Introduction

Welcome to Mastering Basic Skills. Second grade is the year in elementary school when children begin to make sense of their early academic skills. Most seven- and eight-year-olds are rapidly begining to recognize familiar words, increasing their ability to read new words, and are able to add and subtract with much greater speed. All the new skills learned in first grade are now mastered and have provided the second grader with a strong foundation on which to build more complicated skills.

Second grade is a fun year, filled with growth. You may notice that your child is more relaxed, has a calmer disposition than she had in first grade, and is able to concentrate for longer periods of time. That often overly active first-grade personality has grown into a more independent child who is ready to take on additional responsibilities and who has reasoning capabilities. Second graders are beginning to recognize the value of money and the importance of time. Your child is growing up and is developing a better understanding of herself.

Although you will see much academic and behavioral growth, you may also notice that your second grader experiences times when she lacks confidence, can be self-critical, or may worry more often. Because a child can experience these emotions, she may also prefer not to be singled out in school—even for praise. Once being the center of attention was a great deal of fun—now it can be upsetting and make your child feel self-conscious. Children have better understandings of people and the world, which provides more maturity but also causes more worries.

In the past, your child may have had lots of playmates, but now, true friendships are being developed. Children are learning more about how people get along with each other and the importance of respecting one another.

Children will welcome the fun of practicing and perfecting their second grade skills. Mastering Basic Skills provides children with stories, games, drills, and activi-ties that will enhance and improve their academic skills. Enjoy and participate with your second grader. With an eager learner, it can be a delightful year!
