improve public spaces in Tacoma.First, the City of Tacoma received three bids from
contractors interested in a project that would bring a range of improvements to Ray C. Roberts (Tom Schuster) Memorial Park (pictured top) on Tacoma's East Side.
According to bid documents, the proj-ect includes the new construction of concrete pathways, concrete stairs with railings, a � ag pole and base, and under-ground electrical service and system ele-ments. Optional items include new park benches, the planting of an evergreen tree, topsoil and ground cover plantings, and a decorative concrete border curb.
The project budget is $50,000 to $55,000. Dead-lines to submit bids expired at 11 a.m. on Weds., Feb. 19. However, the City of Tacoma extended the bid deadline to 11 a.m. on Mon., March 3.
The three companies that placed bids include Buckley Nursery Company (Sumner, Wash.) — $106,538.00; Green Earthworks, Inc. (Tacoma, Wash.) — $138,541.48; and MAD Construction, LLC (Spanaway, Wash.) — $68,640.00.
Second, the City of Tacoma received four bids from contractors interested in a project to restore the bronze
Children's Bell sculpture (pictured below), which has been located along Ruston Way near Commencement Bay since it was created by artist Larry Anderson in 2000.
The public art piece, which can be rung by visitors, was recently removed and placed in Metro Parks Taco-ma's Parks Maintenance Building to address needed repairs.
According to bid documents, the project involves remounting the piece on a shaft foun-dation, painting existing support pipes, rebuilding gong strikers, and restoring the surrounding landscape to its origi-nal condition. The goal is to have the project completed by May 1 or in time for the summer season, according to City of Tacoma staff.
A pre-bid meeting was held on Weds., Feb. 5. Bids were to be received until 11
a.m. on Weds., Feb. 12. However, that deadline was ex-tended to 11 a.m. on Weds., Feb. 19. The project budget is $9,900.
The four companies that placed bids include Lewis Concrete, Inc. (Tacoma, Wash.) — $8,000; Green Earth-works, Inc. (Tacoma, Wash.) — $8,340; MAD Construc-tion, LLC (Spanaway, Wash.) — $6,000; and Combined Construction, Inc. (Mukilteo, Wash.) — $14,500. Ac-cording to City of Tacoma staff, low-bidder MAD Con-struction, LLC was not a veri� ed Small Works Roster vendor at the time of their bid, and therefore could not be awarded the Small Works Roster contract.

breaking ceremony later this month to kick of construction of the new Advanced Technology Center.
The two-story, 53,000-square-foot building will consist of a support wing and an instruc-tional wing that will aim to accommodate stu-dent services, trade fairs, and other events that will encourage industry partners to use, interact with, and in� uence the programs, faculty, and students.
The ceremony will be held on Tues., Mach 25, at 1:30 p.m. at Bates Technical College's Cen-tral/Mohler Campus, located at 2320 S. 19th St. Bates Technical College President Ron Langrell will join the Board of Trustees during the cer-emony. Light refreshments will be served imme-diately following the event.
