POPE FRANCIS ANNOUNCES “SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD” Pope Francis has published an Apostolic Letter, "Aperuit il-lis," with which he establishes the “Third Sunday in Ordi-nary Time” as a day to be devoted to the celebration, study and dissemination of the Word of God." The timing of the document is significant. It was published this past Monday, September 30, 2019.
September 30th is the feast day of Saint Jerome, an ascetic monk who lived in a monastic community in Bethlehem. He was born in about 340 A.D. He singlehandedly translated the Bible into Latin (the version called Vulgate). He is renowned for his extensive study of the Sacred Scriptures. He wrote numerous commentaries on the Bible. He is recognized as one of the four great doctors of the Latin Church. His fa-mous saying is: “Ignoratio Scripturarum ignoratio Christi est,” which means, "Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ." Saint Jerome died in Bethlehem in the year 420 A.D. The title of the document, “Aperuit illis,” is taken from the Gospel of Luke, where Saint Luke describes the appearance of the Risen Lord to two of his disciples on the road to Em-maus, and how “Beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them (‘He opened to them’) what referred to him in all the Scriptures” (Luke 24:27). In the Apostolic Letter, Pope Francis requests all local Churches to find ways to “mark this Sunday with a certain solemnity.” He suggests that the sacred book should be en-throned “in order to focus the attention of the assembly on the normative value of God’s Word.” The Holy Father en-courages pastors to proclaim the word and emphasize the honor that is due the Word of God in their homilies. He said pastors are responsible for explaining sacred scripture in their homilies and helping everyone to understand its message. He further suggests that pastors can give bibles to their church members, to show the importance of sacred scripture, and the need to read it, study it and appreciate it in daily prayer.
The Pope says that the Bible is not meant for a privileged few, but it is for “those who are called to hear its message and to recognize themselves in its words.” According to Pope Fran-cis, the Bible is “the book of the Lord’s people, who, in listen-ing to it, move from dispersion and division towards unity.”
Pope Francis uses the scene of the Risen Lord’s appearance to the disciples at Emmaus to demonstrate what he calls “the unbreakable bond between Sacred Scripture and the Eucharist.” He says that since the Scriptures speak of Christ, “they enable us to believe that his death and resurrection are not myth but history, and are central to the faith of his disciples;” that when the sacraments are introduced and il-luminated by God’s Word, “they become ever more clearly the goal of a process whereby Christ opens our minds and hearts to acknowledge his saving work.”
The Pope also acknowledges “the primordial role of the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures.” He says, “it is the Holy Spirit who makes Sacred Scripture the living word of God, expe-rienced and handed down in the faith of his holy people.” Pope Francis invites us never to take God’s Word for grant-ed, “but instead to let ourselves be nourished by it, in order to acknowledge and live fully our relationship with him and with our brothers and sisters.”
The Pope concludes his Apostolic Letter by defining what he describes as “the great challenge before us in life: to listen to Sacred Scripture and then to practice mercy.” He says “God’s Word has the power to open our eyes and to enable us to renounce a stifling and barren individualism and instead to embark on a new path of sharing and solidarity.” The Letter closes with a reference to Our Lady, who accompanies us "on the journey of welcoming the Word of God," teaching us the joy of those who listen to that Word – and keep it.

Young Vincentians
Coat Drive October 5 & 6, 2019
After the Weekend Masses
The Young Vincentians is having its annual coat drive to benefit people on Long Island. This is an excellent way to help people who are concerned about the basics – food, clothing and shelter. The donations will go to a soup kitchen in Hempstead that we volunteer in and others
will go to churches that serve many of the island’s neediest areas. Please help us to help people in our own community.
We are thankful for your generosity and support.
