska Festival is the oldest contemporary circus festival in Finland arranged yearly. In January 2013, it will celebrate its 9th anniversary. The festival brings together new contemporary circus acts for your enjoyment. Tampere Kuplii Comics Festival is a five-day comics merry-ment in central Tampere – bringing together comic makers and enthusiasts from around Finland. The festival hosts sales tables, comics magazines, talk shows, Cosplay-com-petition and comics signings. Every year, Tampere Kuplii awards the Comic-Finlandia prize to the most commend-able domestic comic album. The festival is free for all.

Tomatoes! Tomatoes! Stand up Comedy Festival takes place in Tampere for the 5th time. The venues include the Old Tampere Customs House of Pakkahuone, Ilves Bar&Night, TTT-Klubi and Teerenpeli. The programme showcases names of Finnish Stand Up such as Ismo Lei-kola, Ilari Johansson, Anitta Ahonen and Arimo Mustonen.

Exploring Art is an art event that reaches the whole of the Tampere Region. It is being held for the 9th time. The pur-pose of the event is to bring the work of visual artists, de-signers and artisans closer to a large audience and make both experiencing and purchasing art more accessible. All attractions of the festival are free of charge. Exploring Art is arranged by Taidesuunnistus association.

Orivesi Summer Festivals is an annual celebration en-compassing a variety of happenings, with concerts and literary events at the Orivesi College of Arts, an exhibi-tion at the Purnu Art Centre and SuviDesign, the Rönni Open Air Theatre programme, and regular open-air dances from May to September at the Rönni Entertainment Centre. Reikäreuna Film Festival offers cinematic experiences in early September.

Annikki Poetry Festival, celebrating its 10th anniversary, has grown to be one of the most significant poetry events in Finland. With the focus remaining on poetry, the festival also reaches towards music and the arts. Significant for-eign poets are also always heard at the event. The theme for 2013 is ‘the World beneath our Feet’. The festival is held in the wooden quarters of Annikki. Annikki OFF fills Tampere with cultural events for three days before the festival.

A feast of choirs and vocal ensembles takes place every second year in Tampere for five days with the international festival attracting around two thousand performers from all around the world. In addition to a diverse range of con-certs, music is in the air with a broad choral review and an astounding contest for vocal ensembles. Courses of the highest quality provide opportunities to explore the secrets of making music. The series of free concerts entitled “Feel the Festival” takes the performances from the concert halls to the streets.

The highly revered heavy and hard rock festival Sauna Open Air is back – returning to the venue where it all began, in the festival park of Ratina Stadium. The two-day festival is being held 8th – 9th of June. This year the festival brings the Danish group Volbeat, with their one and only concert in Finland this summer. The stage is also heated by Nightwish, Opeth, Sabaton and Children of Bodom.

Mänttä Art Festival celebrates its two decades in 2013. Curator Jyrki Siukonen is putting up an exhibition of both clarity and surprise. The whole of the exhibition speaks for itself, also giving voice to single pieces. The curator aims at getting close to the audience, who bring the exhi-bition alive with experience. Pekilo is once more set for the viewer, so come along!

The 8th Musiikkia! Ruovesi Chamber Music Festival takes place from 26th until 30th June with conductor-violinist Okko Kamu taking the artistic lead. The concerts of 2013 are themed with Bach and Russian music. The venues of the concerts are the picturesque churches of Ruovesi, Virrat and Kuru as well as the Pekkala Manor former stable. The first ever symphony concert in the history of Ruovesi Church takes place on 8th July, with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Okko Kamu, playing the music of Sibelius.

Mänttä Music Festival celebrates its fifteen years of in-ternational star pianists, young promising performers and top pedagogues. The theme of the year takes the audien-ce through the history of piano music with Jerome Rosen, Henri Sigfridson and the hugely popular performer Severin von Eckardstein of last year among others. The setting of this artistic town creates a fine stage for the concerts, lec-tures and master classes at local churches and the histo-rical Mänttä Club.

The Days of Old Literature has the theme of Morale in 2013. This literary event, traditionally taking place on the Friday and Saturday after Midsummer, provides a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the offerings of about 60 booksellers and over 40 displays, in addition to the in-teresting and contemporary theme seminars, exhibitions, an auction and events for children. The festival is free of charge.

A city festival for everyone in Tampere. This city festival, more than a decade old, will be held on 28th June – 6th July 2013. The festival tent in the Central Square and clubs around the city centre offer more than 30 events, more than half of which are free of charge. The programme consists of concerts for children and young people, events for seniors, performances by choirs and dance groups, popular music and rock evenings, and entertaining sing-alongs.

Tammerfest fills the streets, clubs, restaurants and ven-ues of Tampere in the middle of the most glorious summer. This four-day festival offers the highlights of domestic music, stand-up comedians and the most up-and-coming names of Finnish music in an enjoyable urban environ-ment, all within walking distance. Tammerfest can be heard both indoors as well as out. It will bring over 200 shows to over 15 clubs of various sizes, as well as the Ratina Stadium – with the festival atmosphere reaching the skies!

Let early music take hold of you in the enchanting con-certs of Sastamala Gregoriana. The tunes of the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque fill Sastamala at the end of July for the 18th time. The front-row artists of both do-mestic and international arenas give concerts in the me-dieval stone churches, renowned for their atmosphere and acoustics, surrounded by a national cultural landscape. The theme of the summer is the Mesenates of Music – the Popes, Princes and Patrons. The concert series will be completed by an international master course.

Tampere Flamenco Festival is the largest and oldest fla-menco festival in the Nordic region. It is internationally acknowledged and well regarded in the homeland of fla-menco, Spain. Most rising and shining stars of the world flamenco scene have performed here, as have important Finnish flamenco artists.

The radiant and modern four-day Workers’ Music Festival in Valkeakoski showcases top performers and interesting novelties, exhibitions, programmes for children and the young, nightly sing-alongs, open-air dances and highlights of workers’ music. The annual Tampere Theatre Festival is a major European theatre event presenting the best of Finnish and interna-tional theatre. The forte of this festival is in the original 20th century dramas, renewed classics, dance theatre, contemporary circus and street theatre. The festival is composed of five extravagant programmes of the Main Programme, the Programme Tent, Club Festival Encore-baana, OFF Tampere, and a special event night called the Nocturnal Happening.

This year’s theme of Pentinkulma Literature Festival is the Outcasts and the In Crowd. This traditional event brings together thousands of literary lovers. World of Tango festival is the international event of the autumn, embracing many walks of the artistic realm. At the heart of the event is the art of tango and sustaining it – the concerts present top-quality domestic and inter-national artists. Also other genres of urban folk music are represented, such as jazz, chanson and fado. In addition to the concerts, the programme offers art exhibitions, po-etry recitals, dance courses, film screenings, lectures… Pre-programme is 6th – 12th, Art Exhibitions 1st – 30th and Wine and Beer Fiesta 6th – 15th September.

Blockfest is an urban festival geared toward hip-hop mu-sic. In 2013, the festival is celebrating its 6th anniversary. Monsters of Pop is an indie music festival that showcases the freshest, trendiest and most interesting Finnish indie groups, as well as top international names. The musical content of the programme tends to lean toward electronic music and more artistic pop music. Recently the festival has also included supplementary programmes from, for example, the world of cinema.

Dance Mania delights the senses! Expert folk dancers meet young performers at Tampere’s Dance Mania. Mania presents the most delightful treats of folk dancing with performers coming from all over Finland and the Nordic countries. Stages are filled with both professional dance theatres as well as amateur ensembles with tasty mor-sels of current folk dance. The open discussion forum of the Dance Mania takes a close look at the evaluation of dance and choreographers will compete in their own dance events.

The international programme of Tampere Jazz Happening brings together top performers of modern jazz, as well as trend-setters of the future of modern jazz. Lost In Music is an annual urban festival held in down-town Tampere, where approximately 100 artists perform for an audience of nearly 15,000 in the best clubs and other venues. The festival showcases up-and-coming pop, rock, indie, metal bands, hip-hop vibes and world music, not forgetting the more experimental groups. Lost In Music is a unique live event, serving a broader selection of to-day’s music than any other festival in Finland.

The objective of MURROS is to create a venue of high-qual-ity theatre, including national and international youth pro-ductions that are open to all. The event showcases mainly theatre produced by theatre-makers of ages ranging from 13 to 20 years. We wish to offer the audience interesting and high-quality performances, create a forum through which young theatre activists can connect, provide train-ing, and promote international communication through an exchange of productions, directors and trainers.

Mukamas Theatre will host the 9th International Puppet Theatre Festival on 12th – 17th of May in 2014, in Tampere. During the festival week, puppetry takes over the stages of Tampere, offering performances for children, the young and the young at heart. In addition to national highlights, the festival showcases interesting guests from the puppetry traditions of Central Europe and the other Nordic countries, for example.

Pispala Schottische – International Folklore Festival 11–15 June 2014, Tamperewww.sottiisi.net

The international folk dancing festival Pispala Schottische gathers together folk dancers and players from all over the world to Tampere. International and domestic folklore groups perform in various parts of the city. The Handicraft Market at the Central Square, with its programme, offers extra flare to Schottische atmosphere. The event culminates with thousands of dancers bringing colour to Pyynikki as they celebrate folk dancing. Pispala Schottische is arranged by Nuorisoseurajärjestö and Tampere City Council.

Triennial of Pirkanmaa is a showcase of contemporary art in the Tampere Region, held every three years. The 6th Triennial of Pirkanmaa will take place in 2015. Its theme, date and curator will be announced at the end of 2014.

Backlight Photo Festival is an international triennial pho-tographic event that focuses on issues of the society both with documentary photography and more experimental approaches. The festival seeks to promote intercultural dialogue through the visual arts. The theme and guides for applying for 2014 will be announced later. The Tam-pere-based Photographic Centre Nykyaika has organised the event since 1987.
