Special Touches

When we cook we have to do all the little touches

to prepare the food for cooking. For example, I like to

season and coat chicken before baking it. When we

finish cooking or baking something, that’s the time to

do all the special finishing touches, like icing a cake

or garnishing a plate with colorful vegetables.

junior-varsity team which is in its first year since being reintroduced to the Meteor athletic program. All the players enjoyed the game that ended in a 7-7 tie and in an act of true sportsmanship was followed by

the traditional hockey playoff handshake.

Assessor’s Office Again Certifies an Assessment Early;

2015 Finished Before Deadline While Processing Increase in Appeals Berrios Staff’s Early Completion Saves Millions of Dollars for Taxing

Bodies and Helps Ensure Timely Mailing of Property Tax Bills. Cook County Assessor Joseph Berriosannounced today that his office has certified all 2015 assessment values which included the triennial reassess-ment of the City of Chicago. This included 828,308 parcels of Residential and Industrial/Commercial Propertyin the City.

“My office certified the assessment early again this year, guaranteeing other elected officials involved in theproperty tax cycle enough time to finish their work on schedule. This will help ensure that Second-Installmentproperty tax bills will once again be mailed on the statutorily mandated date of July 1st next year,’’ Berrios said.

In all five years since Assessor Berrios took office in 2010, property tax bills have gone out on time. That hadnever occurred in the previous 34 years. On-time or early assessments save school districts and other taxing bod-ies millions of dollars in interest on money borrowed while waiting for property tax revenue.

The Cook County Assessor’s Office (CCAO) has refined the assessment cycle, instituted efficiency measuresand made the appeal process easier and more open. All employees are committed to on-time or earlyperformance, every year.

“We take great pride in eliminating the need for communities to borrow. The millions saved in interest can bebetter spent on services,” Berrios explained. “Our being early has also allowed taxpayers to plan their financeswith a reliable tax bill schedule.”

The early completion of this assessment occurred while CCAO handled a continued increase in properties thatfiled appeals, using the improved process. The agency also conducted more Community Outreach events than inany other year.

Assessor Berrios lauded his employees for the quality of their work. He stressed that his office accomplishedmore with less and that his employees were able to complete the assessment of Cook County’s largest and mostdifficult triennial district while adhering to an accelerated schedule.

“Our staff accomplished more with fewer employees and did so in remarkable time. We are capable and willcontinue to work aggressively in 2016, when we reassess North and Northwest Suburban Cook County,” Berriossaid.

Improvements in Water Treatment, Stormwater

Management in 2015Resource Recovery Initiatives Move Ahead in 2016Ribbon cuttings in 2015 signified major achieve-

ments in water quality improvements and storm watermanagement in a year highlighted by the completionof disinfection and the Thornton Composite Reservoiras well as the opening of public trails and the use ofgreen infrastructure and rain barrels.“This has been an immensely productive year for theMetropolitan Water Reclamation District of GreaterChicago,” said MWRD President MariyanaSpyropoulos. “We completed dozens of projects ontime and on budget, while continuing to serve as aglobal leader in environmental stewardship.”

Among the many projects unveiled in 2015 weretwo of the following.

Since modifying the free rain barrel program in Mayand publicizing it throughout Cook County communi-ties, the MWRD has signed intergovernmental agree-ments with more than 60 communities and non-government organizations and delivered more than25,000 rain barrels at no cost to residents. This popu-lar program will continue in 2016.

Another investment in green infrastructure, theaward-winning Space to Grow program took moreproductive steps in 2015. The Space to Grow programhas now converted six concrete lots across Chicagointo sustainable playgrounds with storm water deten-tion. The partnership will convert 30 more schoolsover the next five years.

On Sept. 26, water professionals from around theglobe converged at Pershing East Magnet School,3200 S. Calumet Ave., Chicago, to construct a greeninfrastructure learning garden as part of the WaterEnvironment Federation's (WEF's) 88th AnnualTechnical Exhibition and Conference.

Also in 2016, the MWRD plans to unveil a newultraviolet disinfection system at its O'Brien WaterReclamation Plant in Skokie.

“Just as our duty to protect our water supply andmanage storm water and flooding issues has expanded,so too has our resource recovery model, where we areworking every day to reduce our carbon footprint andattract renewable resources to promote sustainabilityfor the District and the taxpayers we serve,” saidPresident Spyropoulos.

A Happier Holidayfor Chicago Seniors

It was a Christmas Day celebration with a twist –party goers were Chicagoans aged 70 and older. LittleBrothers – Friends of the Elderly hosted threeChristmas dinners around the city for seniors livingwithout the help of family and friends. It’s a missionthat alleviates isolation and loneliness among 1200 Chi-cagoans each year.

“Spending Christmas Day alone can take the joy outof the holiday,” says Simone Mitchell-Peterson, chiefexecutive officer of Little Brothers. “Every day of theyear, we make sure seniors feel cared for and remem-bered. During the holiday, we’re especially aware ofhow important it is to care for our elderly.” With thehelp of nearly 200 volunteers, the organization hostedthree dinner celebrations for hundreds of elders, one ofwhich was for Spanish-speaking senior citizens. Forhomebound seniors and those living in nursing homes,a fleet of volunteers delivered meals as well as aholiday treat to their doors.

In addition to Christmas Day festivities, LittleBrothers conducts an elder holiday gift drive that gen-erates 1,000 presents each year. Then the gifts aredelivered throughout December by volunteers. “Eldersare like family, many of them have been with our pro-gram for years. It’s a joy to be able to provide a gift toeach one of them,” says Mitchell-Peterson. “They trulyappreciate the gesture, and we appreciate them.”

Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly providesfriendship to seniors in Chicago who are 70 and olderand aging without support from family or friends. Allservices and programs are free to seniors, regardless ofincome. The nonprofit organization has operated inChicago since 1959, and serves approximately 1,200seniors in the city.
