A Word from our New Seminarian
Dear St. Peter's,
My name is Christopher Dell, but please call me Chris.
I am currently a Middler (second-year) seminarian at
the University of the South, and I am excited to join you
as your Field Ed seminarian in late January.
I was born in Huntsville, Alabama, grew up in a coastal suburb of Jackson-
ville, FL, and recently celebrated my 27th birthday in Sewanee, Tennessee.
My interests include visual arts, guitar, videogames, tennis, golf, science-
fiction, and languages. I also love to cook, especially dishes with pasta.
Before seminary, I worked in youth ministry and in food service at a retire-
ment community.
I came to the Episcopal Church as a young child when my father became the
organist of an Episcopal parish. The clergy, staff, and parishioners of that
parish played an immensely significant role in my life then and continue to
encourage me now. In particular, my experience of youth ministry, both at the
parish and diocesan level, had a profound impact on the strengthening of my
faith and the early discernment of my call to the priesthood.
I first met Fr. Quinn (before he was ordained) when I was a teenager
involved in diocesan youth ministry in the Diocese of Florida. Now I am
excited to work with him and to get to know the parish he now loves and
serves. I look forward to getting to know you all as we learn, pray, and
worship together throughout next year.
God bless, Chris

ST. PETER’S YOUTH
(Pictured: ChattEY at St. Timothy’s, Signal Mountain;

Youth and Parents,
The holiday season is upon us and there is so much to be thankful for. In
November, the St. Peter’s Youth played kickball with the ChattEY community,
learned about the importance of Sacred Stories, and got ready for a break
from school. In the season of Advent we look forward to the coming of Christ
into the world. I challenge all youth and families to see how they can bring
the light of Christ to others in their schools and communities this month.
Blessings, Kelsey Wofford

A Word from our New Deacon, the Rev. John Rouser
I was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and raised in
Greensboro, the youngest of 4 boys. My father was born in
Pennsylvania and my mother and brothers in Minnesota. Since I
was the first in my family to be born in the south, I consider
myself the true “Rebel Rouser” and a rabid Minnesota Vikings
fan. After high school, I attended Lenoir-Rhyne College, where I
studied Special Education for the Hearing Impaired and Physical Education. I married my
wife, Gerry, in 1988 and we have two sons, Jacob and Isaac. Jacob was married last year to
Danielle and they live in Knoxville. Isaac graduated in May from TTU with a Mechanical
Engineering degree.
I grew up in the Lutheran church but had drifted away until I met Gerry, who attended
The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Newton, North Carolina. I fell in love with the
Episcopal Church and was confirmed in 1986. I served in every position possible for a Lay
person at Epiphany, twice serving as Senior Warden during times of clergy transition. We
moved to Ooltewah in 2004 and joined St Francis of Assisi, where once again I served in
Lay ministries and as Senior Warden during clergy transition. Feeling the need to do
more, I became a Diaconal Postulant in 2011 and was ordained a deacon at the diocesan
convention in 2015. I continued to serve at St Francis until this fall when Bishop George
appointed me to serve St. Peter’s.
I spent most of my adult life in sales and marketing in the IT world. Beginning in 2009 I
went through 3 bouts of unemployment and 3 company changes. I was very dissatisfied
with my career path and knew that God had a different plan for my life. The week follow-
ing my ordination I heard about a franchise opportunity called Assisted Living Locators
and in April of 2015 I purchased the local franchise and began a new chapter in my life.
Assisted Living Locators is both my ministry in the world and my vocation. I walk with
families as they go through the process of dealing with their aged parents or loved ones. I
help them find the resources needed to live at home or, if appropriate, move into an
Assisted Living community. My particular passion is walking with those who are dealing
with dementia and those who lack sufficient financial resources.
While I am sad to be leaving St. Francis, I am very excited to be coming to St. Peter’s. I
look forward to getting to know each of you and serving with Fr. Quinn and you in our
shared ministry to the world.
Peace, Deacon John

A Note from the Rector
Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus
Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and
reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
The Collect for the Fourth Sunday of Advent
Dear Friends in Christ,
The Collect above is my favorite in all of the prayer book. I love what it assumes—
that God is present with us and to us every single day. This does not mean that we
always notice it or that God’s presence always feels exactly the way we expect it
should. This is the brilliance of the two seasons we will celebrate this month, these
seasons of incarnation.
Advent, if we let it, will train our hearts to pay attention to, to look for, to long for
God’s presence. It comes to us when we most need it. If your life is anything like
mine, we find our days winding up as we enter December. There is so much to do.
Parties to attend, gifts to buy, cookies to bake (and eat!), and family to entertain.
Much of this is good and fun and even holy. Some of it is not.
Advent asks us to pause every now and then as our world and lives are thrown into
a frenzy, with all the grace and trouble that go with it. This season of preparation
says, “God is coming; in fact, God is here. So take a breath every once in a while
to notice it!” December is a busy time, but God longs to be known by us, even in
the midst of that busyness.
We’ve known the Christmas story as long as we can remember. Two poor,
confused parents give birth to a son in the middle of nowhere, in a backwoods
outpost of an unimportant country in the middle of an empire. And somehow this
is the way God chose to break into the world. This child is the one the angels
praise, the prophets longed for, the magi sought. This child is the one who
brought salvation to us all. What grace that God shows up this way.
As these seasons approach, take time to pause. Take time to notice where God is,
to perceive his “daily visitation.” Take time to be amazed that salvation can break
in on you in forms you’d never have imagined and at times you’d least expect.
Grace and Peace, Fr. Quinn+
St. Peter’s Episcopal School News December 2017
Love of Learning:
Congratulations to our third and fourth grade math teams! Under the direction
of math specialist, Mrs. Kimberly Copeland, these students participated in the
Perennial Math Competition at UTC. Our third grade team received FIRST
PLACE in the team competition and Nate Farnham (fourth grader) received
THIRD PLACE on the individual test. Way to go STORM!
Joy of Service:
Students will support the Northside Neighborhood House Christmas Toy Drive
this month. By donating toys and gifts, we are helping to provide over 400
children in our area with a wonderful Christmas.
A Lively Faith:
Our school continues to be blessed by SPPAT (St. Peter’s Parents and Teachers).
We are grateful for the many parents who serve more than 100 volunteer hours
at our school. The spirit of cooperation between administration, teachers, and
parents yields positive results as we work together to improve academics,
emphasize good character, and further our Episcopal identity.
