I am a firm believer in creating spaces in our homes that set the mood and inspire us to be our best. Wall color, furnishings, lighting and décor make a statement, not only to the guests we welcome, but to the inner recesses of our own minds as well. If we surround ourself with interesting things, we tend to look interesting, and better yet, feel interesting.
Our most popular projects tend to be homes that tap into this philosophy. They have been lived in and creatively caressed over time. These places tend to stand out because they don’t look like anyone else’s space. They have artwork, collections, or just the right combination of furnishings that make them a visible extension of the residents they shelter.
This issue of Housetrends features an Indian Hill family that never gives a second thought to the weeks they spend getting their home ready for entertaining family and friends during the holidays. It is a gift to all who enter to unwrap and enjoy.
Should you be looking for more holiday inspiration—we’ve got great tips on deco-rating your mantles and placing cheer in strategic locations around the house. It’s always fun to use someone else’s good design as a starting point to launch your own imagination—that’s what Housetrends is all about.
We wish you the very best during this holiday season.

Couple pulls out all the stops when creating Christmas spiritBy Alice P. Drake | Photos by Greg Grupenhof
Decorating a 12,000-square-foot home might be a daunting
task for some, but one couple relishes the challenge to their
creative sides by tackling some jobs together, some apart
and others with the aid of their four children, ages 5 to 20.
Comfort, holiday cheer and collaboration help transform this grand home
into a winter wonderland. “I love Christmas. It is my favorite time of year.
It is all about spending time with family and friends,” says the homeowner,
adding that traditions, such as baking cookies and throwing intimate dinner
parties or grand gatherings, are just par for the course for the couple during
the holidays.

Oh, Christmas treeChristmas trees—14 in total—can be found in almost every room of the house. From artificial to fresh, the trees are individu-ally inspected to make sure that they meet the homeowners’ very high standards. For instance, the tree in the great room is usually a 15-foot Frazier fir that is hand selected every Christmas from their landscape company, Pinecrest Nursery. It is then person-ally delivered by Pinecrest and adorned with 1,500 white lights. One of the homeowners then meticulously decorates each of the trees in the house with a specific theme, such as snowmen in one child’s room and gingerbread men in another.
When the couple originally came together, they discovered they had a mishmash of Christmas ornaments, with many classic pieces that they desired to keep and others that were donated to friends and family. They worked together to marry the old with the new, and had extra shelving constructed in the garage and basement to store their extensive collection.
The gifts under the tree are deceiving in that they are really wooden replicas from Botanica. The local store located in Symmes Township also has created the custom greenery and arrange-ments seen throughout the house. For the front foyer staircase, eight swags were chosen so that they would add a touch of the season without covering the beautiful wrought-iron railings.

Lighting upWhile one homeowner is busy decorating the 14 Christmas trees inside the house, the other homeowner is busy focusing her attention on adding her own personal holiday cheer to the exte-rior of the house. She tightly wraps the branches of the deciduous trees that line the driveway with strands of twinkle lights and painstakingly tests each strand before getting to work. If some of the strands do not light up, she tosses them and buys new, given that her philosophy is that time is money and to sit and try to fig-ure out which light is bad out of the strand is simply not worth it. Plus, she jokes, “I just don’t have the patience to find which bulb is out then replace it.” She does admit to having a large invest-ment in extension cords, and not just any color will do. They have to be in either green or brown, depending on the location of the strand, in order to blend into the natural surroundings.
From top to bottom, with the help of a 12-foot ladder, the homeowner installs all 60,000 lights on her own, including illuminating the barn located on the property, sometimes at her own peril. “Last year when I was placing lights on one of the trees located along the driveway, I was on the top rung of the ladder where it states in bold ‘DO NOT STAND,’ trying to hang the last few—totally ignoring the warning and in the mindset that I was going to make sure that the lights were strung from the top of the tree to the bottom. The next thing I knew, I landed in one of the bushes and laid there thinking, ‘Wow, am I going to be able to get up?’” She confirms that she did not break anything but did have one heck of a bruise. When telling the story several months later, she is able to laugh about it but at the time of the fall, she says, “it was no laughing matter.”

The village peopleThe same homeowner that is fanatic about installing the lights on the exterior of the house started collecting “Christmas in the City” about 10 to 12 years ago. She states, “I started collecting my village after walking into the local Hallmark store. My eye caught the dis-play that had approximately 20 different stores set up. I was fascinated by the intricate detail of the pieces that made up the village and immediately told the sales person that I wanted everything that was part of the display. At the time I thought this is it and there was nothing else to be purchased. Boy was I wrong. I have since been acquiring every new piece that comes out each year.” She can honestly say that she has every building that makes up the collection, with the exception of 12 older buildings that she is in pursuit of acquiring. These pieces are now highly sought after with a steep asking price to boot.

At the time that the homeowners constructed their home, it was placed into the plans that there would be an outlet installed along three of the walls in the basement, every four feet, to handle the multitude of plugs needed to light up the display. They then had two tiered alder wood tables custom made to house the collection. It takes approximately two and a half to three days to put up the entire collection. The homeowner says that this col-lection is “a labor of love” and that she is particular about how it is set up. For instance, she places the miniature Rockefeller Center near the Tavern on the Green, two famous New York City icons, so that the layout makes sense to those familiar with real geography. Nothing is haphazardly displayed, but thought through in detail. The homeowner says she keeps thinking that she is finished collecting, but she cannot ignore the siren song of the annual additions that calls out to her. As a result, a few more buildings continue to be added each year.
Another collection that both homeowners have taken to is the Clothtique Santas. These jolly old Santas are posed doing dif-ferent activities and are displayed around the house on various bookshelves and as a table centerpiece in the breakfast nook. “I never considered myself a collector until I started counting the number of Clothtique Santas that we had,” laughs the one home-owner.

In addition to the shelving in the garage that they had installed, the storage room in the basement and the barn loft also serve as storage for their Christmas decorations. To put the size of their overall collection into perspective, they filled one entire moving truck with their ornaments, Santas and other Christmas holiday decorations; however, this does not take into consideration the decorations that they continue to add onto their collection each year. The first year they moved into the house, they started with 8 trees and have since moved up to 14 trees and intend to continue to add to the collection. The couple add “it is all part of the holiday cheer.”
The proud homeowners say that the first words out of the mouths of individuals that come to the house for the first time, and even those that are close friends and come over frequently are, “This is such a warm and comfortable house.” It is this sentiment that really drives the homeowners to create a whimsical holiday atmosphere for themselves, their children, immediate family, friends and guests.
Editor’s note: This home and its incredible resort-style pool area were featured in Housetrends earlier this year. Please feel free to check out the space sans decoration by searching “A Jewel in the Crown” at housetrends.com.

depending on how it is used, it can elicit several different moods. | Pair
crisp whites with royal blues for a preppy New England feel or accent ivory
furniture with brass studs for an edgier feel. If it’s the classic look you
yearn for, keep things simple with delicate lace features. When
using the color white, the world is your oyster.

a mere absence of color; it is
a shining and affirmative thing,
as fierce as red, as definite

so gaudily, as when He paints
in white.”—Gilbert K. Chesterton, Writer

Media rooms, game rooms, wine cellars and plenty of windows make it hard to notice that the action has moved downstairsBy Karen Bradner
As the southwestern ohio winds begin to blow cold,
cincinnati families take their fun indoors. today, more and more of them
are finding themselves in a space that used to be called the basement, but is
now dubbed “the lower level.” F while the name shift may be subtle, the
changes are anything but. Most of us remember hanging out with friends
in basements—all kinds of basements in all kinds of homes—and chances
are the floors were linoleum, the furniture was mismatched and the lights
were fluorescent. the good television, the nice furniture, and most of the
home’s perks were upstairs where the adults got to hang out and have
fun. F these days, the space down the stairs just may be the best place to
play. savvy homeowners have taken this often expansive, yet underused
space and turned it in to a spare time mecca. check out how four area
homeowners have transformed these territories and see which one you’d
pick when it comes time for curling up and watching a movie.

Indian Hill Wide open spaces, warm colors and a wall of windows facing the pool make this lower level feel like a breath of fresh air. The floor is cork, which cushions the feet and acts as a natural insulator for both warmth and noise and has an added bonus of being “green.” A space dedicated to billiards is tucked off to the side with a wine storage just beyond, and a fully equipped kitchen is the perfect launch pad for party prep.Photos by Robin Victor Goetz/RVGP Inc.

AndersonThese Watch Hill homeowners were thrilled to find a way to carve a cozy niche from a section of their basement in this historic home. The construction crew managed to match original knotty pine wainscoting from the stairwell and extend that treatment into the new family room with custom panels and cabinetry. The family carved out a space for games, a small bar, and a seating area that wel-comes guests to watch a crackling fire or a favorite movie. The “new” space does little to belie the fact that this room is not as old as the nearly 100-year-old leaded glass windows that adorn the walls.Photos by Robin Victor Goetz/RVGP Inc.

Transform a simple bedroom into your private sanctuary
By Christina Kleiner
You spend almost one third of your life in your bed-
room, so it is only natural that you would want a calm,
tranquil escape from the stressful, non-stop mentality of
everyday life. In addition to creating a peaceful setting,
your bedroom should reflect your personality. If you’re
thinking about revamping your hideaway, or if you are
decorating a family member’s bedroom, take a few
minutes to browse through the ideas on the following
pages before you head out to your local boutique.

Early training and socialization is critical for your dog’s development and will help dictate how he behaves in the future. The Right Start Puppy Training course at WagsAcademy is the quick, easy and delightfully fun way to teach your new companion the ropes - How to interact with people and other dogs, how to listen during the challenging teenage years and of course the basic commands that make any dog a joy to be around.• We also offer intermediate obedience and one-on-one training • The area’s best Professional Training Instructors

Beautiful, Functional, Yours!
Here at Legacy Kitchens, we know a thing or two about design. We know that designing your new kitchen is not about us. It’s about you.
So before we do a lot of talking, we do plenty of listening. We’ll learn about you. How you use your kitchen... and what you hate about it. What you need in your new kitchen... and how to make it work for you.
Then we’ll go to work doing what we love: creating a kitchen that’s not only beautiful, but functional. A kitchen designed to meet your specific needs and exceed your expectations.
You know what you want in your new kitchen... let us help bring those ideas to life.

for holiday entertaining. From crudités to
canapés, to hors d’oeuvres to appetizers,
these lovely little food bites can be creatively
concocted in so many ways that are
endlessly satisfying. Hot or cold, hearty
or light, sweet or savory—with so many
options you can declare with confidence
“yeah, there’s an app for that!” Here we
offer a few of our favorites to get your
holidays off to a delicious beginning.

Seafood Cucumber Stacks with Lemon Cream and Chives½ cup light sour cream
1 bunch chives, finely chopped, divided
Zest and 1 tablespoon juice
from 1 lemon
Salt and ground black pepper to taste
1 (4-ounce) package Whole Catch™
Smoked Salmon OR 4 ounces smoked
trout OR 8 ounces crab meat OR 12
medium peeled, deveined and halved
cooked shrimp
1 seedless cucumber, cut into 24 slices
These refreshing hors d’oeuvres are equally delicious made with salmon, trout, shrimp or crab, so pick a seafood that’s best for your budget. For vegetarians, a slice of baked tofu is a perfect substitute for the seafood.
In a small bowl, combine sour cream, half of the chives, lemon zest and juice, salt and pepper. If using salmon or trout, cut into 24 bite-sized pieces. Arrange a piece of seafood on each cucumber slice then top with a dollop of sour cream mix-ture and garnish with remaining chives. Makes 2 dozen.

Tip: If you’re hosting a holiday party, get everyone social-
izing easily by having a few of your guests circulate with trays of appetizers. This will inspire
instant conversation even among those who don’t
know each other.

✽ Decorate your delicacies…Use simple garnishing techniques to compliment your appetizers and bring your presentation to a whole new level. Depending on the appetizer, garnishes can range from a bed of greens to curls of cheese or chocolate, to tiny fruits or sprinkled sugar or coconut powder. Garnish a dish according to its flavor and/or color (i.e. sweet or fruity garnish with a sweet dish). For other great garnishing tips go to: http://recipes.howstuffworks.com/tools-and-techniques/how-to-garnish-cooking.htm

Do
you know your crudités from your
canapés? A crudité is a traditional
French appetizer comprised of raw
vegetables. While canapé was once
a French reference for the couch,
some people thought a piece of
toast topped with a savory food
looked like a couch, and so
“canapé” took on an additional
meaning.

Individual Veggie Pizzas with Two Squashes2 teaspoons olive oil
1 each zucchini and yellow squash, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
4 whole grain English muffins, halved and lightly toasted
1 cup prepared pasta or pizza sauce
1 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
Combine zucchini and yellow squash because the yellow squash is slightly sweeter and balances out zucchini’s “grassy” flavor. Also, select your favorite pasta or pizza sauce for these pizzas (for added nutrients, select one with additional vegetables).
Preheat the oven to 400ºF. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add both squashes and garlic and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until tender. Top the English muffin halves with the sauce, cheese, and squash mixture and transfer to a baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly. Serves 4.
