Foreword by Principal

As a school, we want to develop all Josephians not just academically,

but holistically, and CCA has proven to be a key programme in

helping boys discover their strengths and who they are as persons.

Being a boy’s school, the CCAs offered are intended to cater to the

interest of our boys not only in Sports and Scouting, but also in

Performing Arts, Robotics and Chess. The wide offering is intended to

provide each boy with an opportunity to try a few CCAs over time, to

deepen his skills and passion in a specific area, and strive to excel to

the best of his ability.

While CCA is not compulsory in Primary Schools, we do encourage

each boy to take part in a CCA while they are in SJI Junior. CCAs are

an excellent platform to develop the characters of our boys and our

CCA programmes will incorporate the 7 Habits to inculcate values in

each boy. Not only is it also a key platform in developing the 21st

Century Competencies, it is also the place where many boys make

friends for life.

Objectives of CCA

CCA provides for:

Learning and application of moral values

Acquisition and practice of soft skills

Social integration -shared and common experiences for children from different backgrounds and ethnic groups

A safe learning environment where consequences and failure/mistakes are a learning experience

Opportunities for character and leadership development

Lifelong pursuit of interests and greater freedom of outward expression

Timeframe for CCA Work-year 2015-2016

In 2015, CCAs will commence in July 2015 and run till June 2016. This

will allow for better scheduling of our CCAs, which typically feature

major competitions in the first semester, and an off-season period in

the second semester. Through this arrangement, the school seeks to

better cater to the developmental needs of the pupils in our CCA, as

well as better strategize our CCA recruitment and training efforts, to

bring about better results in our CCAs.

From 2016, CCA selection will take place in March 2016 for the

following CCA work-year (July 2016 to June 2017).

Robotics Selection

Robotics is a school CCA. However, due to the small intake of 20 Primary-two (P2) pupils, we will only enrol P2 pupils via the Robotics P2 CCA Selection Exercise. More details of this selection exercise will be made known to P2 pupils via written letter. Please note that all P2 pupils must first choose a CCA in MConline;

the school will allocate each P2 pupil a CCA of his choice should he

not be selected for Robotics.

CCA Selection Exercise via MConline

Please complete the CCA selection on MConline by 25 April 2015 and

select 3 CCAs.

BE SURE: Please consider carefully; once you have submitted your

choice, you cannot edit nor re-submit.

SUBMIT BY THE DEADLINE: As your CCA selection will enable the

school to make decisions on budgeting, procurement for coaching

services, staff deployment and other logistical arrangements, please

make your CCA selection by the deadline. The school will not be able

to accommodate late requests past the deadline.

NIL RETURN IS REQUIRED: If you do not wish to take up CCA, please

indicate “I am not taking CCA” in MConline.

Boys who wish to continue in this year’s CCA must also log-in to select

the CCA.

Special Mention for Band, Choir and Dance CCAs

In 2016, the Band, Choir and Dance will be preparing for the

Singapore Youth Festival (SYF). The school would like to appeal for

boys who have the inclination and talent for singing, dancing and

playing instruments, to enroll in these 3 CCAs. The journey to the SYF

promises to be an enriching experience and we hope that more boys

can come along on this journey, and stand to be counted for their

school in this exciting undertaking.

The Band, Choir and Dance CCAs have performed consistently and

exceptionally well in previous years; you may read more about their

achievements in the following sections.

Badminton

Badminton is a very popular sport and is played by a very wide age

group. It requires a minimum of two players and the equipment

needed is affordable and lightweight, contributing to its popularity.

Other than in sports halls, badminton courts are painted in

neighbourhoods, making it very accessible and available to those

interested at virtually no cost. So, whether you want to learn to play

leisurely with family and friends, or competitively to represent the

school in competitions, the Badminton CCA welcomes you.

The Objectives of the CCA

Dance

“I do not try to dance better than anyone else.

I only try to dance better than myself.”

Mikhail Baryshnikov

The dance club strives to spark the passion for dance in our many

young talents. With passion, techniques are learnt and great dancers

can be nurtured. As validation, our boys attained distinction in the

2014 SYF Arts Presentation held in April last year. It had indeed been

another great year for the SJI Jr Dance Club.

Under the careful guidance of the teachers-in-charge, their trainer,

Mr Xue Yong Zhi and his team of instructors from Distinct Creative

Arts, we have led the pupils to cultivate a love for rhythmic and

melodic expression, foster a sense of care and concern for one

another and also inspire the dancers to lead a life guided by moral

values.

Let’s rock and roll in 2015, shall we?

Citations by the parents and pupils

"When I recommended Scouts as a CCA to my son Nicholas at Primary 2, he had no idea what scouting is all about. I told him that Scouts is a uniform group that teaches basic scouting skills with activities tailored to teach young boys life and physical skills, leadership and responsibility, self-reliance, adventure and fun as well as citizenship. "Sounds like fun!" he said. So he signed up as a Scout. The lessons were conducted in fun, interactive ways with games either in their sixes or as a whole group. Hikes, outings and camps made him aware of the environment and allow him to practice self-reliance and leadership. Every Arrow and badge he received is a testament to the progress he made as a scout. Now, 3 years later, he has grown not just physically but intellectually, with leadership skills, self-reliance and responsibility. Awareness of his environment and country. I believe Scouting has made him more aware of his ability, strengths and given him some skill sets for his future endeavours!"

- Angelina Ng, Parent of Nicholas Chng Li Kien from 6 Stephen

Scouting to me is not just working on badges, but also having the

heart and soul to help other people. I joined scouts because of my

father forcing me to, but ever since my first year of scouting in 2012,

I had enjoyed attending every single Scout session, even though

trainings are often tiring. It is also very enjoyable to attend camps

and campfires. Scouting also teaches me many life lessons and gives

me a chance to lead others.
