“Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.” This refrain signals the beginning of Lent. Lent is the 40-day season of prepa- ration for Easter. It is a penitential time of the year—meaning that each Chris- tian takes inventory of his or her life, remembering that we are sinners before a holy God. This year we can observe the effects of sin, not only in our own lives, but in our society and the world. A global financial crisis continues to affect us. It is the result of unregulated greed. American soldiers are in dan- ger far from home in places like Korea, Afghanistan, and Iraq. We read regu- larly about scandals involving political leaders, Hollywood superstars, and sports personalities. All of this is evidence of the fact that we are people in need of a Savior. Lent is a time to remember that our Father God sent His Son to meet this need. Lent began on Ash Wednesday, February 25 th , and will conclude on April 11 th , the Saturday before Easter. The 40 days do not include the Sundays since every Sunday is considered a “mini-Easter”, celebrating the joy of the Resur- rection of Christ. In addition, each Wednesday during Lent, a special worship service is scheduled at 7:30 pm. Dinner will be served beginning at 6:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall before the Wednesday Lenten Services. Two Lenten Wednesdays will highlight music—the Tennessee Tech College Choir on March 11 th , and an Organ Concert by Organist Jim Moon on March 25 th . The three remaining Wednesdays will focus on three difficult faith questions: March 4 th Why did Jesus have to die? -- Pastor Wiechmann March 2009 Sunday Mornings Children and Youth Sunday School— 9:30—10:30 am Bible Classes For Adults— 9:30 am: Galatians—Pastor Wiechmann. WHY DO WE CELEBRATE A SEDER DINNER? Our Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday, April 5th, as we remember Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. In order to understand the significance of Palm Sunday, think about buying every advertisement aired during the Super Bowl and sending the message: “I am here!” This simple act created such fervor in Jerusalem that Jesus’ enemies were afraid to touch him. On the next Thursday, Jesus again slipped into the city. His movements were betrayed by one of his disciples—Judas. Jesus understood what was to come as he tells us: “How fervently I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer” (Luke 22:15). The Passover was the Seder Dinner. This ceremony had been commanded by God and had been an annual event ever since the Exodus from Egypt. Somehow, during the hustle and bustle of that week, Jesus and his disciples found a place to have this dinner. This Passover Dinner was the turning point between his Triumphant Entry and his Death on the Cross. The Passover Din-ner, with all of its symbolism, was used by Jesus to explain His ministry one last time. And, at the end of this dinner, Jesus asked His disciples to "Do this in remembrance of Me.” The early Church took this request seriously. The Seder Dinner became the basis of the Sunday worship service for the next 300 years. If you would like to rediscover the meaning of the Seder and the significance this meal has for our Christian faith, sign up to come to the Chris-tian Seder Dinner on Maundy Thursday, April 9th, at 7:00 pm. This event will take place in the Fellowship Hall. Bring the entire family. This is a perfect opportunity to invite your friends and neighbors to Our Savior’s Way.

Congregational Christian Seder Dinner April 9, 2009 7:00 pm

Everyone is invited to participate, and your friends and neighbors are also welcome!! Watch for sign ups for the meal at church. With a large number of participants anticipated, much help will be needed to prepare and carry out the Seder Dinner. There will a sign up sheet for food preparation for the meal, setting up the fellowship hall, and everyone's favorite, clean-ing up after the service. Please call Beth Anton at 703-470-8821 with any questions.

The Shack: by William P Young Tuesdays at 10:00 am

Over the past year, William P. Young's book The Shack has been a runaway bestseller. The story about redemption in the wake of tragedy has elicited strong reaction. The bulk of The Shack consists of conversations between a beaten-down, middle-aged adult male named Mack(enzie) and three figures who represent the Trinity: a large African American woman named Papa, a Jewish laborer named Jesus, and an ethereal Asian woman named Sarayu (Sanskrit for "wind"). The conversations take place in a remote shack in eastern Oregon, the exact spot of the greatest tragedy in Mack's life. The "great sadness" brought on by this event still blankets Mack's existence when he receives a mysterious invitation to return there. Join Pastor Mann and the Tuesday morning Ladies Bible study in the Conference Room at Church as we discuss this book. Afterwards, if you have time, you are invited to join us for lunch at a nearby restaurant. For March: 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31.

‘Walk to Jerusalem’ A Stewardship Focus for Winter

As a congregation, we have been par-ticipating in a "Walk to Jerusalem". That is a 5,927 mile imaginary journey that has taken us through various northern cities, across the Atlantic and into North Africa to our final destination in the Holy Land. The goal was to reach Jerusalem by Easter, April 12. Due to the excellent physical fitness efforts of OSW’s congregation, we reached our goal after only 6 weeks! Congratulations! All of that hard work and dedication really paid off. We will spend a week or so touring Jerusalem, and then make the trip back home. With warmer weather and pleasant walking conditions approaching, our goal is to make it back home by Easter. Keep setting goals, walking or exercis-ing, and recording your mileage each week. It is not too late to join the jour-ney. Just pick up your passport at church on Sunday and start walking. If you are unable to walk distances, you can exercise at home for 20 minutes (even in a chair) and that will count as one mile. Children and adults are wel-come to participate. Feel free to contact us for more infor-mation: Michelle Scherbenske, 571-333-0251; Karen Gustafson, 571-333-8136; Diane Olsen, 703-729-1228.

Thoughts about Stewardship – Pastor Peterson

The 40 days of Lent remind us of the ultimate purpose of Jesus’ life to serve His Father and to save us from our sins. Jesus was a living sacrifice for us. Stewardship is often thought to be about money, but a steward is a manager of life and all of life’s resources for God’s purposes. St. Paul writes in Ro-mans 12:1: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship.” Here is a stewardship question for your Lenten reflection: If you met God today and He asked you, “What are you doing with your life?” What would you say? Is anyone better off because you passed their way?

Exercise Opportunities for OSWLC Congregation

Member Julie Hayden has offered the opportunities below to build upon our Walk to Jerusalem and our winter emphasis on the stewardship of our bodies,

ABLAZE! MIRACLE SUNDAY March 29, 2009

Ablaze! Miracle Sunday is coming! When the Ablaze! program began, the $6 million mission dollar goal of the Southeastern District of the Lutheran Church seemed unattainable. On Sunday, March 29, 2009, if individuals would make a one time gift of $20.00, multiplied throughout the District membership, we can raise the last $200,000 in a special mission offer-ing ! Together, the congregations of the Southeastern District can reach this goal to support 23 District missions, numerous local circuit missions, and global outreach efforts.

Pastor Brandon Martin is a mission pastor working in the Hispanic community. Your Ablaze! dollars will continue to support this mission. He writes:

“I had visited Sergio and Angélica expecting to talk about soccer. But when I entered, another topic was troubling the minds of this Mexican couple preg-nant with their first child. They were sorting through the truth and lies of super-stitions they grew up with in Mexico. Concerned about their child’s safety, they wanted to know if any of these fears might be true. These doubts are common among Hispanics who grew up in a culture where faith and supersti-tion are difficult to distinguish. They talked about different remedies to ward off evil. Curious, they asked my opinion. The door was flung wide open for me to share that neither special objects nor superstitious practices protect us from the evil of Satan and this world - but we have God himself as our refuge and strength. The God who gave this couple their baby is the same God who gave his own Son to save their child from the powers of evil!”
