PARISH INFORMATION GROUPS
GROUPS
Website: Ascensionchurchnyc.org Facebook: Ascension Church NYC
Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,
Last weekend, parishioners who volunteer at our weekend homeless shelter spoke after
the masses to invite you to participate in the important work of the shelter. One way we
can model Christ’s love is by feeding and sheltering the poor. At Ascension we are
fortunate to be able to partner with Holy Trinity parish, our neighbors at 82nd St., to provide
a hot meal and safe haven for up to 20 men every Saturday and Sunday night. We rely on
20 volunteers each weekend, or 80 per month, as well as a team of behind the scenes
volunteers to offer this ministry. New volunteers are always welcome to join.
There are a variety of ways to become involved in this ministry. Volunteers are needed to
set up the beds and dining room each Saturday and Sunday night, to cook and serve a
nutritious meal, to visit with our guests, and to serve as an overnight host. Volunteers also
provide salads, dessert, and breakfast items. Between 6:30 and 7:30p.m., the men arrive
from our partner social service organizations, Camba and Urban Pathways Olivieri Center.
The volunteers and guests eat a meal together. After dinner the volunteers clean up while
the men socialize, relax, or more often, go right to sleep.
The men who use our shelter are receiving services from Camba or Olivieri and are
screened each week before coming to Ascension. Guests who are sent to Faith-Based
Respite Shelters like ours, are those members of the homeless community who function
independently without extra medical or mental health supervision. The screening process
provides an assurance that our shelter is not challenged by drugs, alcohol, or violence. Our
shelter is a safe place for volunteers and guests alike. Many of the men who come to our
shelter are employed and are in the process of securing a safe place to live. We have a
team of 2-3 volunteers stay the night to serve as hosts or “sleepers”. These overnight
hosts, both men and women, keep things running smoothly. In the morning the hosts set
out a light breakfast. The men are picked up and leave the shelter by 7:00a.m. to start
another day.
Serving as a host or “sleeper” at the shelter is a wonderful opportunity to mirror God's love
to some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Spending time up close with
guests struggling with homelessness allows us to live out the gospel message in a
profound way. Serving as a sleeper is a great opportunity for couples, singles, friends,
parents and teens to spend time together serving others. It is also a great opportunity for
anyone who needs a break from the busyness of life. As an overnight host you may
choose to sleep, but you can also use this time to read, to study, to pray, or simply to
reflect on how God is present in this ministry.Serving as a volunteer at the shelter, like so
much of God’s work, proves to be a blessing to the volunteers as well as the men who are
our guests. Volunteers often report that they receive as much or more than they give as
God’s love is mirrored back from our guests. Preparing and sharing a meal with the
homeless men is an opportunity to live out the gospel message.
While I would encourage everyone to prayerfully reflect to discern if you are called to
volunteer at the shelter, I know this may not be how you are called to serve. You can still
support this ministry. Donations of both money and warm clothing are needed. In the
upcoming winter months we will be collecting socks, hats and gloves, and thermal
underwear for our guests. Most importantly I ask you to pray for the success of the shelter,
and the safety and wellbeing of the homeless men who stay with us each week.
If you would like more information about the shelter ministry, you can contact Chris
O’Donnell at [email protected]. You can sign up to serve at the shelter at: http://bit.ly/
shelter-signup. If you are a student seeking service hours and want to volunteer, contact
Robin Klueber at: [email protected]. If you, or your organization would
like to make donations to the shelter, contact Kelley Lassman at [email protected].
In the meantime, please mark your calendars for a special Bilingual Mass of Consolation to
be celebrated on Saturday, November 4th at 5:30p.m. Then on Friday evening, November
17th, we will have a special celebration in honor of Our Lady of Divine Providence, the
patroness of Puerto Rico. On that evening, we hope to raise awareness (and some
money) for the people of Puerto Rico. More information will be in next week’s bulletin.
Peace, Fatther Kearney
A menudo
semana. ¡Gracias!
Paz,, Padre Kearney
