PRESS RELEASE

BALKAN TRAFIK!

1.05.2014 > 04.05.2014 - Centre for Fine Arts

The eighth edition of Balkan Trafik! is bound to be a festive occasion once more, with concerts, films, discussions,

and workshops relating to south-eastern Europe. This year the festival broadens its horizons to include, for

the first time, groups from Ukraine and Poland and will also include special focuses on Roma culture and original

Balkan jazz.

The festival headliners are Mahala Rai Banda, with special guest singer Jony Iliev, along with Turkish icon Selda

Bağcan, the Macedonian gypsy queen Esma Redžepova, the Greek living legend George Dalaras, and an original

show entitled Femmes des Balkans. To make the Balkan experience complete, you can drop in at any hour of

the day or night to the Rembetiko Kafé or the brand new Istanbul Meyhane, a traditional bar in authentic

1920s style!

Lovers of the Greek blues are in for a treat. The Balkan Trafik Festival will be opened by the Greek living legend

George Dalaras. On Thursday 1 May 2014 the Rembetiko Show 2014 comes to the Centre for Fine Arts.

Dalaras will pay an "unplugged" tribute to the rembetiko tradition. For his new tour, he has made a special selec-

tion of a number of traditional songs that he and his ten musicians will perform as authentically as possible. The

Greek instruments (bouzouki, bağlama, oud, and tzouras) will be amplified by microphones only.

On Friday 2 May, the cream of the Balkans will treat you to authentic sounds from the region; they will be joined

by a few cracking Belgian groups influenced by Balkan music, including the Antwerp Gipsy-Ska Orkestra, the

Balkan Trafik Band, and the Ambrassband. In addition to Selda Bağcan, an icon of the Turkish counter-

culture of the 1970s, look out for some musical fireworks from the Serbian band KAL. And we are willing to bet

that you won't be able to sit still once Mahala Rai Banda - made famous by a remix by Balkan god Shantel him-

self - starts playing. For the occasion, the group is joined by a musical friend, Jony Iliev from neighbouring Bul-

garia.

On Saturday 3 May, it will be all power to the women at Balkan Trafik! FEMMES DES BALKANS, featuring the three

Fates in the form of Amira Medunjanin, Biljana Krstić, and Tamara Obrovac, are bringing the Serbian

jazz pianist Bojan Z with them. Together, they will show us just how exciting Balkan music can be. The phenome-

nal voice of gypsy queen Esma Redžepova will be backed by the Amazing Roma brass band from Mace-

donia. The Greek group Imam Baildi was such a success last year that we have invited them back; they will be

joined by the Kristijan Azirovič Orkestar, winners of the Guča Trumpet Festival, and a whole array of musical

stars.

The last day of the festival is dedicated to film with a masterclass Romanian film, an interview with the Roma-

nian director and screenwriter Corneliu Porumboiu and a selection of the artist’s films.

Dalaras. On 1 May, his Rembetiko Show 2014 will be

at the Centre for Fine Arts for an unplugged tribute

to the rebetika (Greek blues) tradition. With more

than 12 million record sales to his name, the popular

In the setting of a 1950s cabaret, Fanouris Trikilis captivates his audience as they soak in the atmos-phere of a rebetika cafe in which audience and art-ists together form a cinematic tableau vivant. Born in Charleroi, Trikilis started dancing while still young and soon set up his own dance group, which appeals to people of all ages and backgrounds. His dance shows respect for tradition, while also looking to the future.

FRIDAY 02.05.2014

HENRY LE BŒUF HALL

Kolo Professional Dance Ensemble

(R S)

Henry Le Bœuf Hall - 18 :00

The Kolo national dance ensemble was established in

1948 by the Serbian Republic, with the aim of keeping

traditional dances alive in an authentic, artistic way. As

an ambassador of traditional Serbian art, the company

developed into a celebrated ensemble presenting strik-

ing dances, music, costumes, and traditional instru-

ments. Step inside true Serbian culture and let yourself

by surprised by folk dances of real character!

Selda Bağcan (TR)

Henry Le Boeuf Hall - 20:00

The Turkish singer Selda Bağcan is a true icon of 1970s

counterculture. Her committed protest music led the

then Turkish authorities to imprison her for some

years in the 1980s, but the fame of her revolutionary

Anatolian folk-rock, with its electronic and rock 'n' roll

influences, continued to spread. She has been a role

model for artists all over the world, including Antony

and the Johnsons, Klaxons, and Florence and the Ma-

chine, who recognise in her a legendary singer with an

incredible voice that can touch listeners to the depths

of their souls.

Mahala Raï Banda & Jony Iliev (RO |

BG) Henry Le Boeuf Hall – 22:45

The eleven-strong Gyp-

sy-funk band Mahala Rai

Banda has set venues

alight worldwide. Their

stirring music comes

straight from Bucharest's

Gypsy quarters and

blends edgy brass with

raw violin and melodic

accordion sounds. The

band performs dance

numbers rooted in tradi-

tion but with added

touches of dub, soul, and

characteristically Arab sounds. You almost certainly

know their 2007 summer hit, Mahalageasca, an infec-

tious remix of the Balkan god Shantel. Try standing

still – impossible!

HORTA HALL

Antwerp Gipsy-Ska Orkestra (BE)

Horta Hall - 19:15

Innovation and authenticity are the keywords when it

comes to describing the work of these globetrotters,

who serve up a unique mix of fiery Gypsy music and

bouncy ska, combined with riotous wind instruments

and synthesisers. Their second CD, Lumia Mo Kher

("The World is My Home") bursts with ebullient en-

ergy, ambition, and boisterousness. These talented

musicians have a powerful live reputation, which has

already won them an invitation to the renowned Sziget

Festival in Budapest.

Kolektif Istanbul (TR) Horta Hall – 21:45

Kolektif Istanbul came into being when musicians from

a variety of backgrounds met up in Istanbul. Village

musicians, used to playing at parties and wedding

ceremonies in their homelands, joined forces with

musicians who love to improvise as they explore mod-

ern styles – all in the "colours" of Istanbul. Together,

they create a musical dialogue between Anatolia and

the Balkans. While showing great respect for tradition,

Kolektif Istanbul gives original melodies a funky and

jazzy touch.

Balkan Trafik Orkestra (BE | MK)

Horta Hall – 00:00

The young Macedonian trumpet virtuoso Seven

Kadrievi was only twelve when he started playing in his

father's ensemble, the Orkestra Braka Kadrievi – the

ensemble that inspired the music for Kusturica's

groundbreaking film Time of the Gypsies. Earlier this

year, specially for the festival, he founded the Balkan

Trafik Orkestra. He has brought together musicians

with roots in Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Romania; to-

gether, they play authentic Balkan music with a dash of

gypsy soul.

KAL (RS) Horta Hall – 01:15

The young Serbian

band KAL proves that a

combination of tradi-

tional Balkan blues and

dance beats, with an

added dash of rock 'n'

roll, is a recipe that

works. Rooted in Gypsy

tradition and numbered

among the "Rom activ-

ists" of the 20th century,

they exude pride and

ethnic togetherness.

The band is forward-looking, but embraces at the same

time the thousand-year-old lungo drom (long road), an

attitude to life that resolutely stands its ground in to-

day's constantly changing "Nu-Europe". A group in

that aims to make a difference in this postmodern age.

Ambrassband (BE)

Horta Hall – 02:45

Ambrassband is a twelve-strong international combo

that has been on the go for more than twelve years,

performing in streets, on squares, on stages, in cafes,

and at wedding parties, both at home and abroad. Its

musicians learned how to create their authentic sound

by hanging around with a real Gypsy wind band; this

led them to develop a surprising mix of Balkan,

klezmer, and compositions of their own, which has

audiences eating out of their hands in no time.

Ambrassband is equally at home in acoustic parades

and in live shows on a big stage. Experience an explo-

sion of brass sounds, Gypsy rhythms, and infectious

melodies.

HALL M

Grigore Leşe (RO) M – 18:30

Grigore Leşe is Romania's most important folk artist,

known for singing with the "horea din grumaz", an

extraordinary vocal technique that translates as "sing-

ing from the throat". Not only is Leşe a star in his

homeland: he has also won fame abroad and has repre-

sented Romanian music at many international festi-

vals.

Jonianet & Saze (AL) M –21:00

The Jonianet Albanian vocal ensemble performs a kind

of traditional iso-polyphony that is characteristic of the

south-west of their country. The group aims to keep

alive the emotional and spiritual wealth of this art form

and to communicate it as a record of an age-old cul-

ture. Their repertoire includes epic-historical songs,

love songs, and folk music with lyrics by contemporary

local poets. For this eagerly-awaited performance, they

are joined by Saze, an ensemble that specialises in

instrumental, traditional wedding music from the

Greek-Albanian border region.

REMBETIKO KAFE

Fanouris Trikilis Rembetiko Project

(GR | BE)

Ter Arken 1 – 20:30, 22:30 and 00:00

In the setting of a 1950s cabaret, Fanouris Trikilis

captivates his audience as they soak in the atmosphere

of a rebetika cafe in which audience and artists togeth-

er form a cinematic tableau vivant. Born in Charleroi,

Trikilis started dancing while still young and soon set

up his own dance group, which appeals to people of all

ages and backgrounds. His dance shows respect for

tradition, while also looking to the future.

ISTANBUL MEYHANE

Pinar Türker & Fasl-i Chahane (TR |

BE) Ter Arken 2 & 3 – 18:45, 21:00, 23:30 and 01:00

The Turkish singer Pinar Türker has lived in Brussels

for over ten years and is as crazy about music and art

as she is about the city. For her performance at the

Centre for Fine Arts, she is joined by Fasl-i chahane.

Together with its two vocalists and five musicians

(including a violinist, an oud-player, and a quanun-

player), she will present traditional songs from old

Istanbul.

VINO ZIRKUS

Odessalavie (BE) Vino Zirkus, 18:00 & 00:00

Initially, armed with a clarinet and an accordion,

Aurélie Charneux and Silvia Guerra set out to return to

a pure and simple style of klezmer. But their tempera-

ment and their natural curiosity got the better of them

and they came to flavour their klezmer with other in-

fluences. The result: inspired, distinctive music, at

times passionate, at times subtle.

Bulgarian Folkdance of Shiroka Luka

(BG) Vino Zirkus – 19:30

Over the last 40 years and more, the little village of

Shiroka Lukka in southern Bulgaria has become fa-

mous for its school specialising in the country's tradi-

tional songs, instruments, and dances, which are

taught by teachers trained in Bulgaria's leading musi-

cal institutions. Its students present concerts around

the world, both in Europe and North America, often in

association with eminent Bulgarian composers, sing-

ers, and musicians. Balkan Trafik offers you an oppor-

tunity to discover the beauty of Bulgarian folk tradi-

tions in their company.

Ensemble of Folk Songs and Dances of

Albania (AL) Vino Zirkus – 21:45

The Ensemble of Folk Songs and Dances of Albania,

one of the oldest national performing groups still active

today, is made up of a number of soloists, groups, and

musicians. Albania has a rich cultural heritage that is

characterised by great diversity: each region has its

own distinctive costume, music, dances, and rituals. In

its colourful, authentic costumes, this ensemble cele-

brates the cultural traditions of the Albanian people

with original music and dancing by outstanding artists.

DJ Click ft. Tziganiada (FR | RO)

Vino Zirkus – 00 :45

Whether on his own or accompanied by musicians, DJ

Click captivates all-comers with his compelling per-

formances. He explores the riches of a variety of cul-

tures, combines them, and does his own thing with

them until he gets everyone up dancing. Here he will

be joined by Tziganiada, Romanian multi-

instrumentalists from Gypsy families for whom the

music of their region holds no secrets. Together, they

present their take on traditional genres such as hora

and sirba, combined with a dash of electronica.

the Guča Trumpet Festival, and a whole array of

musical stars.

Esma Redžepova & Amazing Roma

(MK) Henry le Boeufzaal – 00:00

Esma Redžepova is

known as "the Gypsy

queen of Macedonia".

When it comes to

music, she recognises

no borders: one mo-

ment she seems to be

Greek; soon after-

wards, she could just

as easily be of Turk-

ish, Jewish, or Bulgar-

ian origin. Her phe-

nomenal voice has

captivated audiences

all over the world. At North Sea Jazz, she and her

Amazing Roma set the place alight.

This Polish-Ukrainian Gypsy-fusion band, founded

in 2005 and led by the singer and violinist Maria

Natanson, combines Gypsy music with acoustic

music and jazz-tinged melodies. Inspired by older

compositions from the Balkans and the Carpathians,

Čači Vorba immerses audiences in an unconven-

tional ambience of Romanian rock 'n' roll, Balkan

twist, Roma swing, and Eastern melodies, as it cre-

ates its own dynamic joc 'n' roll (joc means "play" in

Romanian). A refreshing take on Gypsy music!

Shutka Roma Rap (MK) Horta Hall – 20:00

Since the early 1990s, young people from Europe's

Roma communities have created a new noncon-

formist identity by integrating hip-hop culture into

their own environment. One of the hotbeds of this

development is Shutka, a suburb of Skopje that is

the largest Roma settlement in the world. Shutka

Roma Rap is a powerful hip-hop crew that has been

influenced by both Eastern and Western music.

They rhyme in Romani and rap about Roma life,

politics, God, women, poverty, and fame.

DakhaBrakha (UA)

Horta Hall – 23:00

Alongside a man in black with a superb counter-

tenor voice, the DakhaBrakha company from

Ukraine is made up of three young women in tradi-

tional Ukrainian white dresses and imposing hair-

dos. Their unique style combines the best of Ukrain-

ian folk traditions with African, Arab, Bulgarian,

and Hungarian rhythms and sounds. The result is

eclectic world music that takes the listener into a

dream world. They stunned the audience at last

year's Roskilde festival in Denmark.

Imam Baildi (GR)

Horta Hall – 01:00

The Falireas brothers from Greece, a drummer-

percussionist and a DJ-arranger, combine the

unique sound of rebetika, the early-20th-century

Greek blues, with influences from all over Europe.

They create a unique sound by incorporating pro-

grammed beats into authentic recordings from the

1940s and 1950s. The bouzouki meets swing-electro

and traditional Greek music is mixed with hip hop

and mambo. Add a rapper, a female singer, and

some genuine Balkan ambience and you get the

infectious electro-pop of Imam Baildi!

Kristijan Azirović Orkestar (RS,

Winner Guča Trumpet Festival 2013) Horta Hall – 02:30

The Serbian group Kristijan Azirović Orkestar was

founded in 2005. With a whole arsenal of brass and

percussion instruments, it takes you into the world

of Bulgarian folklore. In 2013 they won the prestig-

event with an international reputation.

The women of Bistritsa Babi ("the grandmothers of

Bistritsa") from the Shoplouk region of Bulgaria are

the last representatives of traditional polyphony, a

unique culture that predates the Christian era and

has survived down the centuries in the village of

Bistritsa. Their tradition encompasses shoppe mu-

sic, the horo folk dance, and the lazarouvane (a

ritual initiation ceremony for young women). The

group was recognised by UNESCO in 2005 as Intan-

gible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

(GR | BG) M – 19:00 & 00:15

This new project led by the famous trumpeter

Pantelis Stoikos performs arrangements of Balkan

and Gypsy music from Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania,

Greece, and Turkey. Stoikos himself, Kyriakos

Tapakis, and Loukas Metaxas make up the Balarom

Trio, which gives jazz standards, maqam fusion, and

compositions of their own a Balkan twist. Stoikos is

regarded as one of the most creative trumpeters of

today's Balkan jazz scene. The trio will be joined by a

special guest, the talented kaval-player Nedyalko

Nedyalkov, who is a soloist with the Folk Orchestra

of Bulgaria's National Radio, has worked on a Jordi

Savall project, and has also played with Aka Moon.

Félix Lajkó-Antal Brasnyo duo (HU) M – 22:15

The Hungarian violinist Félix Lajkó developed a

keen interest in folk and Gypsy music at a very early

age, but influences from jazz and classical music can

also be heard in his music. He performs both solo

and with a backing band. He has worked with the

French cult group Noir Désir (on their track Ernes-

tine), among others. For this concert he is bringing

with him the viola-player Antal Brasnyo, with whom

he has recorded a number of albums.

music, at times passionate, at times subtle.

Kolo Professional Dance Ensemble

(R S)

Vino Zirkus – 19:45

The Kolo national dance ensemble was established

in 1948 by the Serbian Republic, with the aim of

keeping traditional dances alive in an authentic,

artistic way. As an ambassador of traditional Ser-

bian art, the company developed into a celebrated

ensemble presenting striking dances, music, cos-

tumes, and traditional instruments.

Ensemble of Folk Songs and Dances

of Albania (AL) Vino Zirkus – 20:30

The Ensemble of Folk Songs and Dances of Albania,

one of the oldest national performing groups still

active today, is made up of a number of soloists,

groups, and musicians. Albania has a rich cultural

heritage that is characterised by great diversity: each

region has its own distinctive costume, music, danc-

es, and rituals. In its colourful, authentic costumes,

this ensemble celebrates the cultural traditions of

the Albanian people with original music and superb

dancing by outstanding artists.

Bulgarian Folkdance of Shiroka Lu-

ka (BG) Vino Zirkus - 22:15

Over the last 40 years and more, the little village of

Shiroka Lukka in southern Bulgaria has become

famous for its school specialising in the country's

traditional songs, instruments, and dances, which

are taught by teachers trained in Bulgaria's leading

musical institutions. Its students present concerts

around the world, both in Europe and North Ameri-

ca, often in association with eminent Bulgarian

composers, singers, and musicians.

DJ Click ft. Tziganiada (FR | RO)

Vino Zirkus – 01:15

Whether on his own or accompanied by musicians,

DJ Click captivates all-comers with his compelling

performances. He explores the riches of a variety of

cultures, combines them, and does his own thing

with them until he gets everyone up dancing. Here

he will be joined by Tziganiada, Romanian multi-

instrumentalists from Gypsy families for whom the

music of their region holds no secrets. Together,

they present their take on traditional genres such as

hora and sirba, combined with a dash of electronica.

SUNDAY 04.05.2014

The closing day of Balkan Trafik is all about film.

There will be a master class in Romanian cinema

with Dominique Nasta, a professor of film studies;

her book Contemporary Romanian Cinema: The

History of an Unexpected Miracle will be launched

on the same occasion. There will also be a conversa-

tion with the acclaimed Romanian director and

screenwriter Corneliu Porumboiu about his film

career and see a selection of his films.

Masterclass by Dominique Nasta:

Romanian new wave and European

cinema: friends of long standing ? Studio – 14:00 – Language : FR

Dominique Nasta is Professor of Film Studies at the

Université Libre de Bruxelles. She has published two

books, Meaning in Film (1991) and New Perspec-

tives in Sound Studies (with Didier Huvelle, 2004),

as well as numerous essays and encyclopedia chap-

ters on Romanian films and directors.

Book Launch Contemporary Roma-

nian Cinema : The History of An

Unexpected Miracle by Dominque

Nasta Fumoir - 16:00

Over the last decade, audiences worldwide have

become familiar with highly acclaimed films from

the Romanian New Wave such as 4 Months, 3

Weeks and 2 Days (2007), The Death of Mr.

Lazarescu (2005), and 12:08 East of Bucharest

(2006). However, the hundred or so years of Roma-

nian cinema leading to these accomplishments have

been largely overlooked. This book is the first to

provide in-depth analyses of essential works ranging

from the silent period to contemporary productions.

In addition to relevant information on historical and

cultural factors influencing contemporary Romanian

cinema, this volume covers the careers of daring

filmmakers who approached various genres despite

fifty years of Communist censorship. An important

chapter is dedicated to Lucian Pintilie, whose semi-

nal work, Reconstruction (1969), strongly inspired

Romania's 21st-century innovative output. The

book's second half closely examines both the

'minimalist' trend (Cristian Mungiu, Cristi Puiu,

Corneliu Porumboiu, Radu Muntean) and the

younger, but no less inspired, directors who have

chosen to go beyond the 1989 revolution paradigm

by dealing with the complexities of contemporary

Romania.

Screening Liviu’s Dream van/de

Corneliu Porumboiu (2004, 39’) Studio - 17:00 – Subtitles: FR

“Liviu’s Dream” tells the story of a young man who

was born by mistake. That is, to be precise, by the

fault of a communist decree which was forbidding

abortions.

The movie was inspired by a real event. In 1966, in

the communist era, Ceausescu, the former dictator,

gave a decree which was forbidding abortions. Be-

cause of it, many unwanted children were born and

young people were forced to form unhappy families.

Recent statistics show that 4 million young people

were born because of this decree. “Liviu’s Dream” is

the story of such a young man.

Screen Talk Corneliu Porrumboiu Studio – 18:00 – 19:00 –Language : FR

Corneliu Porumboiu was born in 1975 in Vaslui. He

studied film at the I.L.Caragiale University in Bu-

charest and received his degree in 2003. The two

short films he directed that same year drew interna-

tional attention: A Trip to the City (Cinéfondation’s

second prize in 2004), followed by Liviu’s Dream. In

his first feature film, 12:08 East of Bucharest,

Porumboiu offers a very humorous view of Roma-

nia’s 1989 revolution. The film was presented in

Cannes at the Directors’ Fortnight in 2006 and won

the Caméra d’Or. Corneliu Porumboiu carried on

subtly combining his work on cinematic form with a

dissection of the Romanian society in Police, Adjec-

tive, selected for Un Certain Regard in 2009 (Jury

Prize and Fipresci Prize). Porumboiu’s trademark

humour and deconstruction of the real continue in

his film,When Evening Falls on Bucharest or Me-

tabolism, which charts the making of a film through

the romantic/analytic relationship between the

director and lead actress.

Screening PREMIERE Metabolism

by Corneliu Porumboiu

(2013, 89’) M –19:30 – Subtitles : EN

It's the middle of a film shoot and Paul, the director,

is having an affair with Alina, an actress playing a

supporting role. With Alina's last day on set immi-

nent, Paul decides to rewrite the script in order to

shoot a nude scene with her. But tomorrow is always

another day. Paul wakes up in the morning and

decides not to shoot the scene after all. Instead, he

calls the producer and tells her he's having problems

with his ulcer...

Testament to the New Romanian Cinema's contin-

ued interest in exploring the relationships between

reality, cinema, and truth, Porumboiu's directorial

evolution becomes evident in the way he reduces

cinema to its simplest form. Employing an acute

sense of framing and awareness of time, Dumitrache

and Avramut's performances are blended with the

mise en scène, and shot with natural beauty by Tu-

dor Mircea. Dense with meaning in every frame,

When Evening Falls on Bucharest or Metabolism

delivers a thought-provoking rumination on our

engagement with reality through cinema.

DEBATES, HAPPENINGS & WORKSHOPS

Balkan Trafik brings people and cultures closer together. And not just in the passive experiences of looking and

listening: our interactive activities allow you to get involved too. We are amongst others holding debates in which

experts will engage in discussion with each other and the public. In the Vino Zirkus you can learn authentic folk

dances, get up close to musicians in a series of mini-concerts, and wash down your emotions with a regional wine.

Outside, in the Balkan Bazaar, there will be a real street barbecue, a caravan with Roma art, and lively out-

breaks of singing and dancing.

Roma Music and the Roma Image: an unfair match? 03.05.2014 – 16:00 > 17:30 - Studio

In recent years thousands of Roma have emigrated from Eastern to Western Europe and Europe's newspapers and

televisions are ablaze with yet more stories reinforcing stereotypes about the Roma people. At the same time,

Balkan music has become increasingly popular leading to a large commercialisation of Romani music whilst con-

veying other stereotypes. What effect does this have on the image we have of the Roma community? Biser Alekov

from the European Roma Grassroots Organization Network will moderate this debate. He will be speaking to

ethnography professor Ioana Szeman, Dragan Ristic - leader of the ‘Rock’n Roma’ group KAL, and other guests.

Workshop iso-polyfonie

03.05.2014 - 14:30 > 15:30 - Rembetiko Kafe

The iso-polyphonic tradition lives on in southern Albania today. You can hear this part-singing while the inhabit-

ants of this mountainous region are working or taking part in family gatherings and a wide range of special occa-

sions. UNESCO has recognised this folk tradition as part of humanity's heritage. At BOZAR, not only can you hear

iso-polyphonic singing, but you will even be able to join in. At a workshop you can learn more about this Albanian

tradition, sing along – and maybe even try a few steps of a traditional dance.
