Technical/Technological Gaps

Lack of flexible, scalable and holistic tools to support decision making processregarding resource and energy efficiency

Lack of simple and integrated tools to assess and optimize resource and energyefficiency, crossing the different environmental and economic operationalaspects

Deficient knowledge to identify the potential use of wastes as resources

(energy, resources, man-power, etc.)

23

3. The H2020 MAESTRI Project ► Challenges

Page 24: Symposium Luso-German Energy JUL 2017 - MAESTRI

“The relevance of Energy Efficiency within Industry 4.0”

Management Gaps

Non-incorporation of sustainability aspects in company strategy andobjectives

Non-implementation of structured management systems targeting resourceconsumption and energy efficiency

Dispersion of process efficiency relevant data and information acrossdifferent departments of the company

Difficulty on the definition of clear and consistent KPIs and their follow-up

24

3. The H2020 MAESTRI Project ► Challenges

Organisational Gaps

Poor means for sharing resources (e.g. plants, energy, water,wastes and recycled materials) through the integration ofmultiple production units of a single company or multiplecompanies on a single industrial production site;

Difficulty to collect and share information about all process flows(resource and energy inputs as well as waste and pollutantoutputs).

3. Final Remarks

37

“Energy efficiency will be an integral part of Industry 4.0.

Networking beyond the boundaries of individual companies is an

essential prerequisite for greater energy flexibility. In the future,

production planning and production control systems will also be

charged with energy management. They will exchange data on

upcoming power requirements. The Smart Factory and the Smart

Grid, i.e., intelligent power grids, will merge.”
