This issue is all about living life to the fullest. Brenda and her family prove that seeking out new adventures and experiences can lead to a fulfilling life. We hope you are as amazed as we were when we entered their Tuscan-inspired home on the shores of Keystone Lake. It was a pleasure to hear about their adventure to transform a 1960s ranch into the energetic home you see today.

In addition to the Sproats, this issue features a trio of homeowners who set out on their own adventures to create homes to complement their busy lifestyles. One couple decided to downsize to an energy efficient Craftsman home, while the other two couples revamped their aging kitchens to accommodate their families.

2012 is an extra special year for Housetrends, as we celebrate the start of our tenth year showcasing spectacular homes here in Tampa Bay. It is our goal to continue the tradition of highlighting the hottest home and garden trends in the industry.

Keep an eye out for our next issue, set to arrive in mailboxes in mid-March. In the meantime, stay up-to-date with the latest trends on Housetrends.com and on our Tampa Bay Facebook page.

Sincerely,

Judy and Bob DeLuca and the Housetrends staff

Driving through the

up to Bella villa, the more than

4,000-square-foot Tuscan lake

home of Jeff and Brenda sproat,

you would never guess that this

elegant residence was once a small

1960s ranch. “We waited 21 years

to move to Keystone lake,” laughs

Brenda. “The lake is the reason

we’re here, and our architect rob

Glisson is the reason we had the

courage to renovate.”

Rough and tumble lifestyleThe Sproats and sons Jason, 22, and Adam, 19, plus golden retriever Wrigley are an active, outdoor family. After raising the boys in a gated community when they were younger, the couple began the search three years ago to achieve their dream of a home that would fit their sports-oriented lifestyle and accommodate future grandchildren whenever they came along. Since Keystone Lake in Odessa is a popu-lar spring-fed, sandy-bottomed lake with lots of boating, tubing and water skiing, much of the existing housing for sale was either too large or too expensive, so it took persistence and timing to find just the right lot. However, the existing house on this perfect lot needed an “extreme” makeover.

Architect Rob Glisson, AIA, co-principal along with partner John Saldaña of ROJO Architecture LLC in Tampa, has been Jeff ’s golfing buddy since 1988 and had recently converted his own home from a ranch to an American Craftsman style. So, since the Sproats had never undertaken such a renovation before, they turned to Glisson to guide them through the process. “Rob is an amazing architect,” says Brenda. “The process he used made sure the house would be 100% what we wanted and fit our personality.” Saldaña explains that an architectural project is usually comprised of three elements: the site itself, the own-ers’ needs and tastes, and the architect’s design expertise. In the case of a renova-tion, the existing house is a fourth ele-ment. “This was not a ‘remodel.’ It was a reassessment of the entire property,” he says. “There’s a lot of unpredictability—you never know what you will find—but these constraints sometimes lead to bet-ter results.”

24 housetrends.com

Glisson started the process by advising the Sproats to look through books and show him what they liked. Tuscan won out. Brenda had two primary objectives for the home: she wanted it to be elegant, yet warm and inviting, and practical, with no wasted space. “We have a rough and tumble lifestyle so I need low maintenance. We eat, play games, and entertain all at the same table,” she says.

The rustic Tuscan décor of stone arches, exposed beams and lintels, custom-designed brackets, faux-painted walls, and floors of hand-chiseled, distressed engineered wood change from warm earth tones in daytime to shimmering surfaces at night. Glisson points out the variety of ceiling heights throughout the house, in some places lifted from 8 feet to 20 feet, as a critical element of the renovation. “It’s not how high the ceilings are but the change in height from room to room that gives visual interest,” he notes.

A variety of interestsSaldaña indicates that the flow of the house was tailored specifically for the Sproats’ life-style. From the elegant entrance, foyer and dining space to the casual family room, game area and outdoor room leading to the resort-like pool, putting green, lakeside beach and boat dock, a visitor gets a sense of the family’s many interests.

Brenda cooks and Jeff grills, so the kitchen was important for entertaining family and friends. For appliances, they chose the GE Monogram series featuring a smooth cooktop with pop-up downdraft vent and immediate cooling, double wall ovens, a convection microwave, warming drawer and side-by-side refrigerator. The deep hammered copper farm sink was Brenda’s first kitchen purchase, which she loves for its low maintenance. A built-in coffee station is especially convenient in the mornings and an appliance garage keeps countertops neat and tidy.

Glisson suggested a contrast of dark and light cabinetry to give the sense of a Tuscan kitchen that had evolved over time. Tampa-based The Kitchen Director installed dark brown and Crème Mocha Wellborn cabinetry. The perimeter cabinets are topped with natural quartz counters, while the island features Cambria’s Victoria quartz. Even the

cabinet hardware is different—a sturdy design for the maple doors and drawers and more delicate handles for the crème mocha cabinets. Regardless of finish, all drawers are soft-close, which Brenda adores.

The sleeping areas consist of the master suite, a bedroom for each son, and a guest room. Formerly the garage, the master bedroom, which is the only room in the house that is carpeted, features large walk-in his and her closets and even a unique closet just for Brenda’s shoes. Chandeliers and heavy custom doors add to the luxury. The master bath has an extremely high

tower ceiling over the open shower stall. High windows and a chandelier even in the shower give a special sophistication to this room. Brenda’s stained glass window with a design of red poppies provides a punch of color. Jeff recalls his neighbors’ interest in the tall tower with small win-dows, naming it a “giraffe feeder” before they learned it was a shower.

Fun for allA major family interest is baseball, as evidenced by the game room wall dedi-cated to photos of the two boys at various stages of their athletic development plus an occasional photo of Dad, who coached them through middle school. Above the pool table, the coffered ceiling features a steel structure, created by Stack Design, inspired by a home plate with baseball-sized spheres connecting the five-sided shapes. Even the outdoor fire bowl by the pool sits on a base shaped like home plate.

No one is forgotten in this family…even Wrigley. The vertical pet door, with a spe-cial faux wrought iron design by Brenda, uses a magnet in the dog’s collar to raise the door as she approaches.

Lakeside, the Sproats enjoy resort ame-nities including a large pool, hot tub, wood-burning fireplace, fire pit and out-door kitchen. A boat house provides stor-age for their boat and two jet ski ramps and a 10x30-foot sun deck on top is the perfect place to watch, wine in hand, a gor-geous Florida sunset and the occasional sea plane landing.

ABOVE: The oversized hot tub seats up to 12 people. RIGHT: Fire features, including

a wood-burning fireplace and this fire bowl, add a touch of warmth to the back yard.

“Our role was to catch Jeff and Brenda’s vision and then be sure they get it…and even enhance it,” says Glisson.

“Rob made the process of renovating our home very enjoyable,” adds Brenda. “He walked us through the process and made it easy for us. We actually had fun and now we have fun all the time.”

Wilwant kitchen“It started off with Eric and Jenny Wilwant calling us in to build them an outdoor kitchen which then turned into renova-tions of the master bathroom, children’s bathrooms and the kitchen,” David Patton, Couture Kitchen & Bath’s director of con-struction and sales says of the Wilwant’s kitchen project. “They initially were going to hold off on the kitchen because of their busy lifestyle with triplets. When I told her we could get this done in two and a half weeks, they decided to go ahead.”

In this kitchen, the footprint remained the same but they opened up the soffits, added new custom cabinetry and upgrad-ed the appliances. Additionally, new win-dows and lighting were added to brighten up the space. “We started out with an out-dated kitchen that was falling apart with our hectic lifestyle,” Jenny says.

The centerpiece of this kitchen is the massive center island, designed to accom-modate a trio of kids for homework, meals or snacks. “I loved the way they incorpo-

rated a new island on the same footprint of the old one and I love the character of the cabinets with the storage niches and bulky legs,” Jenny says.

It was important to Jenny to have lots of places to put things away so storage drawers were built into the large island for easy stashing of books and toys, and the pantry was done over as well to provide more space.

New cabinetry with a Brandywine stain and ebony glaze complement the creamy Crèma Royale granite countertops. In the breakfast nook, new built-in wall cabinetry and an elegant new chandelier accent the owners’ own table and chairs.

Cabinet designer Don Miller collaborated with Jenny’s cousin who is a kitchen design-er in Atlanta, on this project. “We love our new kitchen. Everything is just so much more polished now,” Jenny says.

Kerr kitchenLike the Wilwants, Dr. Thomas Kerr and his wife, Holly, began their renovation odyssey with a new outdoor kitchen being built by Couture behind their Cheval home. A broken icemaker in the inside kitchen opened the door for the new project. “My old kitchen was outdated and had a lot of cabi-nets blocking the view of the golf course,” Holly says.

This renovation had two prerequisites: first was that it had to be done in time for the Kerr’s annual Christmas party, just three and a half weeks away. “We had 80 people coming and we just made it,” Holly says. “That morning, we had someone in to paint the baseboards but we made it!”

The second requirement was that it had to incorporate a stone hood over the stove. “The main thing Dr. Kerr said was ‘I don’t care what you do in this house as long as I get my stone hood,’” Patton says with a laugh.

Dr. Kerr’s request was met. The dramatic natural stone hood covers the new gas stovetop which is backed with

an elegant backspash of 6x6-inch tumbled marble tiles with granite inlay. Special niches were built behind the stovetop and elsewhere to hold cooking supplies and decorative elements. Glass fronted cabinets were included in the design to provide attractive places to showcase Holly’s collectables, including her collection of French chef figures.

While both kitchens feature similar cabinetry colors, the island in the Kerr’s kitchen features a different shape and incorporates more perimeter cabinets and golden-toned Mascarella granite countertops that tie into a Tuscan color scheme. Elegant window treatments by Casa Bella Interiors complete the picture and frame their new view outside.

“We spend more time in the kitchen now and it really opens up the area more. The outdoor kitchen flows into the indoor kitchen. It really makes it more of a party house,” Holly says.

White–the color of freshly fallen snow and wedding gowns.

This color is universally known for illustrating innocence. However,

depending on how it is used, it can elicit several different moods. | Pair

crisp whites with royal blues for a preppy New England feel or accent ivory

furniture with brass studs for an edgier feel. If it’s the classic look you

yearn for, keep things simple with delicate lace features. When

using the color white, the world is your oyster.

Dennis and Doris Alvarez had been thinking about downsizing to a smaller home for quite some time.

But in 2010, they were thrown a curve ball that led

them to speed up their plan to make a move. “I had

a heart transplant 15 months ago,” Dennis says. “It

forced us to take stock of our life and our home.”

u They have a wonderful life, with two grown chil-

dren of their own, and two young grandchildren to

keep them busy. But their home at the time wasn’t

conducive to their new lifestyle. “We had a two

story home here in Davis Islands, but going up and

down the steps regularly wasn’t going to work for

Dennis,” Doris says. “Plus we had too much space,

most of which we never used.”

A perfect locationStaying on Davis Islands was a necessity. The quaint com-munity, home to more than 5,000 Floridians, is known for its unique architecture and small town atmosphere. “We love it here,” Dennis says. “We’ve lived here for so long, we couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.”

Apparently many people share this sentiment, since Dennis and Doris were able to sell their home in three days. “Talk about a surprise,” Doris says. “It’s great that we sold our house so fast, but we didn’t have anywhere to go!”

They leased a house in the area and turned to long-time family friend James Ramos, co-owner of Ramos Design Build Corporation, to help them design and build their new home. Ramos and business partner Matt Gataky built the 3,000-square-foot Craftsman-inspired home on an empty lot on Davis Islands. The pale blue exterior, made of durable Hardiplank siding, is accented with white trim, welcoming covered porches and a dark mahogany entry door that per-fectly complements the garage doors. “Everyone knows our house,” Dennis says with a laugh. “And that’s okay. Everyone does yellow, tan or beige, so the blue makes it different.”

The front door leads to an open, relaxed floor plan, with plenty of space for the couple when they’re alone or entertaining family and friends. The main floor houses the kitchen, family room, powder room, office and master suite.

Two additional guest bedrooms and a playroom built specifically for their grand-children are located on the second floor.

Now we’re cookin’Dennis and Doris did away with a formal dining room and living room, instead opt-ing for one large open space. “Whenever we host family and friends they all gather in the kitchen and family room,” Dennis says. “I think we used our old dining room once a year.”

To make up for the lack of a dining room, the kitchen was designed to incor-porate a large table. “Formality wasn’t important to us,” Doris says. “Eating together and spending time together is important. Plus, with young children in the mix, we knew we needed something durable.”

To accommodate large groups, a dis-tressed pine table juts out from the prep

island and is surrounded by a bevy of chairs in an array of colors. “We designed the kitchen around those chairs,” Doris says. “They are beautiful but because of the antique glaze, they look like they’ve been around forever so we don’t have to worry about wear and tear.”

The maple kitchen cabinetry features a light almond glaze accented with darker brown molding and cabinet and island legs. Granite countertops and stone back-splashes in various shades of cream, beige and brown complete the design. A large gas range allows Dennis to cook up any-thing his family desires.

The kitchen overlooks the adjoining family room, where Dennis is quick to point out the custom entertainment cen-ter. “This is almost an exact replica of the one in our old home,” he says. “It was too big for us to take with us, so we asked Old Biscayne Designs to recreate it for us.”

The entertainment center houses a 55-inch flat screen television. Display shelves, with lighting, showcase family photos while the electronic equipment is hidden down below in cabinets. An over-sized cranberry sectional, brought over from the couple’s old house, adds a pop of color to the room.

The antique heart pine floors pull the entire first floor together. The random length and width planks are prefinished and were reclaimed from old distilleries and warehouses. “These floors are incred-ibly unique and provide so much charac-ter,” Gataky says, adding that they had enough wood flooring to finish off the second floor.

Rooms with characterDoris says that while they wanted the open floor plan, both she and Dennis made sure to add unique touches to every room. Since they opted not to include a separate dining room, Doris didn’t have a place to store china and crystal. Ramos suggested adding a dis-play cabinet with a mirror and glass shelves to hold crystal and keepsakes just off the kitchen.

In addition to building a home that adapts to their changing lifestyle, Dennis and Doris Alvarez also took the environment into consideration when they started the design and construction process. The home features several components to improve its energy effi-ciency including Icynene spray foam insulation on all exterior walls, under crawl spaces and in the attic. This insulation creates a sealed envelope, helps improve air quality and controls moisture. The house also includes Low-Emissivity (Low-E) windows to help block out harmful ultra violet rays, a high efficiency 16 SEER air conditioning unit, tankless water heaters and LED recessed can lighting throughout the home.

Their home was recently certified by Energy Star and received a HERS Index rating of 58. The HERS Index is a scoring system created by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) to calculate a home’s energy efficiency. RESNET compared the Alvarez home against the HERS Reference Home, which has a rating of 100. Its 58 rating signifies that the home is 42% more energy efficient than an average new home built in the United States.

Ramos is also gathering the documentation needed to certify the home with the Florida Green Building Coalition. He expects the Alvarez home to achieve Gold status.

focal point in the elegant powder room. The gold, beige, yellow and bronze hues bring out the soft tones of the onyx vanity top. “The countertop is backlit,” Dennis says. “When the light is on the sink almost looks clear. We love how this bathroom turned out.”

As for the master suite, Doris was able to incorporate a few of her favorite colors into the design. The king size bed rests up against a chocolate brown accent wall, which perfectly complements the three light aqua blue walls. “Blue is one of my favorite colors, and these two hues go well together,” she says. “It creates such a calm-ing effect in here.”

The adjoining master bathroom stands out on its own thanks to a glossy marble floor, an oversized shower and a cabinet tower situated in between the double vanities.

Simplifying lifeDennis and Doris say life has changed dra-matically for them since they moved into the home last September. “Life circum-stances forced us to adapt,” says Dennis. “This house has simplified our lives.”

Doris couldn’t agree more. “We wanted to make our home user friendly, not only for us, but for our family. It has everything we need yet it offers such a comforting atmosphere. It’s home.”
