Citrix HDX includes a broad set of technologies that reside across the entire end-to-end delivery system. HDX in the datacenter leverages the processing power and scalability of servers to deliver advanced graphical and multimedia performance, regardless of the capabilities of the endpoint device. HDX on the network incorporates advanced optimization and acceleration capabilities such as the Citrix ICA® virtual delivery protocol and other third-party technologies to deliver a great user experience over any network, including for remote desktop access over high-latency, low-bandwidth environments. HDX at the device leverages the computing capacity of endpoint devices to enhance user experience in the most efficient way possible.

There are eight categories of HDX technologies that work together in concert to provide the best experience for all user scenarios. Each of these eight categories includes a broad range of new and existing technologies that extend throughout the Citrix Delivery Center™ product family.

•  HDX Broadcast ensures reliable, high-performance connectivity over any network. •  HDX Plug-n-Play lets you use peripherals and other local resources with your virtual desktop just as if

everything were running locally. •  HDX MediaStream provides a set of technologies for playing videos and audio recordings. •  HDX RealTime supports softphones, voice chat and unified communications including webcams. •  HDX Mobile optimizes the delivery of Windows apps and desktops to mobile form factor devices, with

features like the pop-keyboard, inertia scrolling and finger-friendly selection lists. •  HDX RichGraphics handles 2D and 3D graphics, including GPU acceleration. •  HDX WAN Optimization with CloudBridge reduces bandwidth requirements to support satellite offices

while optimizing the user experience. •  And the technology that intelligently and dynamically puts it all together is HDX Adaptive Orchestration.

•  In the past, virtualizing design/engineer workstations and line of business, graphics-intensive applications such as CAD/CAM was never seriously considered due to existing technology limitations. Today, by leveraging various recent software virtualization advancements, many organizations have begun to successfully virtualize their high-end graphics apps.

•  In an increasingly global economy, companies are looking to improve time-to-market by securely collaborating and managing design lifecycles with offshore, mobile and remote employees while maintaining secure control over intellectual property. Organizations are seeing desktop virtualization as an enabling technology to accomplish these dual goals. Leveraging XenDesktop with HDX 3D pro for application and workstation virtualization, with its advancements in deep compression to improve utilization of network bandwidth, and the latest XenServer integrations of GPU acceleration technology for virtualized environments from NVIDIA, Citrix is demonstrating a leadership position in addressing this underserved high-end 3D graphics applications segment.

Key Points: There are many business drivers impacting the trend to virtualize high-end graphics applications such as CAD/CAM including: •  The need to leverage a global talent base •  The need to secure product design IP •  The need to extend mobile device access to users viewing, presenting design models •  The need to improve time to market and be more cost efficient

•  HDX 3D Pro is a feature of XenDesktop Enterprise and Platinum editions that enables you to deliver workstations and applications that perform best with a graphics processing unit (GPU) for hardware acceleration, including 3D professional graphics applications based on OpenGL and DirectX.

•  With HDX 3D Pro, you can use XenDesktop to deliver complex interactive graphics over wide area network (WAN) connections with bandwidths as low as 1.5Mbps using various deep compression CPU and GPU techniques.

•  On local area network (LAN) connections, HDX 3D Pro enables you to replace complex and expensive workstations with much simpler user devices, moving the graphics processing into the data center for centralized management.

•  You can use HDX 3D Pro to virtualize, for example, tools for computer-aided design, manufacturing, and engineering (CAD/CAM/CAE), geographical information system (GIS) software, and picture archiving and communication system (PACS) workstations for medical imaging.

CUSTOMER PROFILE •  Since its establishment in 1973, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. (DSME)

has been building ships, offshore plants, drill ships, Floating Production Storage & Offloading (FPSO) units, submarines, and destroyers. DSME is aiming to become the best shipbuilding and marine engineering company in both Korea and around the world. The company is therefore upgrading to the latest shipbuilding technology and developing its skills in advanced offshore platform building and large-scale plant project management, all with the goal of delivering top-quality civilian and military products.

CHALLENGE •  The existing design collaboration server relied on NVIDIA Quadro 6000 GPUs. This solution

efficiently handled the 2D design models used by DSME; however, part of the overall modernization and quality effort included migrating to 3D design models using Aveva Marine. The switch from 2D to 3D overloaded the design collaboration server, causing noticeable performance delays and other system issues when users tried to work with the 3D data.

•  After researching their options, DSME decided to test a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) using NVIDIA GRID K2. A rigorous testing program took place from June to December of 2013. This testing program included verifying compatibility with Aveva Marine, performance tests with multiple concurrent users, graphics resolution, and frame rate. The goal of this extensive testing was to determine the best way to implement the new design collaboration system.

SOLUTION •  In spring of 2014, following extensive testing and vetting, the Textron Leadership Council approved a VDI pilot

deployment using NVIDIA GRID technology with Citrix virtualization and vGPU support at Bell Helicopter. This project received approval for a phased deployment of up to 375 seats. As of January 27, 2015, 88 of those seats are on GRID enhanced VDI, with an additional 34 coming online by the end of the month.

•  The solution is built on IBM/Lenovo NeXtScale nx360 M4 blade servers equipped with both NVIDIA GRID K2 cards for graphics acceleration and local SSDs for faster write caching. Citrix XenServer 6.5 and XenDesktop 7.6 deliver pooled virtual desktops that are defined by user job roles and needed applications in a “like for like” model. For example, if a user’s workstation had 64GB of RAM and a Quadro 5000 GPU, that user’s desktop pool will allocate 64GB of RAM and a K260Q vGPU profile. All data and compute resides in a datacenter located in Fort Worth, Texas, approximately 350 miles away.

IMPACT

•  With the Citrix/NVIDIA GRID VDI deployment, users are seeing model load times 30-50 percent faster than before, and experiencing overall performance that is equal to or better than their previous workstations. Users can now access their applications and data with full performance and display fidelity on laptop computers and mobile devices from any location within the same facility—and even from remote facilities. Some Bell Helicopter facilities reported that users were able to connect from home and keep working during recent snowstorms that made commuting to work difficult or even impossible. This unprecedented level of power and flexibility is greatly improving employee productivity, mobility, and morale. It is also providing a solid foundation for future improvements to Bell Helicopter’s disaster recovery capabilities.

•  From a security standpoint, centralizing data in the datacenter means that end users receive only pixels while the data itself never leaves the datacenter. Going forward, external parties who need access to data will use their own devices accessing the Citrix/NVIDIA VDI environment without actually receiving any of the sensitive 3D model data.

•  Employee reception has been overwhelmingly positive. Those who participated in the initial pilot do not want to return to using workstations, and other employees who are not currently part of the VDI deployment are clamoring
