The communication committee coordinates the newsletter and updates the website as needed. As you see, we have begun a new format. The newsletter will now be printed and mailed monthly to all residents by Peel Inc. If you have any suggestions for articles for the newsletter, please send it through the neighborhood e-mail below.

"National Night Out" (NNO) program is held on the first Tuesday in October for Texas residents. It has been extraordinarily successful in promoting involvement in crime and drug prevention activities, strengthening police-community relations, and encouraging neighborhood camaraderie as part of the fight for safer streets. Since 1984, "National Night Out—America's Night Out Against Crime" has grown to involve over 34 million people from more than 10,000 communities.

This is an excellent way to become more acquainted with your neighbors and to let the criminals know that Sydney Harbour will not tolerate crime. In 2013 we had six (6) streets participate - Circular Quay, Camp Cove, Grotto Point, Opera House Row, Obelisk Bay, Harbour Bridge, and Folly Point. If we can help keep crime down, it’s worth a couple hours of our time.

The Christmas holidays will be here before we know it! Last year we had more decorated homes & yards than ever. Sydney Harbour was beautiful. Let’s try to beat that record on December 15th. The 1st place winner will receive a $50 gift card and the 2nd place winner will receive a $25 gift card. Once a house has won a prize, they cannot win again for two (2) years. This is a beautiful neighborhood with wonderful neighbors so let’s build a reputation for beautiful decorations during the holiday season.

Now to all the folks with dogs - Please help keep our neighborhood looking good by PICKING UP after your dog. It's the right thing to do! In thinking about this, if anyone sees a dog owner who doesn't

pick up after their dog, they probably forgot!! You might think about returning the dogs waste to the owner’s front door thereby making it easer for them to dispose of it. Consider this your good deed for the day!!

Winter is a time of protection and preparation for our lawns, turf grass , trees and bushes. All require an additional effort to afford maximum performance and ensure they will survive our unpredictable Houston winters. Five tips for Houston Winter Lawn Maintenance

1. Lower the mowing height of your mower. Removing young, tender growth on the lawn will prevent your lawn from falling victim to winter diseases. Removing this growth will prevent the lawn from drying out when the cold first comes.

2. Give your lawn a final fertilization. It is important to give your lawn a final fertilization before winter sets in. The nutrients will be stored and used by your lawn throughout the winter and beginning of spring. Ratios in fertilizer vary so make sure they are “winter or fall” formulas designed for southern grasses. Good formulas for winter are 18-6-12, 18-12-16, or 10-5-14.

3. Clear your lawn of debris. Removing logs, toys or gardening equipment will prevent the objects from smothering the grass they sit on and reduce the turfs vulnerability to diseases. Brown patch (brown circles in the grass) is prevalent this time of year. Choose a fungicide with Bayleton – Terrachlor- Banner or Benomyl .These are effective against Brown Patch.

4. Aerate your lawn before the first freeze. It will prepare your lawn for fertilizer and nutrients in the spring. It will also decrease the extent that thatch will affect your lawn in the winter. Apply a pre-emergent weed control from late October to early November to control broad leaf and common grasses.

Late winter is also a good time to trim woody trees and shrubs for preparation of new spring growth. Add an additional layer of mulch to protect trees and landscape and water thoroughly before a freeze to protect tender plant roots. To protect plants from freezing temperatures, place a blanket or sheet over the plant then place plastic over the blanket. Do not let the plastic touch the leaves of the plant.

After you have treated your lawn you will want to reward yourself with some beautiful winter color. Some good choices for this area are:

Alyssum – This is a good ground cover that comes in white, rose and lavender. Cut back when it becomes leggy.

Calendula (Pot marigolds) These look like small mums. They are a bright yellow and will lend color to an otherwise drab winter landscape.

Cornflower – Bright blue to dark purple. These small plants look like little buttons.

Dianthus – This a low growing plant that comes in numerous shades of pink. Has a nice spice scent.

Pansies – Come in a variety of colors. They thrive in cold weather and will bloom the entire winter season.

Ornamental Kale – This cabbage plant comes in a variety of colors and shapes (blue, white, lavender, white and shades of green). Makes an interesting display and you can eat it too!

The Events Committee works throughout the year planning special events for the neighborhood. In order for us to continue these events we need volunteers.

Problem is—we’re not getting the volunteers needed for these functions. Please step up and help. If you have children, volunteer to help us so your little ones will have great memories of their neighborhood and enjoy living in Sydney Harbour. The events committee will be meeting next month to start planning for the 2014 events. So be watching for our new list of events.

VOLUNTEERS

Ms. Beverly again held a water aerobics class for Sydney Harbour. The classes were held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for one (1) hour from the time the pool opened in May until it closed in September. We normally had 15 – 25 people participate each day. This gave all of us an opportunity to add to our exercise routine. Hopefully you can join us next year.

Sydney Harbour’s community pool opened May 18. Pool registration was also held along with an Ice Cream Social. Many neighbors came out and had a great time. The pool was opened this year from 10:00 am – 9:00 pm.

Sydney Harbour’s first Hawaiian Luau was held on June 29th. This was an adult only function of which we had a great turnout with between 60-80 people. We ate, drank, gave door prizes, and played games. This was a big success so watch for 2014’s new function.
