The fund is built up by a targeted rate of $5.80 per property in the region, with unallocated funding carried over to the following financial year. The per-household contribution may be about the price of a cup of coffee, but helps to fund these types of projects, so important to the support of our biodiversity. The Whenuakite Kiwi Care Project, together with the other four recipients, will provide pest control for 25,000 hectares, 1 per cent of the Waikato’s total land area, including some of the region’s most ecologically significant areas. Whenuakiwi Trust has been protecng Coromandel brown kiwi on 3554ha of private and public conservaon land in the Whenuakite area, between Hot Water Beach and Tairua, since 2000. The area is a stronghold for kiwi with over 130 pairs reported, and has large populations of kereru, kākā, biern and pateke. The project has about 30 acve volunteers. This funding will help cover the operation manager’s wages and some material costs, such as replacement traps, bait and office equipment. Whenuakiwi Trust fundraiser and trapper, Janice Hinds, summed up the group’s gratude saying, “This is our forever project. We love what we are doing. A reminder that TCDC's annual rates rebate clinics will be held at the Hub in Pauanui on Wednesday 5 August from 9 to 12 and then at Tairua Library from 1 to 4pm. If you want to know more about the rates rebate scheme and your eligibility for rates relief, then put the time and date on your social calendar and go along to find out. Tairua Print’s front win-dow digital signage has drawn lots of positive com-ment as it showcases stun-ning Tairua and Coromandel imagery, courtesy of Peter Jackson, Brett McEwen and Destination Coromandel. If you have Tairua-promoting footage, and would like the opportunity to have it dis-played alongside our current offerings, call in and speak with Barry. This is a compli-mentary service promoting our part of the country to the many domestic visitors coming to town.Tairua Senior Rugby faced a stiff challenge when they took on Coromandel last Saturday at Coromandel. Coromandel sat alongside Tairua at the top of the table until this clash, with Tairua ahead on points difference. This Saturday Tairua is at home on Cory Park Domain to Mercury Bay, kick off at 2pm, for the last of the round-robin series. On Au-gust 8 the qualifying semi-finals will be played, with the winner of the two top qualify-ing teams’ match receiving the Morrissey Cup.Tairua Market is on this Saturday 1 August from 9am. After a break dur-ing lockdown, the market resumed last month, well-supported by locals and visi-tors to town. If you would like more information, or would like to have a stall, please contact coordinator, Desma Woolley on 864 8339.

Those of us hanging out for trans-Tasman and Pacific Island ‘bubbles,’ have been disappointed by the resurgence of COVID-19 across the ditch. What we thought was contained has started to spiral out of control, especially in Victoria. The scary thing is that it hasn’t just occurred at the border, it is being transmitted across communities. What lessons, then, can we learn from what is happening there? Tairua Pharmacy has sent us a reminder that we need to remain vigilant! As safe as we feel in our little COVID-free part of the country, we shouldn’t lose sight of the simple and effective routines we were used to during lockdown. Hand hygiene was proven to be a most effective way to restrict viral spread and we used hand sanitisers to the point of exhaustion. Everywhere we went we were squirting dollops of the stuff and smearing it repeatedly, all over. Like toilet paper for a while, hand sanitiser was soon

Remainingvigilant

unavailable or in very limited supply. Although all of our latest cases of COVID are in managed isolation, there is always a risk of a viral outbreak. Maria at the Pharmacy said that it was still important to keep up our hygiene measures, and to that end she assured us the Pharmacy has “enough hand sanitiser to fill a swimming pool”. This advice comes on the back of a sudden rush last week following one of the breakfast TV shows suggesting we all needed to keep stocks of sanitisers, disposable gloves, face masks etc, in our homes “just in case”. All of these items are now back in stock, you’ll be pleased to know. Maria went on to say that the other measures like keeping our immunity levels high were not to be forgotten either. Generously she has been bringing boxes of kiwifruit from home to give away at the shop, because of their high Vitamin C levels! Over and above!

Tairua Senior Rugby had a tough challenge last Saturday at Coromandel, going down 20-16, their first loss of the season. "A great game, played in the right spirit by two very committed sides. For Tairua, Glenn Strange was a stand-out performer, the back-row grafted and tackled themselves to a standstill all afternoon."
