Students will have opportunities to apply theoretical constructs for building a successful online learning experience. It will provide the basic information needed to be knowledgeable distance educators and instructional developers for online learning. A significant amount of coursework will include research on distance learning topics. Students will support the overall course goal by acting as active collaborators in sharing knowledge and skills. Course Objectives: After the completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Synthesize the various educational theories as applied to distance learning. 2. Define distance learning 3. Discuss the emergence of distance teaching in universities and corporate settings 4. Describe research related to learning outcomes in the distance learning environment 5. Course Requirements:

1. Web-based Expository Instruction Module (40%)Using the existing course shell or other LMS the student is required to design, develop, and facilitate an online module of expository instruction on a topic related to distance learning. The module should not be more than or less than one (1) hour of instructional time. Suggested topics but are not limited to, are as follows:o Implementation of a LMS/CMSo Best practices in online learningo Synchronous and asynchronous learning strategieso Student centered activities in the virtual classroomo Self-regulated learning in online courseso Instructional use of blogs, portals, wikis, virtual environmentso Distance learning in elementary and secondary school

programso Constructivist learning in the online environmento Developing critical thinking skills online.Each module maybe built totally or partially using the existing LMS or other tools, using the announcement area, course documents/handouts, a discussion forum or other online collaboration tools, and at least one assessment instrument.

2. Research Paper (30%)Students will conduct 5 literature reviews each on the two assigned topics, and write a 5-page scholarly paper in APA (American Psychological Association) format that adequately synthesizes the major findings of the literature.

3. Reflection Paper (30 %)Write a one-page reflection of each of the modules/readings assigned. Include at least three details of what you learned and how each detail relates to the goals in distance learning.

Course Policies: You will be expected to make heavy use of Internet tools to complete course assignments and access course content.

Each student is expected to have completed the assigned readings and posted a response to the blog on or before the due date. In addition, students are expected to participate in online collaborations based on the session topic. It is expected that students will maintain the highest professional standards in their activities and interaction with other students and the course professor.
