In turn, each object has engineering, process andbusiness data associated with it called aspectswhich make the object instantly recognizable toplantwide information networks. Some aspects, are functional (configuration data, range, capacity, speed, output, etc.), while othersprovide an object’s asset management profile(productivity, purchase and cost of ownershipinformation, maintenance records, mechanicaldrawings, etc.).

Intuitive navigation

Pulldown menus in a Microsoft Windows-based environment provide a list of availableaspects. Users can maintain their view of theprocess while navigating to aspects – all froma unified user interface; simplifying operationswhile making information readily accessible.

• Unified user interface supports user-definable Menus and Tool Bars to ensurenavigational efficiency

• Alarm Bars and Lists make it easy to accessevent/alarm management. Alarms aredisplayed in the order of occurrence

• User-created process graphics take fulladvantage of ActiveX capabilities. Includeslibrary of standard objects such as valves and reactors

• Real-time trending allows users to focus attention where it is most needed.Historical trending accessed by user-definedtime frames

• Set of connectivity libraries connecting any supported ABB system with OperateIT

provides a tight coupling of controllers withthe unified user interface

Letting you do more and do it better

ABB’s true distributed client-serverarchitecture gives users access to all residentserver displays and applications depending on their user access rights. In addition, thispowerful web-enabled environment enhancesunderstanding and decision-makingcapabilities through audio, live video andother data capture formats.

The personalized approach

Operator displays can be customizedaccording to each user’s preferences andaccess authority. OperateIT automatically usesthese preferences to set all event/alarm filtersand display settings to create a familiar andsecure virtual workplace.

Standards-based and scaleable solutions

Adherence to standard technologies such as Microsoft Windows, ActiveX, InternetExplorer, OPC (OLE for Process Control) and others enable third-party cross-platformdata exchange among different applicationsand OperateIT. Efficient application interfacesand solutions reduce plant integration costswithout the need for highly-specializedengineering or programming skills. Inaddition, scaleable architecture lets you add to your system over time as your productionand information requirements evolve.

Superior engineering efficiency

Once objects are designed, they’re stored inlibraries to facilitate repeated usage; leveragingyour investment in knowledge and valuecreation. In addition, views can be organizedby location, function and type to make it easyto select, view, and configure objects.

Evolution through enhancements

OperateIT is designed to co-exist in systemsthat already make use of other ABB HumanSystem Interfaces, while easily integratingwith existing and new controller products.Connections can be made to multiple ABBsystems, as well as other systems with OPC.Users have the power and flexibility to viewall relevant control data from differentsystems via process graphics and otherdisplays. As a result, operator response isdramatically improved, thanks to consistentnavigation techniques and alarm handling, regardless of system source.

AC 800M is a modular, energy efficient andscaleable industrial controller belongingto ABB’s AC 800 family. It is configuredand programmed with Control Builder M,a fully Windows 2000-integrated applica-tion.

The controller is very capable and well suitedto a wide range of applications. From basiclogic to advanced regulatory control or anymix between these two. From only a handfulof I/O points to thousands of them, installedlocally or remotely. It is communicative too bysupporting Ethernet, Profibus DP and severalRS 232C protocols.

The unit mounts on a DIN rail and interfacesdirectly to ABB’s S800 I/O system, electrically,fiber-optically and by Profibus DP. Thanks to

AC 800M is a capable industrial process controller which, thanks to its modularity, is well suited to a wide range ofapplications. From basic logic to advanced regulatorycontrol or any mix between the two. From only a handfulof I/O points to thousands of them.

this modularity and scaleability, AC 800M is afeasible proposition for a wide range ofindustrial control applications, small or large, logic or loops, centralized or distributed.

A feature, common to all AC 800M modules, islow power consumption, which all but elimi-nates the cooling problem and facilitatescompact installation. In the vast majority ofcases, AC 800M controllers can be installed insealed enclosures without fans, louvres, airfilters or similar arrangements. Thereby, anumber of potential trouble factors are elimi-nated, which contributes to the high reliabilityof the controller.

Hardware

AC 800M consists of modules to be installedon DIN rails. Each module consists of adetachable unit and a base that are screwedtogether. The base carries all “external”connections, to/from the module, e.g. powersupply as well as process and communicationsignals.

The heart of the controller is the centralprocessor module and its base. It is equippedwith two IEEE802.3 Ethernet ports by which itcan be connected to a Control Network, asupervisory control system and/or to theControl Builder M programming tool.

It is also equipped with two RS 232C portsoffering an alternative way of connecting theControl Builder and the capability to connectto supervisory systems and dedicated controlsubsystems on the basis of a number of well-known protocols. Also user-defined protocolsmay be developed and used.

One of these ports is intended for short-rangecommunication, e.g. with the programmingtool. Therefore it only offers a subset of the RS232C signals. The other is intended for long-range communication, which is why it offersthe full set of RS 232C signals e.g. for modemcontrol.

On the left-hand side of the module there is asocket for the Communications Expansion(CEX) bus. Communication modules forProfibus DP and RS 232C are available. Up tosix communication modules can be connected.

Vast I/O expandability

On the right-hand side of the processor thereis a connector for the S800 I/O electricalmodule bus to which it is possible to connectup to twelve S800 I/O modules, providing upto 192 S800 I/O points. This kind of basic I/O

The heart of the AC 800M is the central processor module. It is equipped with the industry-standard interfacesrequired to make it expandable in all directions in amultitude of ways.

cluster can be distributed over two DIN railsby a bus extension cable.

The next step in the process of I/O expansionmight be using the on-board optical modulebus connector. To this bus, a further sevenS800 I/O clusters can be connected.

If even further I/O expansion is required theneven more I/O clusters can be installed at aneven greater distance away, communicatingwith the parent controller over Profibus DPfield buses. In this way a single AC 800M canmanage thousands of I/O.

The processor module is equipped withbattery backed-up RAM to protect againstpower failures for a month or so. If longerback-up time is required an external batteryback-up module can be installed, extendingthis time to 18 months or more.

LEDs on the cover indicate Power, Run, Error,Battery OK and Transmitting/Receiving Datafor all on-board communication ports. There isalso a Reset push-button.

PROFIBUS-DP communicationmodule

The Profibus DP interface offers one such busport. The module communicates with its host(processor) module over the CEX bus.

The Profibus module of AC 800M serves as busmaster and handles cyclic reads and writesfrom/to the slaves on the bus. The cycle timedepends on the baud rate and the number ofslaves attached.

When using repeaters, a maximum of 124nodes can be connected to one bus, althoughthe maximum number of nodes per segment is32.

The maximum cable length is 100 – 1200 m,depending on baud rate.

Available soon : FOUNDATION Fieldbuscommunication module

This interface module will provide the abilityto connect Foundation Fieldbus-compatibledevices at the standard speed of 31.25 kbits/sover a maximum cable length 200 to 1200meters, depending on cable type. The modulewill serve as bus master.

RS 232C communication module

The RS 232C communication module of AC800M offers two additional RS 232C ports withRJ45 sockets, both with full modem support.

The transmission speed is selectable from 75 to19200 Baud.

Power supply units

Currently there are three power supply units inthe AC 800M product family: SD821, SD822and SD823. All three are of the switching type, converting mains a.c. voltage to regulated 24 Vd.c. The three converters are rated 2.5, 5 and10 A d.c.. The input voltage is switch-select-able 155 / 230 V a.c..

The soft start function of the convertersreduces inrush currents and bridges powerinterruptions, which reduce the risk of undesir-able trips.

All three supply units can be used in non-redundant and redundant applications. Avoting unit, SS822, is available for controllingthe power supply in redundant configurations.

External battery module

The battery unit is intended as an externalenergy source for longer back-up of the AC800M controller than provided for as standard. The unit is delivered with a special 2 m longcable for connection to the processor module.

The compact termination base (left) saves space andallows for maximum I/O density, the extended base(right) facilitates direct field-cable termination, thuseliminating the need for external cable marshalling.

S800 I/O isalmost completelyconfiguration-free; allyou have to do is toset the fieldbus stationaddress on theswitches provided.

Upright and lateral I/O modules can be mixed andmatched arbitrarily, and subordinated I/O clusters beconnected by electrical or fiber-optic extensioncables.

Installation alternatives to suit eachapplication exactly

S800 I/O is modularly designed, consisting ofpassive termination bases mounted side byside on standard DIN rails. These bases extendthe internal communication bus incrementally

in space savings with maximum I/O channelsper rail, the latter in more room for cabletermination. Extended termination basesprovide fuses and terminals for field powerdistribution, eliminating the need for externalcable marshalling in the majority of cases.

Compact and extended termination bases cancoexist in the same I/O station, meaning thatthey can be mixed and matched to meet theneeds for termination of each field device. I.e.maximum installation flexibility.

The space and environmental protectionrequirements are modest, making S800 I/Oideal for distributed out-front installation formaximum cost savings.

Little need for external signalconditioning

Digital process interfacing modules typicallyprovide 16 channels while analog modulesoffer 8. Since an S800 I/O station can accom-modate 12 I/O modules, this means up to 192digitals or 96 analogs per station or any mixbetween the two extremes. With optionalModuleBus expansion, up to 24 I/O modulescan be accommodated, thus doubling theabove-mentioned I/O capacity.

The I/O modules of a station can all bemounted on a single rail or be distributed

across several, in the latter case using plug-in interconnecting cables.

and provide connection terminals for all in-and outgoing cables. Process I/O modules thenplug onto these bases, providing the interfac-ing required to the field.

There are also all-in-one modules available –called S800L I/O – where the base and theactual I/O module are combined into asingle indivisible unit. In this case, theprocess cabling is terminated on detach-able screw-terminal blocks. This sub-family is a more cost-effective solutionin less demanding applications.

For regular process I/O modules thereare two types of termination bases, one Compact, for upright moduleinstallation, and one Extended, forlateral installation. The former results

Hardware keys ensurethat only the right type ofmodule can be pluggedonto each base.

These alternatives make S800 I/O fit a widerange of standard wall-mounting and floor-standing enclosures. The fiber-opticModuleBus even makes it possible to break upS800 I/O stations into clusters installed hun-dreds of meters apart, i.e., a new, cost-effectiveand noise-immune level of distributed controlbeing made available to the control engineer.

There are inputs and outputs for industry-standard d.c. and a.c. signal levels and devices, including resistance-temperature sensors, thermocouples - even pulse and frequencycounting. So process devices can be wired upto S800 I/O stations with a minimum ofintermediate signal conditioning.

Intra-system communications byindustry-standard field buses

S800 I/O supports both Advant Fieldbus 100and Profibus DP. So it can communicate with awide range of process controllers from ABBand others. Up to 79 I/O stations can beinstalled along a single bus, making such anI/O system capable of managing manythousands of I/O. Both electric and fiber-optic communication media are available.

In connection with Advant Fieldbus 100,S800 I/O also offers full dual redundancy, all the way from the communicationsinterfaces down. This means that all

High data communication security for zeroerrors.

Each output can be set individually to takeon a predefined value or freeze in case ofserious trouble.

I/O modules of the regular S800 I/O rangecan be withdrawn and re-inserted live.Note: does not apply to S800L.

Optional dual redundancy in power supplyand fieldbus communications with bumplesschange-over and failure reporting.

S800 I/O works with a wide range of processcontrollers from ABB and others.

The all-in-one version, S800L I/O, is a more cost-effective solution for less demanding applications.

Introducing the world’s most competitive DC package

ABB has developed a three-leveldrive system package (DCS 400,PowerPack, DC-Direct) to meet thedemands of machine builders.

Our aim is to offer the bestcombination of reliable products atthe most affordable price, backedby on-time delivery, goodpartnership and fast response toenquiries. At the heart of the drivepackage, is DCS 400 – a newgeneration of DC drives, specifically designed to meet theever-changing needs of themachine builders.“Total ease of use” was the briefgiven to the drive’s designers byour customers. The result is a drivethat is:

as easy to handle as an analoguedrive but with all the advantagesof a digital drive.

easy to design into machineequipment, having just the rightnumber of features.

easy to install and set-up, evenby those without special drivesknow-how.

Now see thesmallest drivein its class

ABB has designed a totally new DC drive thatis quite simply, the smallest most competitiveproduct in its class.

PowerPack offers machine builders a totalintegrated package from one supplier. Itcombines the new DCS 400 with ABB’s DCmotors, along with its speed feedback devicesand fieldbus adapters.

The DCS 400s compact design bringssubstantial space savings to machine builders, allowing them to integrate more accessorieswithin the same space.

Existing DC drives are easily replaced withthe DCS 400.

At only 270mm (103/4") wide, and with allpower cables located at the base of theunit, rather than the side, two DCS 400units can be installed side-by-side in thesame 600mm (233/4") cabinet.

The field supply, including the fuse andchoke are integrated into the DCS 400,further adding to its small size andsimplicity of design.

No need for a field voltage adaptationtransformer to match the line supplyvoltage with that of the motor. The DCS 400 uses few components, leading tosmaller size and higher reliability.

The DCS 400 is the first digital DC drive, which can be commissioned by thosewithout special drives know-how. Butmore importantly, the commissioning andstart-up time is dramatically faster thanother DC drives.

The wizard uses either ABB’scommissioning tool DriveWindow Lightwhich is based on RS232 using a standardplug or the drive’s control panel (seeillustration below).

An alternative to the control panel is ABB’sPC-based program, DriveWindow Light, used for guided on-line commissioningincluding: Parameter setting Reference display and feedback values Trending On-line help files

the fastest drive to commission...

Now considerthe completepackage...

Once motor data and process data havebeen entered, the user is guided throughthe commissioning by using the self-tuningfunctions for armature current, speed, fieldcurrent and flux.

No additional documentation or hardwareis needed to commission the DCS 400,thereby saving time.

Application macros with only a few user-selectable parameters, makes thecommissioning of specific applicationseasier, compared to the several hundredparameters associated with other DCdrives.
