The Mountain in spring

Tamborine Mountain is a good place tobe in spring, there is so much

happening. We had the TamborineMountain Show two weeks ago, we’ve justenjoyed the Garden Club’s Springtime onthe Mountain, and we have the ScarecrowFestival to look forward to.

The Show (top) was held over one daythis year. There were some misgivings as tohow successful this would be, but in fact itwas generally agreed that the change was agreat success. The new layout for exhibitswas also well received, with the flowers ondisplay so easily accessed. Of course, theMountain Showgrounds are an ideal venuefor horse events, and this year was noexception. The entertainment for childrenwas as popular as ever – as our pictureshows.

The Springtime on the Mountain OpenGardens Trail (below) was as popular asever this year, with Garden Club membersand helpers kept busy at all the opengardens. With the changeable weather wehave been having lately the days werewarm and fine, something not to be countedon – but gratefully acknowledged. Thevisitors were impressed by the beauty of thegardens, and the work that had gone intomaking them such a delight.

Now we can look forward to theScarecrow Festival – keep your eyes open,we’ll soon be seeing scarecrows around theMountain in all their favourite places.

MonthThe Tamborine Mountain Local Producers

Association (TM LPA) has been very busyrenovating the Green Shed this past month. Wenow have new display facilities for ourproduce, and the new display was launched intime for the Show Day horticulturalcompetition last week. It has to be said thatthere was some mighty impressive localproduce entered into the competition includingone metre long Rhubarb. Well done to thosewho contributed to an impressive display oflocal horticultural products for our visitors.

The months of September and October arereally great months for local producers, withtemperate weather and ample water suppliesfrom good winter rain. In season are absolutelybeautiful peas (including snaps and snows),silverbeet, lettuce, rhubarb, potatoes, spring

onions, and avocadoes.Also seeing out the winter season – supplies

of cabbage, pumpkin and broccoli are holdingup well. Well done to those local producerswho are growing out of season. Rememberlocal and fresh is best from a local economicperspective as well as for the environment andtransport costs.

Very soon we will also have locally suppliedsummer season zucchinis, cucumber, andcarrots.

The Annual General Meeting of the TM LPAhas been set for 12.15pm Show GroundsSunday 20 November 2011. Nominations fornext years Management Committee areencouraged from the wider LPA membership,and nomination forms will be available fromthe Green Shed on Sundays, and/or thePresident - Bruce Bartle.

Dear Editor,In response to ‘Susan’ (Tamborine Times,

22/9/11) who hasn’t spoken to anyone whowants the dump moved: with respect, that isnot the point. The Council dump is virtually inthe middle of national park, and on land that isdesignated ‘conservation’. For a communitywho depend economically to a large extent oneco-tourism and who pride themselves on their

environmental good behaviour, that is a glaringcontradiction and a disgrace. The dump is,simply, in the wrong place.

In all the words spoken and written over thepast months, the national park itself has had novoice and, it seems, few advocates.

for the rest of the world to do likewise in orderto prevent all our skills and industry frombeing exported, it has the capacity to turn thiscountry into as big a basket case as any in theworld today.

And, needless to say, without making ascrap of difference to world climate.

Dear Editor,Government is about care of people and

when any democratic form of care is notadhered to a total breakdown of trust occurs,as is the case with Scenic Rim RegionalCouncil versus Tamborine Mountain ProgressAssociation.

This 96-year-old Association is a publicgroup, part of whose charter is to discloseexpenditure and yet in the Council’s wisdomthey are expected to become secretive andbreak their trust with their members.

How wrong can it get?

For a Council to fight its own ratepayers,that pay the costs of all wages (Councillors’included) sends a message to all concerned,that this is a bad Council and instead ofgetting Government support, this should bewithdrawn.

This Scenic Rim Regional Council is aregistered Corporation and as such ratepayersmust be the legal shareholders, and thereforea percentage vote of confidence will be calledfor in an Election in March 2012. We will seethe final result then, when all the ghosts ofbad things (past) shall come to haunt them.

WE really have to be concerned about theway that the Local Government

Association of Queensland (LGAQ) tries toimpose its priorities on Council andcommunity affairs. Equally concerning is theway our Council cooperates.

As I have previously noted, the LGAQ wasformed to give Local Government andRegional Councils a united voice. It is fundedby millions per year, about one third fromCouncils and the rest from Government grantsand its own business interests. However, it isobviously inappropriate for its policies tothreaten transparency in local Council affairs.In particular, it is unacceptable to suppress theviewpoints of Councillors who have differentopinions about how their statutoryresponsibilities to protect the interests ofresidents should best be exercised.

It is not as if this desire to silencedisagreement is new. Remember Cr Brent’snotorious "Not On My Watch" declaration inthe media early in this term of Council. Heannounced he intended prohibitingCouncillors expressing any explanation of adissenting view once a Council resolution hadbeen adopted. Fortunately, this aim was latershown to be untenable.

Then, in the last few months, there was theenthusiastic adoption by our Council of theCouncillor Code of Conduct drafted by theLGAQ. This was unnecessary because theprovisions in the Local Government Act areadequate. The Code places additionalrestraints on Councillors’ freedom ofexpression and was rejected outright by theGold Coast and Ipswich City Councils, amongothers.

The pot has really started to boil in the lastfew weeks with some very weird andworrying carryings-on. They includedannouncements that the Council CEO hadtaken stress leave (wrong) and that the LGAQwas formally asking the State Government tointervene since rising tensions between ourCouncillors were becoming intolerable. Iasked ten very serious questions in theBeaudesert Times and the TamborineMountain News about who had briefed theLGAQ and the press. Also, how had theLGAQ become involved without, as isclaimed by the Mayor, any request from ourCouncil. Not surprisingly in our cynical times,there has been no response.

But the pot really boiled over with CrRichard Adams’ Councillor Comments in theTamborine Times of 22 September. He seemsto happily accept the LGAQ propositions eventhough the LGAQ is wrongly imposing itsown priorities on Council and communityaffairs. I wrote a response to the TamborineTimes which didn’t appear. I realise they can’tprint everything so repeat my concerns below.

I agree with Cr Adams that, under the LocalGovernment Act, the Council’s role includesbeing a Board of Directors. However, he thengoes on to quote the LGAQ in identifying "acouncillor’s role as one to ensure that thepolicies, strategies and objectives of the local

government are formulated to best serve thepublic interest of the area generally." It is acritical omission that this wrongly makes nomention of overseeing the performance of theadministrative arm of Council. The Act makesit clear that Councillors’ responsibilities gomuch further than the simple formulation ofpolicies, strategies and objectives. Overallresponsibilities listed in the Act include:

– Representing the current and futureinterests of the residents of the localgovernment area

– Ensuring the local government:Discharges its responsibilities under the Actand: Achieves its corporate and communityplans and: Complies with all laws that applyto local government.

– Participating in council meetings, policydevelopment, and decision making, for thebenefit of the local government area

– Being accountable to the community forthe local government performance.

It defies belief that any attempt should bemade to distill this wide range ofresponsibilities down to simply formulatingpolicies, strategies and objectives. To beaccountable to the community obviously alsoinvolves determining if the performance of theadministrative arm of Council satisfies theAct. Black mark LGAQ!

However, there is more. Cr Adams withmentor LGAQ, goes on to convey the concept"that councillors act together for the purposesof making collegiate decisions and thatcouncillors do not have any individualdecision making or operational power". Suchan attitude is clearly incompatible with theindividual responsibility of Councillors asdefined above in the Local Government Act.If a Councillor believes something is wronghe or she has a specific responsibility torepresent the interests of residents by speakingup and being heard. In both this case and inthe Code of Conduct drafted by the LGAQ,the LGAQ is wrongly promoting the principlethat Councillors who disagree with themajority should be kept silent. Another evenbigger black mark for the LGAQ and thoseCouncils which support such unjustifiableobjectives!

Remember, too, the suspect smellsurrounding the LGAQ’s devoting more thana third of its sessions at its forthcomingAnnual Conference to giving expertinstruction to sitting Councillors as to how tobe re-elected – with our rates contributing!

It appears clear that Cr Adams is simplyfollowing the party line of the majority of ourCouncillors. I wonder why our Councillors areso happy to leave such fundamentals in thehands of the LGAQ?

Now a little about Council’s claim againstthe Progress Association for legal expensesrelated to the Hyacinth development. Councilhas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars ofratepayers funds in legal costs after refusingprior discussion of submissions identifying aseriously flawed succession of approvals. TheProgress Association was much more

economical but still incurred significant costs.The Court found for the Association on all thedisputed points except one which theAssociation appealed. Each party wasresponsible for its own costs other than in theappeal, with Council as the winner thenclaiming its costs.

It is reported that the Association hasoffered to make payments over a period andCouncil accepted, providing a confidentialityclause applied. I can understand that such aclause would cause problems for theAssociation which has a paying membership,elected officers and considerable dependenceon community assistance and contributions.

What an unnecessary mess!

I am required by Scenic Rim RegionalCouncil policy to make the followingstatements:

• These are my personal views.• When a Council votes on a decision, they

count up the votes and the decision is madebased on the side that gets the most votes.

COUNCIL PARKLAND AT KERRYCouncil’s recent decision to relinquish 11.4

hectares of land previously allocated forfuture sport and recreation on Kerry Road, adecision which I strenuously opposed, is aboutto come under further scrutiny. This land isabsolute prime flat land that fronts the AlbertRiver and the local farmers tell me it is worth$3,000 an acre, or $900,000 on present marketrates. The Mayor declared a conflict ofinterest because the person trying to purchaseit from the Crown, and who is the currentlessee, contributed to his last electioncampaign. The other councillors all supportedthe resolution to say it was no longer needed.Well, it could have just slipped underneath theradar and no one would have been the wiser,as there was no consultation on the issue.

Having access to good public land isessential for a Council as it gives options forproviding essential community facilities asthey are needed. A decade ago this land wasconsidered when Federal funding was floatingaround for a regional equestrian centre. I justcould not believe what I was witnessing whenthey decided to relinquish it to the Crown. Isgiving away such land and not even gettingpaid for it good financial management? Justimagine if Council needed to purchase thisland in the future, how much more costlywould that be?

The local farmers took up a petition of 20signatures in just one day after the BeaudesertTimes ran a story based on my press release onthe issue. See www.derekformayor.com/node/80

I presented that petition at the last meetingand as a result it has been resolved the issuewill be considered again at this month’sCommunity Services Committee meeting. CONFLICT OF INTEREST PROVISIONSCHANGED

Remember in March this year I was votedout of several items at meetings by the Councilunder the now infamous Local GovernmentAct “Conflict of Interest" or "DOB IN"provisions, in relation to decisions about theProgress Association. Under the LocalGovernment Act other Councillors couldaccuse and point the finger and excludesomeone as they collectively agreed there mayhave been a perception of a conflict of interest.The famous photo taken of me with ProgressAssociation members at the Brisbane LawCourts was enough to convince our Council Icouldn’t participate in decision-making on anyProgress Association issues. After Icomplained of this absurdity and injustice, theDepartment of Local Government sent down

two senior managers to interview me, HenryBraun, Jeanette Lockey, Roland Lindenmayer,Councillor Wehl, and several other councillorsand officers to try and make a link to justifythe unjustifiable decisions. As explained byRoland Lindenmayer to the Minister, theevidence taken from those interviewed was initself riddled with errors and untruths, yetevidence given was never allowed to be seenor challenged.

Well, without much fanfare, theGovernment has just amended the Act. Itseems as though they were clutching atstraws, trying to defend this piece of poorlegislation. It has come full circle and it’smostly now back to the individual Councillorsto determine if they have a conflict of interest.Strict penalties apply for breach of thisrequirement.

HIGH DENSITY HOUSING ANDDUPLEXES

The main reason people like living in theScenic Rim is the rural character of the townsand villages. That was the finding of the just-released Community Plan. This could be underthreat, unless the next Council addresses theissue of secondary housing and starts to put inplace planning decisions to protect the amenityof our towns. Growth is beneficial, but not atthe expense of existing liveability. I think it’sall too late for this Council to do anythingnow, with just 4 months of business left. HasCouncil dropped the ball and have its planningdecisions been good for the region as a whole?Whilst it has been full steam ahead talking upthe benefits of the Beaudesert Town growingto 30,000 people in 20 years, the residents arestarting to see the downside, and the processhas only just begun.

A petition was recently received from 120Beaudesert residents objecting to the 26duplexes built in their suburbs in just the last12 months, with the juggernaut still in fullswing. All are self-assessable with no controlsfrom Council. The petitioners say that Councilis justifying its planning scheme, whichallows this, by saying this is “Developmentconsistent with the pattern of developmentestablished within the community”. You haveto ask would you want duplexes instead ofhouses built on all the remaining vacant lots?It can and does change the character of estatesfor the worse with more cars, congestion,rentals, and transient owners, and devaluesneighborhoods if not carefully managed.

I took some photos of what’s happening inBrayford Estate in Beaudesert and I wonder ifthis is also what Council wants all round theShire? Council has to meet Regional Planguidelines for housing density, however Ithink it can be done without this result. Wecertainly know that Council encouraged thisform of development and wanted us to have iton Tamborine Mountain with Hyacinth. (45lots of 500m2 blocks). Take a look for >>

Council spin challenged

Arecent article in the 28th September 2011issue of the Beaudesert Times under the

headline “Dispute over legal fees ongoing”has elicited a response from a member of theTamborine Mountain Progress Associationmanagement committee. The committeemember claims that statements in the articleattributed to the Scenic Rim Council are sowide of the mark it would be funny were itnot so blatantly and unfairly derogatorytowards the Tamborine Mountain ProgressAssociation. The committee member, RolandLindenmayer, further states:

“TMPA is not stubborn nor has it beenunreasonable as claimed. TMPA’s proposalto pay a portion of the Court fees awardedagainst it, over a five-year period wasaccepted by Council. It is merely thecondition of confidentiality that TMPA findsdifficult to comply with. How can aregistered community organization whosemeetings, for 96 years, have always beenopen to the general public agree toconfidentiality when a breach of this clausewould have the organization in some form ofcontempt? TMPA has no assets and wouldhave to raise funds from the community soagain how can this be kept confidential asCouncil insists?

“Council’s unidentified spokesperson, ifquoted accurately, has attempted to “spin” thefacts into pro-Council propaganda. In theinterests of justice and truth some of the truefacts of the matter, which was decided in aCourt of Law, deserve to be publicly aired.

“After a long drawn-out process toascertain the details of the development onTamborine Mountain known as “Hyacinth”TMPA advised Council in 2008 that the

development approvals were not valid underexisting regulations. Council took no noticeand was not interested in discussing thematter. Because of the Council’s intractablestance TMPA eventually resorted to Courtaction. The Court eventually awardedjudgement in three out of the four matterscontested to TMPA, the presiding Judge evengoing so far as to state that Council’s actionswere “incomprehensible and inexplicable”.Council had initially stated that it would notdefend TMPA’s claims but in what can onlybe regarded as a face-saving exercise decidedat the last minute to be represented by Seniorand Junior Counsel. That decision needlesslycost ratepayers some $280,000!

“TMPA, on legal advice, took the fourthitem to the Court of Appeal. The matter wasone of technical law and Council did not evenneed to be represented. Nevertheless it againengaged Senior and Junior Counsel. TheCourt decided against TMPA and Councilwas awarded costs of almost $36,000. Again,money that Council need not have spent andnow it claims to be acting in the interests ofratepayers in pursuing those costs. Wherewas that concern when it rejected TMPA’soriginal approach and decided to waste the$280,000?

“For almost a century TMPA has tried tohelp the residents of Tamborine Mountainand nearby areas to realise their dreams of anappropriately developed and environmentallyenhanced place in which to live. Over theyears the records show that generallyCouncils have been reasonable in theirdemands and in their cooperation.Unfortunately the Scenic Rim Council has todate not displayed this degree ofreasonableness.”

You can barely walk between these twohouses. I guess if the Council is focused onchanging Beaudesert, Canungra and TamborineMountain with Boonah, Kalbar and Kooralbyn(500 Houses?) then can we get ready for moreof this in the future? LNP selects Krause

LOCAL LNP members met last Saturday tochoose a candidate to contest the next

State election for the seat of Beaudesert. Thesuccessful candidate was Jonathan Krause.

Jonathan, 29 years old, works for the NationalAustralia Bank. He and his wife’s family havehad a long connection with the Beaudesertelectorate in the Boonah area for over 100years.

ON spring eveningsyou may notice

small bright lightsflashing and flyingerratically through theair, these are fireflies.What makes this littleinsect so spectacular isbioluminescence – theability to glow.Tamborine Mountain ishome to two famousnocturnal, bioluminescent creatures – firefliesand glow-worms.

The common name of firefly is misleading.Fireflies are actually carnivorous beetles of thefamily Lampyridae. Although there are some1700 species worldwide, only 16 have beendescribed from Australia.

This species usually favours damp areas withundergrowth and leaf litter. Eggs, larvae andadults all have luminous qualities, but the adults,particularly the males, emit the strongest light.Larvae use light to deter predators and adults uselight to find a mate.

The firefly creates its bioluminescencethrough a chemical reaction between luciferin (awaste product), luciferase (an enzyme), and areactant, in fireflies this is adenosinetriphosphate (ATP) and oxygen. This chemicalreaction produces energy in the form of light.The fireflies are able to regulate the emission oflight by controlling the amount of air supplied totheir cells through opening an aperture in theirbody. It is thought that the insects use this lightpulsing to communicate. The ability to regulatelight emission is dramatically demonstrated bysome tropical firefly species, which gathertogether in large numbers in trees and bushes,and synchronise their flashes in a spectacularlight show

The life cycle of the firefly is egg, larvae, andadult. The larvae are terrestrial and live in leaf

litter, where they preyupon snails, slugs andearthworms. They caninject toxic digestiveenzymes into their prey,which liquefies theflesh, allowing it to beeasily consumed. Thelarvae’s lifespan is notyet known, for our localspecies it may beapproximately one year.

In spring the adult male beetles take flight andflash their light signals as a mating display to thefemales, who remain on the ground. The femalesflash back a weaker signal to attract the flyingmales. Their activity decreases in brightmoonlight since the light seems to interfere withtheir ability to produce and see light signals. Theadults only live for a few days; research suggeststhey survive for about four nights. They do nothave mouthparts and so cannot feed. Their shortlives mean that it is urgent that they find a matequickly. Males have large eyes and a visor likestructure so they can focus on locating lightsignals from receptive females.

Unfortunately global firefly populations aredwindling, in some places dramatically. In sucha light dependent creature it is not surprising thatlight pollution is one factor implicated in thisdecline. On Tamborine Mountain the amount oflight pollution from street lights, houses,commercial lighting and bright exterior lightshas increased, so turning off a few garden lightsin spring may help to keep these enchanting littleinsects flying.Next Bushwalk: Saturday 8 October –Larapinta falls

ALL RECENT BURGLARY OFFENCESWILL BE SOLVED!

Numerous burglary offences werecommitted in the Tamborine Mountain areaover the past few months and while seethingat the prospect of not being able to identifythe offenders I can at least say that alloffences have been linked to suspectsidentified through CCTV, DNA andfingerprint evidence.

There were in fact three separate groups ofoffenders believe it or not! A car load of kidshit the suburbs around Paradise Drive andcommitted offences all over SEQ. A maleand female crew that are still on the run areresponsible for the Forest Park burglaries andCedar Creek Falls got a touch up by the samegang of four (three male and one female) thatbroke into the Shell and the IGA over thepast nine months.

I wish I could say that once they arecaught they will be locked up and the keythrown away but who am I kidding! Be niceif their parents stepped up to the plate butagain I’m dreaming.

I can say though that not a single one ofthe suspects is a local or linked to any localin any way! They are all recidivist criminalsfrom the Logan, Brisbane and Coast areas.We are a soft target and easy pickings soplease take a look at your home and vehiclesecurity.

A growing trend is that offenders arestealing vehicle car keys from easilyaccessible areas inside unlocked dwellings,resulting not only in the theft of propertyfrom the dwelling, but also the theft of theresident’s vehicle.

We urge all home owners to conduct ahome security audit and place keys andvaluables in a less visible and less accessiblearea. It is also imperative to implement thesestrategies by protecting your vehicle.

Vehicles are often broken into at night timewhile they are parked in driveways or on thestreet outside homes. Thieves are targetingthese vehicles because owners are leavingvaluable items such as wallets, GPSnavigational devices, iPods, cash, spare keysand garage remotes in their vehicle. Quiteoften the items of value left inside vehiclesare easily visible to anyone standing next tothe vehicle; some are also being leftunlocked. Do not make your vehicle andeasy target; if possible remove all valuablesfrom within.

If you observe any suspicious activity(unknown persons gaining entry to property,unknown vehicles in estates or hear entrybeing gained to dwellings by glass smashing)you are encouraged to call policeimmediately.

To assist police in identification of

property recovered, please record all serialnumbers or engrave your property with yourQueensland driver’s licence number.

A COUNCIL FOR THE PEOPLEA CHANGE FOR THE BETTER

This week’s article was to be about Rates and Finances. However, theissue of COMMUNICATION has been a hot topic recently so I will providemy views on this issue.

Firstly though, may I say how much I am enjoying meeting with theresidents of Tamborine Mountain during my door-knock, and listening toyour views. I have just completed North Tamborine and am now movinginto northern Eagle Heights. I will leave a flyer in your mailbox advising thatI will be coming to visit, and follow this up with a door-knock the followingweek over the period of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If you are not in I willleave a flyer in your door, outlining my principles. Please feel free to contactme if you wish to discuss any issue.

Communication and consultation are an essential element of LocalGovernment. Without it, the views and concerns of you, the ratepayer, willnot be heard and feedback cannot be provided. The recent debacleconcerning the parking arrangements outside the Medical Centre complexshould not have happened. The communication process failed. The issuesconcerning the Refuse Pit/Green Waste site have not been communicated inthe best manner. As your Councillor, I would seek a review of how Councilcommunicates with its ratepayers.

As an election promise, I would hold a Community Forum within onemonth of being elected and on a regular basis thereafter. These forums willbe an opportunity for the community to share their views and for me toprovide feedback. In addition, the monthly consultation sessions in theLibrary will continue.

QPWS NEWSFIRE SEASON

Fire season has begun andQueensland Parks and WildlifeService (QPWS) rangers havebeen busy with fire managementduties. Planned burns and wildfireresponses are currently underwayin and around South EastQueensland parks and forestsfollowing a wet summer andrelatively dry winter, these firemanagement activities have beenfocussed on the Corbould sectionof Mt Tamborine this year and asuccessful planned burn wasconducted with the assistance ofthe Rural Fire Brigade. QPWS rangers wishto thank the park’s neighbours for theircooperation during this exercise.

Planned burns usually take place sometimebetween early July and the end of Augustsubject to appropriate weather conditions.Planned burning is an important managementtool used by QPWS to reduce the likelihoodand impact of bushfires and for ecologicalpurposes. The aim of a low intensity plannedburn is to reduce the volume of forest fuel inthe area. This helps reduce the intensity ofany subsequent wildfires and also providesfavourable conditions for natural forestregeneration. Not only is fire a natural part ofthe Australian landscape; it’s also a necessarypart.

A Fire Danger Period has been declared bythe Queensland Fire and Rescue Service for2011, effective midnight 4 September tomidnight 1 January 2012. As a result newrules have been implemented on the lightingof fires – for more information visitwww.fire.qld.gov.au

A NEW SHED FOR THE TAMBORINEBUSH VOLUNTEERS

QPWS rangers have built a new tool shed forthe Tamborine Bush Volunteers. The shedhouses equipment used by the volunteers toassist QPWS in the ongoing battle againstenvironmental weeds in Tamborine NationalPark. Local ranger Dominique Michel recentlyofficially handed over the shed keys to volunteercoordinators, Len and Lorrelle Lowry.

The tireless efforts of the Tamborine BushVolunteers have made noticeable differenceson several re-vegetation plots acrossTamborine Mountain including areas such asthe Joalah and MacDonald sections and theGeissmann Road section. The removal of allexotic plants including lantana and privet isfollowed up by planting endemic nativespecies into the newly weeded areas.Volunteers meet at about 8.30am on the firstSaturday of every month at the Beacon Roadshed, behind the tennis courts. QPWS MASTER PLANCONSULTATION DRAFT OF 'NATURALLY QUEENSLAND2020—THE MASTER PLAN FOR PROTECTED AREAS,FORESTS AND WILDLIFE'.

PROTECTED areas and forests are the cornerstone ofbiodiversity conservation in Queensland. However, theyare not only important for conservation. They also providea place for people to visit and reconnect with nature—aplace for fun, family time and the healthy outdoorlifestyle that is a special feature of life in Australia.

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) ischarged with protecting these important natural assets, aswell as the irreplaceable wildlife that lives alongside usand shares the environment we all depend on.

For the past 10 years the 2001 Master Plan forQueensland’s parks system has provided the blueprint forprotected area management in Queensland. It helps guidethe way QPWS manages national parks to protect naturaland cultural values.

From July until December 2011 the Master Plan isbeing updated to reflect the challenges and opportunitiesthat QPWS will face over the next 10 years. It will addressall aspects of QPWS business, including protected areas onland and sea, as well as forests and wildlife.

A consultation draft, called 'Naturally Queensland2020, the Master Plan for protected areas, forests andwildlife' has been developed and can be downloaded athttp://www.derm.qld.gov.au/

The community is encouraged to comment to help setthe scene for the future of protected areas, forests andwildlife in Queensland.

The play will run at the recently restoredZamia Theatre in Main Street, NorthTamborine on Fridays and Saturdays 4, 5, 11,12, 18, 19 November at 8pm with a matineeon Sunday 13 at 2.30pm. WHAT a difficult year 2011 hasbeen! So much loss and

damage from flood and fire to somany homes and work places.Even at home, Elizabeth had to

undergo vascular surgery to both legs to clearblockages in the major arteries inhibiting theblood flow, but now, three stents later, all iswell again!

How efficient is wonderful surgery! InFriday noon and back home Saturdayafternoon. We cannot praise the staff, nursesand orderlies at Allamanda Private Hospitalenough. Everyone was kind, friendly andcaring. So I’m the chieg veggie peeler andchopper, wash and wipe up – “A man’s workends with the setting sun but a woman’s workis never done!

It’s also been a difficult year for the

orchestra – lots of ill health. Not once in thelast year have we had the same players at twoconsecutive rehearsals.

Just three weeks before our next concertour double bass player has been bitten on theleft hand by his dog. But local StephanieLorimer, who is head of music studies at StStephen’s College has come to our rescue,and as a bonus Stephanie’s son Aaron, a finecellist, said he would come too!

So it’s full; steam ahead for our nextconcert – Sunday October 9 at St George’sAnglican Church. The concert starts at2.30pm and admission is $7, school agechildren free.

Come along and hear the orchestra, with afull complement of players, thanks to theTamborine Mountain community spirit.
