Fine Gael Senator for Dublin South-West, Cait Keane, has today (Monday) welcomed the announcement that Tallaght has been shortlisted as one of 100 towns and cities nationwide for a National Town and City Revival Initiative that was launched by Retail Excellence Ireland in 2012. In July of last year, a National Town and City Revival Committee was established to endeavour to improve the fortunes of Ireland’s towns and cities. This followed a Retail Excellence Ireland (REI) review of town and city performance which indicated that there was room for improvement in many towns and cities in terms of their citizen engagement.

“I am pleased at the announcement that The Town & City Revival Committee incorporating Retail Excellence Ireland (REI), Chambers Ireland, An Garda Síochána, the Dublin BID, the County & City Managers Association and Failte Ireland are seeking applications from shortlisted towns and cities to become one of two pilot towns and cities in Ireland. Tallaght has been shortlisted as one such town and I think this represents a great opportunity for the local stakeholders in Tallaght to come together and work in collaboration with the REI to help the area to realise its full potential. The competition is now open and I am confident that Tallaght has every chance of succeeding in becoming of the two chosen towns and cities.

“The REI has expressed its commitment to assisting towns and cities as part of a collaborative approach that can be established between local businesses, the local authority, chamber of commerce, business association and the many other stakeholders who have an interest in the wellbeing of the town or city. There are many such groups of stakeholders or Town Teams I at work in

Keane welcomes announcement that Tallaght is shortlisted for Town and City Revival Initiative

Ireland today. To assist these Town Teams the REI has created a Framework which offers guidance and advice as to what might work in a particular town or city.

“The Framework was created following consultation with Town and City Managers, Local Authorities, Central Government including the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan, international experts and stakeholders in towns and cities around Ireland. I am now urging the stakeholders in Tallaght to come together and begin the application process to become one of the two pilot towns and cities. The benefits of selection as a pilot town or city are support from committee organisations to establish a town team,” assistance with the development of a town plan, I and specific support from County and City Managers and the Dublin BID regarding interventions which have worked to re-engage citizens with their civic space.

“The application process is now open and the closing date for receipt of completed applications is 24th May 2013. Completed applications must be returned to Retail Excellence Ireland, 38|39 Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin 2 and the announcement regarding the two successful towns and cities will be made on 7th June 2013. I am strongly urging the stakeholders in Tallaght to come forward and apply for this initiative as it represents a wonderful opportunity to make the area a better place for future generations to enjoy and share.”

The SMILE Resource Exchange event at TALLAGHT Stadium, welcomed over 50 businesses to exchange surplus products, by products and reusable items, in order to save money, help the environment by diverting waste from landfill and to identify new business opportunities out of turning a waste into a resource. 177 potential exchanges were identified between the businesses in attendance.

Mayor Cathal King said “In the current climate, businesses welcome

new and innovative ways to save and make money - SMILE Exchange Resource can help businesses tick both those boxes. The use and reuse of resources is an important part of waste prevention. Even better with the SMILE Resource Exchange programme all resources offered are either free of charge or below market value, and are valuable resources in their own right.”

An added advantage of this SMILE event was the opportunity for participants to attend Eco-Design, Waste Prevention and Energy Management workshops. These workshops provided a series of case studies presented on best practice eco design and examples of ways to reduce waste during the design of a product. Energy bills were also reviewed on a one to one basis in the afternoon of the event.

Loman O’Byrne stated” The SMILES event was a great success. It shows what can be achieved when local businesses and agencies work together. Of course, reducing cost while helping the environment is a powerful idea but it is still quite something to actually see it come to fruition. I am delighted that the South Dublin County Enterprise Board got involved in this and it is a very good indicator of how the new Local Enterprise Office will work when the Enterprise Board and the County Council are fully integrated later this year. Hopefully, this can become a regular event in the Dublin region”

Andrea Carroll, Sustainable Business Executive, South Dublin Chamber, said South Dublin Chamber are delighted to have played a part in making sustainable business a reality in South Dublin, through the SMILE event. Initiatives such as this one are innovative and exciting and demonstrate a new era in Irish business. There is no waste, just an

untapped resource. Thanks so much to all of the businesses that attended the event and helped to make it such a success.

Speaking at the event, Michelle Green, Project Manager, SMILE said, “We are delighted to have identified 165 potential exchanges between 50 businesses at our Dublin SMILE event at Tallaght Stadium today, which was a tremendous success. Since its inception, SMILE Resource Exchange has identified over 2,000 potential matches between businesses as well as identifying thousands of euros of cost savings for businesses; and while it will take our team some time to quantify and calculate potential cost savings to businesses from our Dublin event, we’re really looking forward to achieving similar encouraging statistics.”

IKEA, Pfizer, Early Childhood Ireland, Irish Ferries and Repak Recycling were amongst the many businesses in attendance on the day to see if there were opportunities for other businesses to reuse some of their unwanted items such as steel drums, sofas and chairs, children’s play bandstand, IT equipment, wood pallets etc.

Keiron Philips, Project Manager of the Green Business Initiative at the Environmental Protection Agencysaid, “The EPA are delighted to support SMILE in this exciting project. It’s great to see that businesses are getting together to exchange resources, which hopefully will generate savings for them, and benefit the environment”

SMILE stands for Saving Money through Industry Links & Exchanges. Potential exchanges are identified through SMILE networking events, an online exchange facility (www.smileexchange.ie) and the SMILE support team. SMILE Resource Exchange is funded primarily by the Environmental Protection Agency, partnering with the relevant enterprise boards.

A little bit of history:

Tallaght is Middle Irish for pit of tears, being made up of the Gaelic words “tamh”, meaning pit and “lachta” meaning tears. The words, “Tamhlacht Muintir Partholón” denote its state as a mass grave, and is mentioned in Lebor Gabála Érenn (or Book Of Invasions)

as being the burial place of thousands of Partholonians who died from a plague very much like the Black Death. Saint Maelruain established a monastic settlement in Tallaght in 796 ad. By this time Tallaght and Swords were considered centres of learning and were also known as the “Eyes of Ireland”.

We cannot change the past but with

God’s help we can be motivated to rise above and beyond it. At TFC we want to bring a vibrant hope and blessing into our local community and start to become a centre for life and learning and community in West Tallaght.

Who We Are:

We are a group of ordinary people from various backgrounds who have come into a living faith in Jesus Christ. We are part of the mainstream Christian Church seeking to live for and obey the one true God. Our meetings are simple in style and structure and our desire is that we would live out our Christian faith every day of the week and not just Sundays.

Where We Meet:

We currently rent a Unit at Brookfield Enterprise Centre which serves as a base for our offices as well as for mid week meetings for adults, youth and children. On Sundays we have the use of the Roadstone Suite in the main building at the Centre where we meet as a group from 11.30am for about an hour. Our Church is international in flavour and welcomes all who come along even if it is only to visit or just “have a look”.

What We do in our Meetings:

We come together to worship God. He has done so much for us that we love to get together to pray and thank Him. When we

meet together we usually have some music and singing. We also have some inspiring teaching from the Bible. The Bible has an important message for us in todays world, and it is our guidebook to life. Often we will pray for one another asking God to provide for our needs, help us with problems, heal the sick and guide us in our lives to be pleasing to Him.

The Bigger Picture:

Our Church is part of a larger organisation called the Elim Pentecostal Movement (which began in Monaghan in 1915). Elim itself is part of the Pentecostal or Charismatic stream of the Christian Church which is made up of thousands of local churches on every continent and currently has about 600 million adherents worldwide.

We believe that God has a purpose for our lives. We believe that He can change our lives for the better and help us to make a positive difference in our families, our community, our city and our nation.

The increase in popularity of caravan and camping holidays continues as the latest figures show that the sector now accounts for 20 per cent of all domestic holiday bednights in Ireland. Since 2009, the number of bednights offered by the sector has more than doubled from 1.5 million to over 3 million*. And according to the Irish Caravan and Camping Council (ICC), its members have the capacity to grow further in line with demand.

Speaking at the launch of the ICC’s campaign to encourage more Irish people to go camping this summer, Con Quill, chairperson of the ICC, says the increase in demand is due not only to the excellent value but also the unique holiday experience that caravan and camping offers.

“We know from our own research that more Irish people are choosing to holiday at our parks around the country. Last year, 75 per cent of those visiting parks were Irish, up from less than half in 2010. We also saw a 20 per cent jump in the numbers of families holidaying with us in the same period. It is heartening to see more Irish visitors but we believe there is scope to increase these numbers,” Quill said.

He added: “While camping

holidays account for a fifth of all holiday accommodation bednights in the country, caravan and camping still goes unnoticed by a large number of Irish holiday makers. In the UK, the sector accounts for one third of bednights and given our proximity and similar climate, we know that there is the potential for growth.

“For the summer season, we’re focusing our efforts on the domestic market and actively encouraging people to get out and experience camping at any of our member parks. The majority of our parks are in the three and four star category and have first-class facilities and activities that would match, or better, any park in Europe. And while our weather is unpredictable, the right preparation will ensure you and your family will have a fantastic experience.”

The ICC also formally launched its new free Camping Ireland app for iPhone and Android. The app can be used to easily locate campsites and contains a built-in route finder to help users travel from park to park. The app also gives a detailed description of every campsite, including contact information, facilities and special offers.

A full list of ICC caravan and camping parks can also be found on www.camping-ireland.ie and in the 2013 Guide.

The Green Dog Walkers programme was launched by Mayor Cathal King in Sean Walsh Park, Tallaght on the 30th April. Present to help with the launch were memebers of the DSPCA, the Kennel Club, the Council’s Dog wardens and local resident dog owner Sharon Murphy.Green Dog Walkers (GDW) is a regional programme involving South Dublin County Council, Dun Laoghaire- Rathdown County Council, Fingal County Council, Meath County Council and Wicklow County Council.

It is a non-confrontational, friendly way to change attitudes about dog fouling in South Dublin County. Green Dog Walkers is a community based scheme that volunteers in the community can adopt in their own area and promote.

The Mayor Cathal King “I welcome this initiative and am delighted to officially launch the Green Dog Walkers programme in Sean Walsh. Dog fouling is a very serious health issue. Young children are particularly at risk. Dog owners should take responsibility for their dogs and make sure they clean up after the dog. The Green Dog Walkers programme is a great way to raise awareness of the way to look after your dog. I look forward to meeting lots of green dog walkers in the County.”

A spokesperson from Tallaght Hospital said “We welcome the launch of the

Green Dog Walking Initiative. We support the objective to improve our local environment by the responsible management of dog fouling by dog owners. We believe this initiative will help enhance the wellbeing of our community by reducing the risk of infection posed by dog fouling.” Tony Kavanagh from Rathfarnham Tidy Towns was also present and said “Tidy Towns welcomes this programme as dog fouling is a real problem and a health risk”

Volunteers wear a Green Dog Walkers armbandwhich signifies that they have “taken the pledge” to always:

• clean up after their dog

• wear the arm and or put the Green Dog Walkers collar on their dog when walking

• carry extra dog waste bags

• be happy to be approached to ‘lend’ a dog waste bag to those without

• be a friendly reminder to other dog walkers to clean up after their dogs

The green arm band acts asa friendly reminder to please pick up after your dog. All you have to do is sign a pledge form which can be got through www.socialcredits.ie then we will post you out a Green Dog Walker armband and a GDW bone dog bag dispenser.

You can also run a scheme in your

area by adopting the Green Dog Walker programme for your area.

To adopt the Green Dog Walker you need to:

• be a constituted community group

• Administer the project eg distribution of materials, meeting mailing costs, etc.

• help with promotion of the campaign in your area

• run or take part as a volunteer in at least 3 pledge booths or GDW events annually

• help with the monitoring and evaluating of the campaign at a local level e.g. before and after surveys, participate in questionnaires sent and feedback on the number of armband wearers approached to ask for a dog bag etc.

“Bin It” campaign underway Year two of the renewed three-year Gum Litter Taskforce campaign was launched today in Tallaght IT by Mayor of South Dublin County, Councillor Cathal King.

The campaign aims to reduce gum litter by raising awareness amongst the public that dropping gum on the ground is littering and carries a €150 fine. The GLT campaign encourages the public to dispose of their used gum responsibly.

Speaking at the launch, Mayor of South Dublin County, Councillor Cathal King said “ I am delighted to launch the Anti Gum Litter Campaign her in the IT Tallaght. It is wonderful to see the involvement of the Students Union here to highlight the blight of gum litter . We hope that when the local authorities, industry and the general public work together this will make a tangible difference to South Dublin County streets.

The theme of the 2012-2014 advertising campaign is “Bin It Your Way” and it features a series of professionally choreographed and highly innovative dance moves which communicate the responsible disposal of gum litter in

an engaging way. The campaign also includes:

• A four month mass media advertising campaign (TV, outdoor, print and online).

• A schools education programme aimed at first and second year secondary school students called “Bin It!” This includes an actor-led workshop tour which take place in schools each autumn and which is supported by materials and tools for teachers to download and integrate into lesson plans. (www.chewitbinit.com)

• A dedicated website www.gumlittertaskforce.ie and Facebook page www.facebook.com/binityourway

• Distribution of Point-of-Sale materials to over 1,000 retailers around the country.

• Litter monitoring by local authorities to assess how much littered gum is reduced on- streets as a result of the campaign.

• Sponsorship of three awards in the TidyTowns competition.

Last year the GLT campaign achieved a 28% reduction in gum litter nationally. A nationwide on-street attitudes and awareness survey also showed there was a significant improvement in public perception, with gum that is irresponsibly disposed, clearly viewed as ‘litter’ by those surveyed.

GLT Chairman Mr Paul Kelly welcomed the significant increase in Local Authority uptake this year. “Local authority

involvement is absolutely critical to the success of the campaign.. I look forward to working closely with them to make the campaign a success. We were delighted with the results of the 2012 GLT campaign as it achieved its main goals of reducing the overall level of gum litter on our streets and promoting a change in the culture and attitude towards gum litter.” added Mr Kelly.”

Dublin South West Sinn Féin TD, Seán Crowe, has welcomed the Department of Sport’s decision to allocate one million euro in funding for amateur boxing clubs in 2013. Deputy Crowe said: Amateur boxing clubs are a vital part of many communities around the country, including the Dublin South West constituency. “They provide top-class training and exercise to a huge amount of children and adults in every county on this island. In the north, boxing clubs also helped to break down sectarianism and division. “However boxing clubs have always had to scrape together funding in Ireland, and many of them are totally underfunded, despite the international success our boxers have had on the world stage. “This latest allocation of funding is specifically ear-marked for female changing rooms, heating systems, and shower rooms, and the maximum amount a club can apply for is €25,000. There is also €5,000 available for remedial repairs.“Ear-marking funding for female changing rooms is directly related to the surge of interest from women and girls in boxing, which has followed Katie Taylor’s exciting gold medal Olympic win. “In order to be eligible for this

funding a club must have full planning permission for the work, an up to date fire certificate, and a disabled access certificate.

“To avail of the funding clubs need to firstly apply in writing to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) and they should contact the IABA for more detailed information about the funding.”

community in Gaza love their football and they were delighted to hear about Shamrock Rovers and said they would be the Hoops supporters club in the Gaza Strip. It is ironic, and wrong, that Michel Platini and UEFA are allowing Israel hold the UEFA under 21 championships in a few weeks despite Israel blowing up small football stadiums.

Pat Rabbitte TD, Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources is delighted with Newlands Cross Decision. “Contracts for the first Public Private Partnership road contract since 2007 were signed today in what is a milestone in Ireland’s economic recovery, my Government colleague, Leo Varadkar T.D., Minister for Transport, has announced. The bottleneck at Newlands Cross on the N7 Limerick/Cork/Waterford Road will be removed. The fly-over will remove the last traffic light between Cork, Limerick, Waterford and the border with Northern Ireland. Some 80,000 vehicles pass through Newlands Cross every day and the project will provide welcome relief to commuters, as well as those on longer journeys. The fly-over will take N7 traffic up and over the R113 Fonthill/Belgard Road, thus minimising local traffic impact. Traffic signals will be installed at the two points where the ramps meet the local roads, with dedicated turning lanes provided for the Belgard/

Fonthill Road. This project is part of a €282m contract which also consists of the N11 Arklow-Rathnew upgrade. The entire project is due to be completed within two years and on-site works are expected to begin within weeks”, Minister Rabbitte said.

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Trade and Diaspora, Seán Crowe TD, has welcomed the decision of several major clothing brands to sign the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh.

Crowe raised the issue on fire and building safety in Bangladesh’s garment factories in the Dáil last week, in light of the two recent tragic incidents in Bangladeshi garment factories, which claimed the lives of over 1,100 workers.

Deputy Crowe said: “I welcome the decision of Primark, H&M, Marks and Spencer’s, Tesco, and Inditex, which is the corporate owner of the Zara chain, and others to support and sign the Accord in Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh when it is published today. I am calling on all clothing brands with operations in Bangladesh to support this Accord and sign it today.

“The Accord, which was initiated by international unions and NGOs, is a binding program of fire safety reforms based on independent inspections, worker-led health and safety committees and union access to factories.

“The signatories also commit to underwrite improvements in dangerous factories and properly confront fire safety and structural problems, and the Accord also importantly grants workers the right to refuse dangerous work or work in unsafe conditions.

Crowe welcomes support from big clothing brands

“The Rana Plaza building collapse on April 24, which claimed over 1,100 lives, and the separate factory fire which killed 8 workers last Thursday, appalled people the world over.

“While it is important the Bangladeshi Government’s instigates reforms to improve the working conditions and rights of workers in the country, there also needs to be action from the private sector, but self-regulation wasn’t working.

“When I spoke on the issue in the Dáil last week, I drew a comparison with the Stardust tragedy in Dublin. This tragic event showed that self-regulation doesn’t work and that there is a critical need for strong regulation and a pro-active safety regime, to improve the fire and safety of buildings.

“In the Irish Government’s new development policy paper for Irish Aid they gave a strong commitment to ensure they would work toward the fulfilment of human rights, including promoting decent work, around the world. It also contained a commitment to work with Irish companies to help promote good development and human rights practice.

“The Government must stick to this important commitment. Decent work and workers’ rights are a key element in improving people’s health, reducing inequality, and instigating development and building a fairer society.”

Microchipping has led to a family being reunited with their beautiful male husky, Harley, after going missing for three years. Harley’s owners had long since given up on seeing him again until he made his way into the DSPCA . He was picked up in Shankill last Thursday by a kind family who found him wandering in the area and they brought him to the DSPCA because he had an upset stomach. On his arrival he was checked for a microchip and the registered owner was called. Imagine the DSPCA’s surprise to find that the dog had been reported missing in March 2010 when he went missing from the families garden on the Malahide Road. Harvey was only 7 months old when he went missing. His owner arrived at the shelter to collect and was delighted to see her little puppy “all grown up!” Animals reunited like this because of micrchipping are proof of the importance of pet owners keeping information on microchip databases up to date and the importance of traceability. In the past year the DSPCA have reunited numerous animals with their owners due to microchips including a West Highland terrier after more than 2 years and a cat that had been missing for 11 months. The DSPCA recommends all pet owners to have their dogs and cats microchipped so they can be reunited with their pets even after a long absence. It is also recommending that pet owners who already have their pets microchipped check that the information is up to date and that phone numbers are correct. For more information on the benefits of microchipping your pets check out www.dspca.ie

Reports coming out of the Division of Human Services indicate a growing shift in the behaviour of young adolescent girls. This is linked to an increase in the number of cases of abuse involving young women, and the absence of a residential home as a means of social support, says Director of the Division of Human Services, Elizabeth Lewis. There is a place for our males in the form of the Boys Training Centre (BTC). A boy who is exhibiting serious behavioural problems can be placed by the courts at BTC. We have no such thing for the girls.

With over 640 jobs saved in the B & Q and a further 137 jobs saved in Pamela Scott, “this was a good day for job retention, particularly in Tallaght, where 90 jobs approximately were saved “ says Deputy Eamonn Maloney TD.

“Saving these jobs was a vindication of the both the Examiner process and the renegotiation of commercial rents and made sense in the current economic climate. Retaining jobs is every bit as important as creating new jobs. The additional investment and the negotiated rent reductions will ensure a more realistic overhead expense for the operation of both companies. These businesses are now on a firm financial basis and this gives great confidence for the future. It also lifts the great stress and worry experienced by the workers of both companies in recent months.”

“The struggle to retain jobs is also highlighted by the experience of Extra-vision which has been placed in receivership. I hope that the Receiver will save jobs and ensure that an enterprise capable of competing with cutting edge technology and the downloading revolution will emerge from the receivership process. I call on the State authorities to cooperate with the receiver in all efforts to ensure the survival of the group with the maximum number of jobs.”

HOROSCOPESAries May is a money month for you, dear Aries, but as it progresses, it’s more about learning and connecting. You can now take charge of your finances and generate new ideas regarding how to spend wisely. It’s best to wait until after the 9th before taking action, when any anxieties about what you really want to do lift, but do pay attention to important advice or newfound knowledge on the 7th. Independent or competitive (not so much cooperative) activities are highly favored. Business demands are strong all year, but as May progresses, you’re entering a stage in which there is much less emphasis on the outer world and more on what’s going on inside. The 24-28 can point to a speaking engagement, an unveiling or culmination of a recent work-in-progress, or a publishing of your work. It’s time to diversify and meet a variety of people - to come out of your shell. Your success depends heavily on others now. A nice bonus - financial or possibly romantic - can come your way on the 28th.

Taurus As the month begins, you are at once busy peacemaking and building bridges with others and tending to your personal needs, dear Taurus. However, by the 9-10, you may be digging in your heels and pursuing your own desires. Your own needs become critical, and if you’re not getting what you want, you’re likely to take a stand now. Generally speaking, however, things are playing in your favor. With Mars in your sign all month, your independence and freedom are especially important to you. Your desire nature is very powerful in May. You may need to tone it down a little, but if you use this period well, you’ll have all the courage necessary to make your dreams happen. A payout or issue of debt figures strongly in the last week of the month. There could be a significant gift or bonus. You might also reach a turning point in a partnership, and a decision about whether to make it official and merge your resources can be a pressing matter. Some of you are inclined to indulge yourself with a big purchase.

Gemini The first few weeks of May tend to be quiet for you, dear Gemini,, at least on the surface of things. The state of your inner world, on the other hand, is especially active and at times chaotic. Try to treat this period as a time for gathering your energies and closing important projects, relationships, or situations. Your mental energies are quickened from the 15-31 while Mercury is in your sign, favoring any task that involves getting your point across effectively! Your romantic life becomes considerably more straightforward after the 9th, or at least your wants and desires from romance is less complicated. A disappointment around the 13th can eventually lead to a breakthrough in the last week of the month. There can be some fuss about money owing or funding around the 20th, but shortly after this, you’re feeling more in your natural element. Be cool around the 24th, when emotions can be wacky and relationship drama is likely. Jupiter will not be in your sign for much longer (until June 25th), so take advantage of any opportunities that this happy planet provides you. This month, it’s likely to be around the 26-28, when you are attracting both people and positive circumstances into your life. Even so, energy levels can be low much of the month, and you may want to wait for June to launch major new beginnings.

Cancer A lively agenda is in store for you in the first few weeks of the month, dear Cancer. You are in demand and

highly stimulated. New beginnings on the social front are in order, and your social life is about to become very busy. This is a good time to join groups or associations that interest you, but be careful not to overdo it, as later this month, you’re in need of extra privacy and rest. People around you, particularly a partner, parent, or people at work, can be cantankerous on the 20th and in the days surrounding it. Changes are necessary, but the route to peace is unlikely to be clear at the moment. From the 9th, although friends continue to seek you out, romantic relationships can become confusing or complicated. At times, particularly in the last week of the month, you might actually enjoy the complications. While a health or work matter vies for your attention around the lunar eclipse of the 24th, there is an increasing need for some time out. Don’t fight it, by all means. Listen to your body’s signals. Next month, Jupiter, the planet of growth and expansion (and what some might consider luck) enters your sign for a year-long stay. Choose now to become clear what it is you’d like to change, seek, or conquer.

Leo Others continue to take notice of you more than usual in May, dear Leo, and it’s time to show them what you can do! Watch for distinct opportunities to advance your career interests or improve your social standing in the first few weeks of the month. There can be a new beginning of sorts happening on the career front. There can be an important culmination of a work or home matter. Some of you will enjoy increased recognition, an award, or even a promotion. Around the 20th, energy shifts towards “happiness” goals rather than professional ones. There can be some frustration at this time, however, with your ability to count on others as well as the demands of a difficult schedule. Emotions run very high around the Lunar Eclipse on the 24th. Romance can be exhilarating at this time, but do watch for illusions, which can have you see-sawing up and down. The 26-28 is very strong for your social life. Some of you could be meeting a love interest through a group, social networking, or a friend. Don’t hide yourself away at this time, but also be wary of overdoing your pursuit of pleasure.

Virgo An adventurous spirit continues to grab hold of you in the first weeks of May, dear Virgo, with a nice collection of cosmic bodies in your solar ninth house. This stimulates your need to break out of a rut or a routine. It’s a good time to schedule a vacation, if possible, or to leave your weekends free for out of the ordinary activities or mini-getaways. Your normally keen attention to details is somewhat lacking this month, not due to inability but because of emotional orientation. Educational or travel opportunities can present themselves. Some of you could get published. Your social life is pleasant and easygoing, but below the surface of matters, your passions are stirred and hard to deny. There can be some tensions regarding an intimate relationship, the distribution or sharing of money, attention to children, or power dynamics in a close relationship. This month favors promotion of all kinds, group activities, making important contacts, and venturing beyond your normal routine. The last week of May brings an energy shift towards career and family. There can be recognition of your work or skills on the 27-28. There can also be some shifting around and movement in your family life, as changes suddenly seem appropriate.

Libra This is a month for settling outstanding accounts and

collecting money owed, dear Libra, although the going may not always be easy. Finances are a large focus for you, but so is intimacy. Relationships can be tricky, especially if you focus too intensely on problem areas, which is a real tendency. Expanding your personal resources is especially important to you now, and so is taking a few risks and enjoying your bounty! It can be challenging to accommodate both needs at once. A loan, bonus, refund, or mortgage may come through, and a partner, if applicable, might enjoy a pay raise. Do your best not to over-think around the 24th, and be careful what you allow yourself to believe, as others are not giving you the full story. There can be an important culmination on an educational level for some of you. Your spirits lift considerably in the last week of the month, and when it comes to love and friendship, you’re more inclined to put your faith in others rather than question their motives. The 27-28 is strong for love, communication, travel, and making connections.

Scorpio This is a big year for you, dear Scorpio, and this month, other people in your life, and particularly those closest to you, have much to show you about the direction you need to take. This may not be explicit, and in fact can come through your own intuition when faced with people’s actions, but the message will nevertheless be clear if you choose to listen to it. From the 9th forward, relationships are changing. New energy is brought to a partnership, or might even bring a new partnership into your life. This is a time for recognizing how important a partner is in your life. After a Lunar Eclipse in your sign in April, and with Saturn’s ongoing transit of Scorpio, you may have been feeling isolated or unsupported recently. May is a time for repairing your relationships and for reminders of your need for closeness. The 16-20 can be challenging when it comes to juggling mundane tasks in your daily life. It’s difficult to rely on others at work, and even to count on your own schedule. The last week of May can bring important revelations about money, business, and your intimate life. An excellent time for talking about your needs is the 26-28, when others are responsive and some of the usual barriers and boundaries dissolve in a relationship.

Sagittarius While work and mundane matters take center stage in the first few weeks of May, social matters begin to come into focus from the 9th. Attention to detail on the job and around the home is important this month, even if your mind is wandering. Organizing the little things will go a long way towards a stronger sense of accomplishment. You can work longer hours than usual, or push harder in health and fitness routines. While the Solar Eclipse on the 9th can bring new energy into your daily routines, and new work or work projects altogether for some of you, it can also temporarily drain you if you are pushing yourself beyond your limits. There can be some challenges with money (and love) around the 20th, when an ongoing problem resurfaces. A Lunar Eclipse occurs in your sign on the 24th, and this can bring a personal or relationship to a head. This can point to a significant culmination in your life, as it is the last in a series of eclipses in Sagittarius and your opposing sign, Gemini, that began December 2010. The 27-28 can be powerful for attracting or enhancing a close

relationship.

Capricorn Pleasure, love, and creative expression continue to figure

strongly in your life this month, dear Capricorn. Romantic relationships

can be stimulating and possibly over-stimulating at times. This is not the time to make long-term commitments, but if you resolve to enjoy yourself in the moment, this can be a spirit-feeding, pleasurable time in your life. The Solar Eclipse on the 9th can affect you in a number of different ways, as it occurs in your sector of romance, hobbies, creativity, and children. This eclipse acts to usher in change and new beginnings in one or more of these areas, and your life may feel as if it’s been turned upside down, likely in a very positive way. An ongoing issue with personal freedom resurfaces the 16-20. Family relations or home conditions can be tricky at this time. The Lunar Eclipse on the 24th illuminates a private matter - something that has been left unresolved and now needs settling. The 27-28 is strong for making connections through work or health routines. Your sense of well-being can be especially strong now.

Aquarius Home and family life are in strong focus this month, dear Aquarius. The domestic life is busy, and it’s a strong time for home projects as well as for strengthening ties with those closest to you, particularly on the 4-5 and 11-12. Even so, changes in your family dynamic or home life are necessary, and may be a long time coming, as a Solar Eclipse occurs on the 9th and brings powerful energy for new beginnings in your personal life. Watch for temper tantrums or making angry or too-revealing statements around the 16-20, when you’re inclined to speak before you think about the consequences. Your romantic life begins to assume more importance as May progresses, and while there can be some social drama in your life now, for the most part you’re likely to have a good time. The last week of May presents a favorable period for announcing or showing your creative work. It can mark an important culmination or turning point in a friendship. The 27-28 is powerful for your romantic life. This is a time for making pleasant connections.

Pisces For many of you, career and/or family matters have been unsettled or evolving in the past couple of years, as necessary changes have been taking place that serve to nudge you into a new and improved direction, dear Pisces. This month, you receive the final cosmic push towards your new beginnings. The Lunar Eclipse on the 24th can bring recognition or the culmination of an important project. May begins with a busy, sometimes maddening pace that can reach an overwhelming point around the Solar Eclipse on the 9th. You are reaching out to others and enjoying the connections you’re making, and many of you are all fired up over a new or renewed personal interest. Chores and errands can be excessive, and you might have to deal with transportation problems and communication breakdowns on top of it all, The last few days of May, however, brings a stronger desire to enjoy the peace and security of family life, and less interest in venturing far from home, as well as nice opportunities to bond with those closest to you. This can also be a time that you indulge in a luxury item for the home, or when money comes through to fund a project.

Female hormones in beer

Yesterday, scientists in the United States revealed that beer contains small traces of female hormones.

To prove their theory, they fed one hundred men twelve pints of beer and observed that 100% of them started talking nonsense and couldn’t drive.

Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State, Brian Hayes has welcomed the progress being made in job creation after the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, and the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD, announced that 144 out of 150 measures scheduled in the Action Plan for Jobs have been implemented in the first quarter of 2013. The implementation of these measures comes at a time when 1,000 new private sector jobs are being created each month.

“The implementation of 144 out of 150 measures in the Action Plan for Jobs in the first quarter of 2013, shows that the Government is delivering on its commitment to create the environment for job creation in Ireland. The practical impact of this progress is seen in the creation of 1,000 new private sector jobs a month. This is a welcome contrast to the previous Government which oversaw the

loss of 7,000 jobs per month. Although this shows that we are moving in the right direction, there is still a huge amount to be done.

“This Government has helped transform how the international community sees Ireland and this has reaped dividends in the form of significant job creation by international companies in Ireland and record exports of Irish products. Over the past 15 months, an additional 15,000 jobs have been created in the private sector. Irish and multinational exporting companies had record years in 2012, and our exports have hit levels 16% above the pre-2008 high.

“The previous Fianna Fáil-led Government based its economic model on property, banking and debt and it ruined our economy. The worst legacy of that regime is the 250,000 jobs that were lost in three years. This Government will continue to enable the transition to a sustainable economy based on exports, innovation and enterprise. We believe that this will provide the jobs that we so badly need.

“The Government’s job is to create the environment for jobs. This Government

has done this by reducing red tape for small businesses, investing in 3rd level ICT programmes which will attract investors and going out and selling Ireland to investors abroad. The creation of 1,000 new private sector jobs a month shows that this approach is working.

“As part of the plan to make Ireland a leading location for ICT skills we have:

• Provided 2,000 additional places at ICT-graduate level;

• Increased by 50% the number of job permits granted over the coming year in the ICT sector;

• Provided for 700 additional graduates from ICT skills conversion Programmes, and 600 additional graduates from Springboard ICT courses.

“As well as delivering on the larger-scale projects, we continue the equally necessary programme of rebuilding the small business sector:

• We have reduced red tape for small businesses by implementing the 10 Point Tax

Plan for the SME sector;

• We are closely monitoring the lending targets for the two pillar banks;

• We have facilitated the NPRF’s delivery of a new suite of SME investment funds.

“We have revised our legislation to provide a deterrent to late payments in the economy and improve business cash-flow. We are granting visas free of charge and on an accelerated basis to visitors from abroad attending specific events during The Gathering.

“Far too many people are still out of work and many people are struggling. However this announcement shows that we are making real progress. Jobs are and will remain the top priority of this Government, and we will continue to implement the changes necessary to rebuild the economy.”

Implementation of Action Plan for Jobs is backed up by the creation of 1,000 jobs a month - Hayes

Tallafest TCC, celebrating 40 years this year, are proud to launch Tallafest, a free family event which will run over 2 days, on the 6 and 7th of July this summer - uniquely marrying the urban and rural aspects of Tallaght. It will be based on Main Street, Tallaght Village on day 1, moving to our Tallaght countryside on day 2.

Tallafest is a family celebration of the rich history, environment and the arts in Tallaght - activites on the two days will include, guided nature walks, live music, a kids play zone, a sports zone, a pet show, a fun run, a Sunday cycle, live outdoor art, marching bands and a tractor run - the programme is growing day by day !

Check out the TCC and Tallafest facebook page for the latest updates on the 2 festival day event programme..

Tallafest has emerged following a think tank last Autumn held by TCC which saw cross community support - this support has gone from strength to strength. It is now a labour of love for TCC in collaboration with a growing

list of local and national activity groups, community groups, sporting teams, local businesses and departments from SDCC and is a testiment to the strong voluntary commitment from this cross community organising committee. It is a real team effort and shows that volunteerism is alive and kicking in Tallaght !

TCC extend a huge, heartfelt thanks to everyone who is on board and volunteering on Tallafest. The door is still firmly open to anyone else who wants to come on board to make Tallafest a unique, enjoyable weekend in Tallaght.

Tallafest was officially launched by TCC in Molloys on 1st of May. The mayor, Cathal King, TPOTY ‘12, Norman Kelly, TCC and the Tallafest organising committee were joined by a host of local figures from the historical, environmental and arts community. The launch was held in Molloys, Main Street, who themselves are celebrating 80 years in business in Tallaght this summer.

Those gathered for the launch were treated to musical performances by the very talented Tallaght musicans, Ray Scully and The Quicksand Band. The Tallaght farming community were well represented by the Bohernabreena Tractor Run committee and representatives from the IFA, not to mention, Larry the lamb. Larry will be one of the focal points on Sunday, where a competition will be run to guess his weight !

Local award winning wildlife photographer, Michael Finn, Liz Mc Evoy from Tales and Trails and members of the Irish Wildlife Trust and Bird Watch Ireland were on hand to launch their outdoor Tallafest activities which will help festival goers to get out into the great outdoors to savour our rich environment and wild life we have in our Tallaght parklands.

The Tallaght arts community is also alive and kicking - with local authors Louise Phillps and Michael Whelan in attendance at the launch - the summer festival will

feature read alongs and writing workshops. The diverse Tallaght musical community was out in force at the launch with a real cross section of music represented, the Tallaght Choral Society, Ray Scully, The Quicksand Band and The Level heads all celebrating the launch of Tallafest.
