Pressure measurement

There are four types of pressure measurements:1) Measurement of absolute pressure

Measurement are made with respect to absolute pressure, for example as with atmospheric pressure

2) Measurement of relative or effect pressureMeasurements are made with respect to ambient pressure. Generally atmospheric pressure

3) Measurement of differential pressureMeasurement of difference between two pressures

4) Measurement of vacuum pressureMeasurement is referred to ambient pressure, usually atmospheric pressure.

Pressure gauges are the main mechanical means of pressure measuring. A pressure gauge incorporates an elastic sensitive element, which is measuring its own form, affected by the pressure. The value of the measured pressure is indicated, with a help of a special mechanism, by an arrow on the gauge dial, in dependence of the extent to which the sensitive element is deformed. Depending on a kind of the sensitive element and a principle used to measure pressure, pressure gauges are divided into different types.1. Pressure gauges with bourdon tube. The sensitive element of this pressure gauge type is a circular-shaped tube, which is called Bourdon tube. The tube is deformed under the pressure, causing the free end of the tube to move stretching or contracting a spring. The arrow mechanism is activated by the moves of the tube end, deformation extent of which is proportionate to the measured pressure. As a rule, for measuring pressure of 40 bar and higher, bourbon tubes with several coils are used.

3. Pressure gauges with capsule elements.The sensitive element is represented by a capsulate element, which consists of two membranes, hermetically connected to each other. The diaphragm deflection, proportionate to the measured pressure, activates the arrow mechanism. This pressure gauge type is mainly designed for high precision measuring of gas pressure.

Pressure range from 0..2,5mbar to 0..0,6bar. Accuracy from 0,1 to 2,5

2. Pressure gauges with diaphragm elements. The sensitive element is a thin corrugated membrane, deforming under the media pressure. The diaphragm deflection, proportionate to the measured pressure, activates the arrow mechanism. The advantage of this gauge type is an easy way to clean it, which is necessary when measuring pressure of viscous media. A higher level of corrosion resistance can be provided by special coating of the diaphragm.

4. Absolute pressure gauges.

This type of pressure gauge is designed for measuring pressure independently of the environment pressure (independently of atmospheric pressure fluctuations). As a rule, they have a construction similar to usual pressure gauges with diaphragm elements, with the only exception that there is vacuum on the external side of the measuring element.

Pressure range from 0..16mbar to 0..40bar. Accuracy from 0,6 to 2,5

5. Differential pressure gauges. Differential pressure gauges are designed for measuring the difference between different pressures. They have a construction similar to pressure gauges with diaphragm elements, with the only exception that instead of the atmospheric pressure, another media pressure is supplied to the other side of the diaphragm.

Pressure range from 0..2,5mbar to 0..40bar. Accuracy from 0,6 to 2,5.

Pressure gauge constructionConstruction of standard Bourdon pressure gauge.

Installation of pressure gauge1. Position

Install the gauge vertically. A pressure gauge is calibrated in a vertical position, however and this is not a defect, the pointer may be out of zero if the instrumental is horizontal, chiefly for low pressure

2. Thread sealingStandard threads are : conical thread (NPT, RT) and parallel (BSPP and metric). Seal conical threads with a PTFE tape, as well as parallel threads by a gasket next to the spigot.

3. InstallationNever install the pressure gauge by turning the case but mount it with a wrench by means of the hexagon or flats provided on the socket.

4. Shutoff valveInstall the gauge using shutoff valve. Do not connect pressure gauge directly to process.

5. VibrationsVibrations of pressure gauge must be avoided to prevent excessive wear of the mechanism. It would be better to set the gauge on a rigid support on which the vibrations of pipe have no influence. A flexible small diameter capillary can also be placed between the gauge and diaphragm seal. A capillary can also occasionally be used as a vibrations or pulsations dampener.

6. Pressure pulsationsIn case of pressure measurements of pulsating fluids a dampener should be fitted between the pressure gauge and the pipe.

7. CorrosionInstall the diaphragm seal between pressure gauge and corrosive fluid.

8. Excessive temperatures must be avoidedInstall the Syphon or Cooling tower between gauge and high pressure fluid to avoid damage of measuring system.
