Shout to the Lord! is designed for parents, home educators, and Sunday school and Christian school educators who want to provide fun, Psalm-based craft projects that teach children about how and why we praise God.

The children will develop a new and richer understanding of the book of Psalms when they learn about God as their Creator and Redeemer while creating such projects as: Praise Prayer Card Holders, Works of Wonder Booklets and Wind Messengers. Children will learn that praise is recognizing, appreciating, and expressing God’s greatness and goodness. Fun suggestions for using the praise crafts at home will encourage children to praise God every day.

Children will learn to praise God for His Word, His laws, and His guidance as they decorate Scripture Praise Cards and a make a decorative pocket in which to hold them.

Materials Needed• 1 plain white 8" paper plate per student• Praise Pocket patterns (page 6)• Colorful card stock or construction paper• Crayons, paint, markers, etc.• Scissors• Glue• Paper hole punch• Two 24–30" pieces of yarn per student • Praise Card patterns (pages 7–9)

Let me speak your praise. You have taught me your demands.

Psalm 119:171

As children decorate the cards, review the Scripture verses and discuss how each verse is a different statement in praise of God’s Word. What are some worthless things that we sometimes give our attention to? How is God’s Word like a light to us?

1. Cut one third of the paper plate off horizontally.

2. Copy and cut out the Praise Pocket patterns (page 6) for each student.

3. Decorate the Praise Pocket patterns with markers, paint, or crayons as desired.

4. Glue the front pattern to the center of the smaller portion of the paper plate. Glue the inside back pattern to the top of the larger portion of the plate. This larger portion will form the back of the pocket.

5. Put both paper plates together, edges touching with the bottoms of the plates facing outward. Glue to hold in place.

6. Paper punch holes around the rounded edge of the front pocket, making sure the punch goes through both plates.

7. Thread one length of yarn through the top hole on one side of the paper plates and tie in a knot.

8. Continue “lacing” up the Praise Pocket by looping thread through each hole on the plates. Tie and cut off the extra yarn after the last hole has been threaded.

9. Punch a hole on both sides of the back of the pocket to create a hanger.

10. Thread the remaining piece of yarn through these top two holes and tie in a bow for hanging.

11. Copy, color, and cut out Praise Card patterns (pages 7–9) and place in the pocket.

Thank You, Lord, for Your laws. They are good for us and give us happy lives. Amen.

Lord, you have made many things. . . .The earth is full of your riches.

Psalm 104:24

Read Psalm 104:4–16 aloud to the children so they understand that God created everything—wind, fire, mountains, water, birds, grass, plants, etc. What is one thing in creation you would like to praise God for?

Thank You, Lord, for the beauty of the earth and for all the things that You created. Amen.

Wind MessengersPsalm 104:4 tells us that the Lord makes the wind His messenger. Children can consider this and other blessings of creation as they make these fun wind socks.

1. Give each child one piece of 12" x 18" construction paper.

2. Fold the paper in half, then in half again.3. Demonstrate how to make small,

decorative cuts on the folds of the paper.4. When finished cutting, open up the paper

and lay face down on a flat surface.5. Cut or tear pieces of tissue paper large

enough to cover each cut opening on the paper.

6. Place the tissue paper over the cut pattern openings. Glue into place.

7. Roll construction paper so ends overlap ½–1". Staple to form a tube.

8. Glue one end of long crepe paper streamers to the inside bottom of the wind sock.

9. Copy the Messenger Medallion pattern (page 11) for each child.

10. Color and cut out. Encourage the children to create their own medallions using the blank circle patterns. Attach the circles to the bottom of the streamers.

11. Cut five 12" pieces of yarn or string for each child.

12. Using a paper hole punch, space five punched holes evenly along the top of the wind sock.

13. Thread one piece of yarn through each hole and tie a knot or tape ends to the inside to hold in place.

14. Gather the five lengths of yarn up and tie together to hang.
