With neither of the two sides having triumphed in the competition previously there was to be a new name on the Wessex League Cup this season and in the Christchurch sunshine it was Bemerton that came out on top and in the process denied Poole Town the League and Cup double. After the players and match officials had been introduced to Mr Ray Pride, Director of League Sponsors Sydenhams Ltd, and League Chairman Mr Bob Purkiss, it was Bemerton who posed the first threat on a very good playing surface with a Jack Slade free kick that was cleared with some difficulty. The League Champions replied with a Russell Cook free kick that was wide, a Micky Hubbard effort that was deflected for a corner and Bemerton keeper Grant Porter claimed two crosses before leaving his area to deny the speedy Carl Preston. Both sides were quickly into their stride with Stuart Brown glancing a header wide at one end before a long cross from Bemerton skipper Jack Slade was met by Adam Jones at the far post with Poole keeper Nic Jones saving superbly from his namesake. Preston was finding space on the Poole left but two crosses were too close to Porter before play moved quickly to the other end with Luke Whitley forced to concede a corner from which Nathan Renyard’s shot was just too high. Porter saved bravely at Preston’s feet and Jones matched that by blocking a close range Slade effort before the Wiltshire side broke the deadlock just three minutes before half time. The Poole defence conceded and



failed to clear a corner and Joe SANGER fired high into the net from some twelve yards range to give his side the lead at the break. HT 0-1 The tall Lamin Dibba just beat Renyard to a cross in the six yard box on the restart before the number boards came into play with Poole introducing Kevin Gill and Stuart Gates and Bemerton Nic Eastham in time to see Jamie Rowe cautioned for the first bad challenge of the afternoon. Porter hung on to a free kick that he must have seen late through a crowded area and as per the first half play continued to go from end to end with Slade shooting across the face of goal after neat work by Sanger and the latter missing by inches with a shot on the turn after Paul Lucas’s pass had split the Poole defence. Tommy Killick played his last card with the introduction of Steve Smith and the substitute was quickly in to the action shooting narrowly wide after Taffy Richardson had won a corner before Poole came the closest yet to finding an equaliser. The speedy Preston, who had been a constant source of danger all afternoon, cut inside and saw his shot rebound back off the crossbar with Porter recovering in time to save the acrobatic follow up from Richardson. Sanger broke clear only to be denied by a superb Jones save and referee Parsons, who had a fine match throughout, quelled some frustrations with two cautions before Bemerton made it two with little more than five minutes left on the clock. A corner from the right resulted in a bout of head tennis in the area before EASTHAM met the ball on the volley and Jones was helpless as the ball flew high into the net to cue black and white celebrations along the touchline. Sanger was too high at one end and Gates suffered a similar fate at the other and after Poole had rather wasted a free kick referee Parsons’s final whistle meant the Cup was to be in the Bemerton Boardroom for the next twelve months. After the winning side’s Grant Porter had received the Man of the Match Award for an afternoon of sure and safe handling under pressure Mr Pride presented Poole with their runners up medals before handing the Cup and winners medals to Jack Slade and his black and white shirted team mates who were worthy winners on the day and whose victory capped a fine season for the Club. A most enjoyable afternoon superbly organised as always by Christchurch Football Club and a fitting end to an enjoyable Wessex League season. Paulsgrove: Howitt; Simpson, Callaway; W Bichard, Sizer, Howard; Fitzpatrick, White (sub: Crockford 57), Whittaker, Drackett, Ball.

Notes: It wasn’t a pleasant evening weather-wise with intermittent rain falling throughout, the tree-lined railway side doing its best to provide some kind of shelter. Paulsgrove, who were beaten 2-5 at home to Overton last time out, looked for a better performance and three goals in the first half went a long way to overcome their Southampton visitors (who, of course, are the present day Sholing FC). The teams struggled to adapt to the bumpy surface early on, but it was Grove who took a 19th minute lead, a firm and low effort by Steve Fitzpatrick. They soon added a second goal when, due to a mix up in the Vospers defence, Martin Whittaker took full advantage to score. Vospers got back into it when a harsh penalty was given for handball and Stuart Brown converted from the spot. The first of Darryl White’s two goals either side of the interval came, a low angled shot. White’s second goal, a minute into the second half came due to some hesitant defending and resulted in lunging at the ball before a defender and it crept agonisingly past the diving John Richardson and in off a post. That was the end of the goalscoring as the game faded a bit from there. This was a Thursday evening and the light was swiftly fading too before the ninety minutes were up. Vospers had a couple of late chances including a decent one for Jason Hurst who shot wide but the points were heading Paulsgrove’s way by then.

In 2019/20: Paulsgrove were playing in the Senior Division of the Hampshire Premier League.

One from Gary’s archives when Town met Ryde Sports in a Wessex League match:

Date: 15/09/1994 Wessex League At: Love Lane

PETERSFIELD TOWN (3) 5 RYDE SPORTS (2) 4 Petersfield Town: King; S Longland, Cowie (sub: Woods 88); Parvin, Yates, Bray; Ball, Tindal, Heir, Chambers, Hamlett. Subs (not used): P Longland and Musselwhite. Notes: On a damp evening at Love Lane, this was a most entertaining affair. If all the chances had been taken in this game then it could have finished 8-8!! Ian Hamlett set the goalscoring going, being left unmarked by the Ryde defence to shoot low into the corner with just four minutes played. It was 2-0 before the minutes had ticked into double figures with Ryde keeper Chris Page a shade unlucky as he did well to parry Hamlett’s shot but Kevin Chambers was there to fire home. Ryde rather unexpectedly got a goal back when Lee Dixon’s shot was pushed in by home keeper Lyndon King when it appeared easier to make a catch (but it’s easy from the side lines, isn’t it?). Town soon opened up the two-goal gap again when Chambers was put clear of the Ryde defensive line and finished well. The scoring halted for a while but the rain continued to fall with defenders having difficulty on the wet top. Ryde reduced the deficit again, King being unable to hold a cross and Shaun Flux shot through a crowd of players and in. The score remained 3-2 up to the break. There were further chances in the second half with Petersfield creating most of them including hitting a post. The goals returned in the latter stages with Ryde scoring the next to level the scores. It was a well created goal too as a fine pass down the line by sub Peter Wheeler found Dixon who charged forward and crossed to Andy Sampson to net at the far post. I could see Ryde winning the game at that point, but Town struck back when Chambers scored his third goal after Page failed to hold a Hamlett shot. Undeterred, Ryde levelled it again with a tremendous strike, again by Sampson, who from the angle of the box turned and fired high into the far corner and surely a point for the Islanders now with five minutes to go. But there was a dramatic late winner for Town when Chambers was left a straight-forward opportunity at the far post from a right-wing cross and four for him and five for his team. It was a most remarkable game making the trip on a horrible night more than worthwhile. Sometimes it works out, doesn’t it?!

last occasion I’d watched them and, with apologies to any readers from that neck of the woods, this is the

best I can offer for you”.

Pewsey Vale: Tuttle; Force-Jones, Neal; Cope, Amor, Marsden (sub: Lima 79); Ritchie, Martin, Horwood, Mackenzie (sub: Bunce 71), Field (sub: Vines 90+3) Notes: A stoppage time penalty equaliser brought bottom side Pewsey Vale a point at Hythe & Dibden. It was Hythe that had more of the game and they failed to find the net despite creating a number of chances. That was the case up to the 85th minute when Marcel Laptas made a good run down the right and crossed to the far post where Terry Cox headed home. It looked as though the visitors, who’d worked hard defensively, were returning to Wiltshire without a point. But there was a stoppage time lifeline when Hythe’s Sam Payne put in a clumsy challenge and Island referee Derek Hughes had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Michael Martin sent home keeper Mitch Stedman the wrong way from the penalty kick and, shortly after the restart, came the final whistle. The game almost ended much earlier though as the floodlights dimmed most noticeably midway through the first half but play carried on up to the break. News filtered through of the reserve game down the road at Fawley being abandoned due to a power failure. The lights were back to full power at the start of the second half but, suddenly, the ground was plunged into darkness with 64 minutes played but, fortunately, after an eleven-minute delay the power was restored and the match completed. Footnote: Although Clayfields had previously been a venue for local association matches, it was Pewsey Vale who were the visiting side in Hythe & Dibden’s first Wessex League match at the ground. On that day, 20/12/2014, Pewsey were victorious by 2-0 with goals by Craig Simmons and Robbie Maggs (had I attended that one then I would have featured it instead!). In 2019/20: Pewsey Vale were moved across the non-league pyramid and back to the Wessex League and, although the voided season is not included in any statistics, the club resigned from the league in November 2019 having played 14 games and took their reserve team’s place in the Wiltshire League – Premier Division.

One from Gary’s archives – “My 1000th match seen on a misty Friday night at Poole Stadium”.

Date: 25/02/1983 Southern League – Premier Division At: The Stadium

POOLE TOWN (2) 6 WATERLOOVILLE (1) 2 Poole Town: M. Jones; Chambers, Yeats (sub: Cheetham 75); Beaney, Coombes, Matthews; Stormont, Mulkern, Russell, Courtney, Bridle. Notes: I came home from work on a Friday evening only to receive a phone call from a friend: “I’ve just heard on Radio Solent that Poole are playing Waterlooville tonight; do you want to go?” Well, that’s how fixtures were often found out back then and there was only one answer and a call to the ground reveals the game is on but only if the fog clears! That wasn’t going to stop me either! The visitors took an early lead when Paul Hardyman fired low through a ruck of players and past Town keeper Martyn Jones. But the lead didn’t last long as Martin Stormont netted a similar goal from the edge of the box. Both sides hit the crossbar, Poole’s Robbie Russell managed to hit it twice (the second with his follow-up effort!). But the Dolphins went in front on the half-time whistle when a cross by Phil Matthews went straight into the far corner. Poole’s serial goal-getter Derek Courtney showed his class, taking his time when put through, to shoot into the corner on 56 minutes and, within two further minutes, its 4-1, Courtney heading down to Russell to nip past Ville keeper Steve Whitcher and score. Next, Russell was put clear and completed the finish to make it five and Courtney too scored another, stabbing the ball home from an unmarked position. It seemed a long time since Ville started the scoring but they completed it when Kevin Maddock shot home from close range off the bar in the 89th minute. It was indeed a foggy evening but visibility was clear enough to not cause any problems. The match was well handled by Corfe Mullen referee Brian Martin. Footnote (1): Both of these teams finished in two of the four relegation positions at the end of the season. Footnote (2): That was some way to get my 1000th match milestone, not to be said of all of them reached thereafter! What great days when Poole played at The Stadium – a fine ground which was also used for speedway and dog racing which cut the pitch so close that artificial turf was needed to provide the corner arcs (that is true!). There were some great players from those long off times too. This is very much a personal view, but football then was joie de vivre and played with a positive attitude. There was no such thing as players screaming childishly when fouled, or trying to get an opponent sent off with silly antics and no sign of anyone shielding the ball in the corner near to full time in the hope off clinging on for a narrow win (perhaps that was just as well here!). It is an absolute pleasure to be able to recollect such great Poole Town memories via my scribblings and reflect how the game has changed – but clearly not all for the better.

Notes: Having already been to Enham Alamein in the morning (who remembers them?) and Shepton Mallet in the afternoon it was back up the A303 to North Hampshire for match number three during the Christmas break. Portals got off to a great start with a goal in the very first minute after a shot was blocked on the line by a Sports defender, John Guyatt was there to shoot home. The home side added a second goal on 21 minutes when Roy Baker got forward and crossed, it was knocked out and Steve Oates fired in low and hard from the edge of the box. As they did in the first half, Portals netted a goal at the beginning of the second period, this time Wally Cameron’s corner being headed into goal at the near post by Barry Donnelly. Next, Baker got in on the act, with just Sholing keeper Henry to beat, he shot low into the far corner. Oates made it 5-0 late in the game, a shot that had rebounded off the post came out to him to finish. Footnote: Portals finished the season as champions of Hampshire League Division 2, edging out Lymington on goal difference. They spent the next three years playing in Division 1 and took the Wessex step in the summer of 1986 but continued for just that inaugural season as changes to the company policy led to their demise.

PORTLAND UNITED (2) 5 GILLINGHAM TOWN 0 Portland United: Davis; Beauchamp (sub: Linard 72), Reader; Gibson, Williams, Booker; Stone (sub: Greeno 72), Watkin, Turrell, Preston, Evans. Sub (not used): Whyton Notes: It was a cold end-of-season evening – in fact, I don’t think I’d ever been as cold watching a game in mid-April as I was on this evening. This was a 6.30pm kick-off, in the days before Portland had floodlights. An early lead for the Blues when Shaun Beauchamp’s right-wing corner found Nigel Evans at the far post and he made the most of being in space to head firmly home. Portland came close to adding to their lead and eventually did so close to half-time when Aaron Watkin got into the Gills box, got past a defender and finished low into the far corner. It was 2-0 at the break but Gillingham did have their opportunities with Christian Chambers twice being denied by Gavin Davis saves. It got awfully gloomy at the ground – the sort of light that you cope with at the end of a midweek game without floodlights – but on this occasion there were still 30 minutes to play! Andy Turrell scored United’s third goal, having been sent clear by a Nick Preston pass, netting firm and low from around 20 yards. Former Weymouth FC player Micky Greeno had been introduced from the bench; he was a folk hero down in this neck of the woods. Preston added another goal against the gloom on 81 minutes, put clear he netted with a dipping shot. As the rain set in, I opted for the cover behind the goal, this proved to be a big mistake as I could hardly see up the other end of the pitch when Portland’s fifth went in, Watkin apparently scored it but that’s all I could work out. Two minutes later, and with five of the ninety still to play, the referee blew the final note. Footnote: I’ve made a few more visits to this ground since and, even on a hot bright day, there is at least a chilly breeze noted! However, the warm welcome received there more than makes up for the seemingly unceasing cold weather in the Isle of Portland.

CHANNEL HOPPING

In the distant past, the FA Vase occasionally threw up a trip to the far south, the Channel Islands. Here is a list of all those games featuring members of the Wessex League at the time the game was played. Bournemouth are the most successful on their travels with a 100% winning record from their three adventures. Goals for the Poppies on those three occasions came from David Hull (1988/89), Darren Elmes (1990/91) and a double from Darren McBride on the last occasion in 1995/96.

Vale Recreation certainly held sway on their Guernsey turf with four wins from their six encounters- including an epic battle with Brockenhurst with 22 goals netted in the three games (the first game having resulted in a 2-2 draw at Grigg Lane). Jersey based First Tower on the other hand failed to taste victory in three of their four home games.

On their travels, Vale collected just two draws from three trips whilst conversely First Tower won three and lost one. Odd about the reversal of fortunes with the two Island teams.

This report appeared in the Southampton Echo the following weekend… “Despite a last minute panic the Medisport Wessex League representative side played with skill and composure to record their first win on Wednesday. Manager Kevin Dinan had to make a few emergency phone calls when 10 of the original 14-strong squad dropped out. But damage was soon repaired thanks to the co-operation of managers such as BAT’s Mick Geddes, Trevor Prowting (Sholing Sports) and Nigel Kent (Follands) who made players available at short notice. Their reward was a slick 2-1 win against the Dan Air League with Colin Burdle and Andy Price the scorers. Dan Air replied after Paul Baxter conceded a dubious penalty. Squad: Horn, Juryeff (Havant), Beacham (Wimborne), Hurst, Dempsey, Burdle, Baxter (BAT Sports), Price (Follands), Gregory (Sholing Sports), Killick (Wimborne), Pitter (Eastleigh), Farmiloe (Sholing Sports), Milne (Bournemouth).” Dan Air was a sponsor’s name for the Combined Counties League.

Having spent a fair few hours trawling through Full Time, here is the list of the top 15 LEAGUE goalscorers since 2005/06; no full records prior to that season unfortunately. It’s not been an easy task as there are several naming conventions seemingly in place and there are some records that may be duplicated because there have been two players of that name during the period of time under review. I believe I’ve sorted out the vast majority of them, but none of them appear to come inside the top 30 or so, with over 4,100 records checked.

We hear that Fawley are looking for a Goalkeeper Coach for the coming season. If you’re interested, please contact the club directly. Sorry to hear that long term Verwood Town Committee member and former Assistant Manager, Nigel Reeves has recently passed away. On behalf of the League we extend our sincere condolences to family and friends at this sad time. After recently announcing Dan Newman as the new Chairman at Downton - the club have now appointed Rae Hughes in the role of Vice Chairman. Welcome to them both. We do also note a nice initiative being offered at the Brian Whitehead Sports ground for the coming season, the Robins will be offering FREE entry to all home matches this season to NHS and Care staff, plus a free hot drink or beverage at the bar. A similar arrangement is on offer at United Services Portsmouth as well, their offer is also extended to serving Royal Navy personnel. Congratulations to both clubs on these initiatives. Other clubs may well be of like minds and apologies if I have missed giving them a name check. Pat McManus continues as Manager at Brockenhurst with Sam Cousins and Ryan Andress assisting, the Grigg Lane boss is the longest serving Manager in the League. There is similarly no change in the same roles at Andover New Street where John Smith will carry on as Manager next season, with Iain Meechan and Danny Dolan assisting. As we have covered the League Cup in this edition, we can go back to 12 May 1988 and a game that was to be the final competitive game played at Church Litten, the then home of Newport IOW. The League contests between the finalists East Cowes Vics and Romsey Town saw the mainland side have the upper hand, with two wins- 2-0 on the Island and a best of seven win in Hampshire, and they ended the season in 3rd spot. Vics ended in 9th in their second season as members. Such was the confidence at the Bypass Ground, a number of boats were hired to bring the supporters to the Island for the Final, but to no avail as it ended East Cowes Victoria beating Romsey Town 2-0, and as at today this remains the only League Cup victory for the Vics. The heroes that day were goal scorers John Hazell and Paul Butler. Refereed by Andy Pearson, the two sides taking the field looked like this, and yes that is well known local goalkeeper John Simpkins in goal for the Vics that day- East Cowes Victoria: Simpkins, Young, Cade, Hazell, Shaw, J Watson, Minshull (A Watson), A Butler, Blow, Deacon, P Butler Romsey Town: Brown, Chandler, Fear, Rankin, Battey, O’Leary, P Jones, Williams, Brockway, Preston (Benfield), S Jones unused sub Bell

The Pitch Preparation Fund was launched on Thursday by the Premier League, the FA and the Government’s Football Foundation. It is providing grants of up to £5,000, to help eligible football clubs and organisations ensure their pitches are match-ready for when Government advice allows football to start being played again. FA National League System Clubs from Step 1-6 that maintain their own natural grass and third generation (3G) artificial grass pitches are eligible

to apply for funding, as are grassroots football clubs and organisations, Welsh Cymru Premier League clubs, and clubs in The FA Women’s Pyramid (Tier 1-5). The application window is open from today until Monday 25 May 2020. Club Secretaries have been sent the information, but please refer to the link on the Football Foundation website should you want more information.
