MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

Tuesday 22 September Emirates FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round COWES SPORTS 0-5 WESTON-SUPER-MARE THIS was a big ask for step 5 side Cowes against opponents who play two levels higher but had only commenced their season last Saturday. But there was a lot between the teams on the evening writes Gary Day. The key moments came ten minutes or so either side of half-time when the Seagulls notched four of their goals. They could have scored more but for some fine keeping by Ed Hatt. Right from the outset the Somerset side played fine cohesive football but some gallant early defending by the Yachtsmen kept them at bay. Some overplaying out of the Weston defence produced a chance for Phillips whose effort was blocked by a defender. Weston had a half-hearted handball shout in the Cowes penalty box but all they got was a corner. Cowes continued to work hard at the back to quell the Weston tide but when they had the ball Cowes struggled to put moves together. This was contrary to Weston whose good pass and move play looked like simplicity but was, of course, well drilled. Hall almost put Weston in front when he took a cross field pass on the volley from a wide position but Hatt adjusted well to palm the ball out at his near post. Jagger-Cane and Waite fired over and just when the home gathering wondered whether Sports could take a 0-0 situation into half-time, some good work down the left involving Grubb and Hall saw a dangerous cross into the box and the lunging KNOWLES knocked it home. McFarlane put in a good cross for Cowes which was headed clear but, a minute before the break, Cowes were opened up and JAGGER-CANE’s header drifted home, despite the despairing attempt by a defender to clear, the referee’s assistant confirming the ball to be over the line. HT 0-2. Considering the journey made by the visiting side, half-time was sensibly taken on the pitch by the teams and within ten minutes, the second half commenced. This half started in the same way as the first had finished and Weston had already caused problems to Cowes before HUMPHRIES struck a well-controlled half-volley from 25-yards into the corner (Cowes a bit unlucky claiming a foul in the build-up). It was soon four when a corner was partially cleared and a good pass left THOMAS to shoot home. It was suddenly looking like a long

evening for the home side. KNOWLES added his second for the Seagulls, a neat volley from a Jones cross and Hatt made a good save, touching over a Grubb shot. Phillips tried a distant shot for Cowes but keeper Parnell was down to save. Weston had an opportunity to score a sixth goal when Knowles was tripped in the area and the same player looked for his hat-trick but Hatt got a strong hand to his firm spot-kick. A great run down the right by Wykes almost brought Cowes a consolation but Phillips missed his header in the middle. FT: 0-5 in front of a COVID restricted capacity crowd of 300. So, who remembers the days of 7.30pm kick-offs and the game finishing at ten-past nine? Yes, this was a rarity in this-day-and-age! Add to that, with the absence of the fast service late in the evening, the ‘slow boat’ from East Cowes was necessary. To do this a short stretch of the River Medina must be crossed and with the floating bridge once again out of action, an open top motor launch was taken. The sight of twelve face-masked people sat on it on the crossing in the dark was surreal … akin to a prison escape film! But remember, no more than a few months ago it would certainly have aroused suspicion. Times change!

MIDWEEK ROUND UP

Only four games to cover, all in the Emirates FA Cup and all involving member Clubs facing higher ranked opposition. The honours on the night go to CHRISTCHURCH, the only winners, who came from a goal down to defeat Dorchester by two goals to one at Hurn Bridge. Tom Blair put the Southern League Premier South

Club ahead only for an own goal and a Harvey Wright strike to give our side a famous victory. Wright’s goal came in the 90th minute and if you are going to score a winning goal then that is very much the time to do so! Given their relative closeness in the geographical sense it is a surprise that this is the first time the two Clubs had met in the Competition. Their exploits will see them gain the chance to add a further £3,375 to the coffers should they win at the next stage, this is certainly a carrot if one is needed. They stand to collect £1,125 if they fall. TADLEY CALLEVA did themselves and the League proud in what could well be the biggest game in their history, only

going down to Truro, again from the Southern League Premier, by a single goal at Barlows Park. Alex Battle scored for the Cornish visitors in the first half and a strong defensive performance from the hosts ensured there were no further goals but they did not, on the night, have the firepower at the other end. COWES SPORTS also faced Southern League Premier opposition with Weston Super Mare making the long trip to the Island and proving too strong for the Yachtsmen. Two up at the break, they added a further three in the second half to emphasise the difference in standard having, incidentally, defeated Fareham at the same stage in the Competition last season. AFC STONEHAM were the only one of our four sides who had to travel, journeying to Somerset to meet Frome Town from the Southern League South. Conceding a goal in the third minute was not the start they would have wanted and despite a goal from Sam Woodward they were 3-1 down at the break and there was one more goal in the second half making the final score 4-1. All three of our Clubs had the maximum permitted attendances while the Frome/Stoneham tie attracted 238 spectators. One offshoot for Christchurch is that on the same evening their former player, Harry Cornick, came on as a second half Substitute for Luton Town against Manchester United. Well done to all our Clubs, not only for the performances on the field, but for dealing with the off field problems and extra work in these unusual times, no doubt magnified because it was the FA Cup.

THIRTY SIX NIL

As most people interested in football will know the above represents the highest score ever recorded in a First Class Fixture and happened a very long time ago. As far back as 1885-86 in fact in the Scottish Cup which was already in its thirteenth year. One wonders as to what football was like then with the initial thought as to whether there were crossbars but research shows they came in to being in 1875, replacing tape which until then had been stretched between the posts. The game in question was of course between ARBROATH and BON ACCORD, two of the one hundred and thirty four Clubs that entered the Competition. These were divided in to seven areas on a geographical basis and, presumably because of the difficulty of travel, there was only one area relating to the North of the Country. The “famous” result happened in the First Round with the winners fifteen up at half time and their centre forward finishing with thirteen, against a side that had only been in existence for a year or so and soon folded. What is generally perhaps unknown is that on the same day in the same Competition Dundee Harps defeated Aberdeen Rovers thirty five nil. Goals were in plentiful supply with other scores of sixteen, (Queens Park) fifteen, (Renton) and three of eleven. That was Round One and the goals continued to flow for the two high scorers in Round Two with Arbroath scoring nine and the Dundee side four and they continued in the same vein in Round Three with seven and eight respectively. Those two rounds also produced scores of fifteen ( Airdrieonians) twelve, eleven and two tens. There were also thirteen withdrawals over the first two Rounds. Come Round Four and both sides were drawn away for the first time. Arbroath lost 5-3 at Hibernian – still one of the leading Scottish Clubs of today – whilst the Harps lost six nil to Vale of Leven, who are also still in existence today but playing lower down the Scottish Pyramid. There were three more Rounds before the Final, which was between Queens Park and Renton, the holders, with the former taking the Trophy for the eighth time in the thirteen years of the Competition. Renton is a small village some three miles from Dumbarton and the north bank of the Clyde and the Football Club joined the Scottish League in 1880 but were expelled in the same season for “financial irregularities”. Times have not changed in some respects! They re-joined again the following year before withdrawing in to local football after seven seasons, finally folding in 1922. Arbroath of course are long time members of the Scottish League but Bon Accord only lasted for two or three years. It is suggested that there is a Club of that name now playing in the Aberdeen Amateur League but they do not appear in the five Divisions that were operating last season. The real hard luck story of the affair however belongs to Dundee Harps, At the end of their first game the referee reported the score as 37-0 but the Club Secretary insisted it was 35-0 and that was the reported result. Had they accepted the referee’s version their name would be in the record books and known to all. Football can be cruel in a number of ways.

CLUB NEWS

We heard last weekend that three Managers have decided to move on. Callum Brooks at Portland United, Jody Rivers at Downton and John Smith at Andover New Street. Danny Dolan and Jamie Coleman will take on the role at Foxcotte Park with John moving to a Director of Football role. Ben Smith looks to be in sole charge now at Downton, whilst we await an update as regards a permanent replacement at the New Grove, although it’s been reported Gary Bailey and Mark Carter have taken the role on an interim basis. Doubtless readers will recall Jesse Waller-Lassen from Team Solent days, the midfielder featured in #Hashtag United’s penalty shoot-out Emirates FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round win over Soham Town Rangers on Monday, which was available on BBC i-player. He marked the occasion with a well taken equaliser around six minutes from the end to send the game to penalties and then converted the winner in the 4-2 win. A date has been arranged for the 2019/20 Portsmouth Senior Cup semi-final clash between Baffins Milton Rovers and Horndean – it’ll be on Wednesday 11 November at the PMC Stadium. A date for the tie involving

COVID-19 GUIDANCE UPDATE Clubs will have had their attention drawn to the Government’s recently updated guidance on test and trace, and specifically a new section on the use of official NHS QR codes. This has important implications for us all. By maintaining records of staff, customers and visitors, and displaying an official NHS QR poster, you will help NHS Test and Trace to identify and notify people who may have been exposed to the virus. By now clubs must have registered for an official NHS QR code and as of now, must display the official NHS QR poster- for avoidance of doubt this will be a legal requirement. The NHS COVID-19 app has a feature that allows users to quickly and easily ‘check in’ to each venue by scanning the code. The information stays on the user’s phone. For our clubs you do not have to ask people who choose to ‘check in’ using the official NHS QR code to provide their contact details. If there is an outbreak associated with a venue, a message will be sent to the relevant app users with the necessary public health advice. The App was made available in the latter stages of last week and there have already been TV adverts concerning it, in the teething stages so there may be a few technical issues. But regardless of that, Clubs will need to continue their current test and Trace process. This will help to avoid the reintroduction of lockdown measures and support the country to return to, and maintain, a more normal way of life. In addition to maintaining and sharing records where requested and displaying an official NHS QR Code poster, clubs must also continue to follow other government guidance to minimise the transmission of COVID-19. This includes maintaining a safe working environment and following social distancing guidelines. Failure to comply will result in Government issued fines. For further information please note that the NHS has an FAQ section on their QR code website: https://faq.covid19.nhs.uk/category/?id=CAT-01043&parentid=CAT-01027 and also a QR helpline at the bottom of this page queries are best directed here if the FAQs do not help: https://www.gov.uk/create-coronavirus-qr-poster The FA have also updated their guidance and this may be found here: https://www.thefa.com/news/2020/sep/10/updated-covid-19-guidance-for-grassroots-nls-wfp-100920

LEAGUE NEWS The League Chairman had given notice of a 'ZOOM' meeting to be held this morning commencing at 10.30 am, this has been postponed due to the FA postponing their Step 5 and 6 Leagues meeting on 24th September. Once we know when the Step 5 and 6 Leagues meeting has been re-arranged a new date for the Covid-19 Zoom meeting will be arranged. With the closure of clubhouses at 22:00 under the new restrictions, the League is prepared to be flexible in permitting earlier kick off times for midweek fixtures. With immediate effect clubs can mutually agree to bring kick off times forward from 19:45 to 19:30 providing that, where officials have been appointed to games, they also agree and the League is advised in good time so that websites can be changed. With each Division playing every midweek through October will home clubs take the initiative where they want to take advantage of the earlier kick off time. This also applies to League Cup ties. In the Emirates FA Cup, Christchurch have been drawn at home to National League North side Gloucester City. The tie will be at Hurn Bridge on Saturday 3 October, the hosts will be arranging ticket news over this weekend. The Tigers will not be strangers, as they visited back in 2005/06 in a 1st Qualifying Round Replay after a goalless draw and the hosts won 3-0 that evening, more of the same wouldn’t go amiss and we wish them well in their quest.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Saturday 26 September Division One WHITCHURCH UNITED 3-1 EAST COWES VICS FIRST victory and points of the season for Whitchurch in a game that they deserved to win with the visitors not helped by having to play for the best part of an hour with ten men. On a bright afternoon and in a chilly

wind the home side made the best possible start with a goal inside two minutes writes John Gorman. After some preliminary sparring in midfield Whitchurch made some ground down the right and the low cross was turned home by Ryan LONG from the edge of the six yard box, and the striker was denied an almost instant second when keeper Karl Steinborn-Busse narrowly beat him to a through ball way outside his penalty area. Play was very much in the East Cowes half and the keeper rescued his side with a smart reflex save as Long again was first to a cross. George Bishop showed good control on the left but his shot was deflected wide before a golden chance to increase the lead after twenty minutes. A corner from the left, the usual scrimmaging in the area, a blast on the whistle and though there had been no appeal of any sort the referee cautioned a defender and awarded a penalty though sadly, from my position on the half way line I have no idea as to why. Perhaps justice was done after a fashion when Nick Yeomans rather scooped the kick over the crossbar. After a hold up whilst one of the goal nets was repaired, Vics’ Tyler Greenslade broke clear on the left but his cross evaded both sets of shirts in the area before at the other end two corners in succession for the Jamboys with Nick Beattie’s header from the second landing on top of the net, seven minutes from the break and it was 2-0 as Bishop cut in from the left, his shot was deflected off a defender and Ryan Gregory, almost instinctively, handled it on the line. Penalty and an unavoidable red card and BISHOP made no mistake from the spot and within two minutes it was three. Vics were still sorting themselves out at the back and right back Connor Bloomfield’s cross was firmly headed home by YEOMANS. Bishop troubled the defence all afternoon and was inches wide of the far post whilst the visitors were not helping themselves by conceding too many free kicks in dangerous areas and one taken by Craig Rutledge was turned by Long in to Jamie Blackburn’s path but the shot was too high and also the last action of the half. HT 3-0 Whilst it was Whitchurch that struck early in the opening half East Cowes showed they were still in the game with a goal after just four minutes, It owed a lot to the home side’s defending but was also a good finish, Goalkeeper Konrad Szymaniak came way out of his area towards his left touchline and attempted to exchange passes with a defender, somehow it all went wrong, despite the closeness of the two players to each other, and Jimmi BURTON skilfully steered the loose ball in to the unguarded net. Minutes later the keeper again ventured way out of his area and beat the oncoming forward to the ball by a matter of inches and at this stage, and in fairness for most of the second half, it was easy to forget that the visitors were a man short. Another cross from Bloomfield passed unhindered across the six yard box before the referee, who had enjoyed a good first half, must have felt the yellow card burning a hole in his pocket as he produced it three times in as many minutes for challenges that looked routine from the side lines. Another Whitchurch free kick saw a Matt Page header skim the top of the crossbar as the game begam to peter out. Burton was a lone hand up front for Vics and always outnumbered and Yeomans and Blackburn were both wide for the visitors before, with the temperature dropping alarmingly despite it still being September, the final whistle bought an almost welcome halt to the proceedings. There will be better games and there will be worse games but Whitchurch will be happy to get their points total up and running and Vics will no doubt be rueing the unfortunate, but correct, red card. FT 3-1 Saturday 26 September Premier Division CHRISTCHURCH 2-2 ALRESFORD TOWN THE phrase "after the Lord Mayors show" was heard a few times around Hurn Bridge this afternoon but that was an unfair description of a Christchurch performance that was not short on effort but lacked that little spark of luck in and around the penalty area writes Roger Allen. Their opponents, Alresford Town, with a completely new team are still settling in but, despite spending most of the afternoon under pressure, they gave a dogged performance and were never behind in the game. Both sides had early chances as Nick Swann shot wide for the home side and Ashley Elson shot weakly when well-placed for Alresford. In the 9th minute Christchurch should have taken the lead when they were

awarded a penalty as Max Wilcock was barged over by Kayode Conteh. The kick was taken by Ash Pope but his shot was high over the crossbar. Christchurch continued to dominate the goalmouth action as Ron Frost's long throws started to trouble the Alresford defence. Wilcock headed over from one such throw then Mickey Finch volleyed wide. At the other end George Sheridan shot straight at Lewis Gunstone-Gray. On 41 minutes Alresford took the lead. ELSON's pace had caused trouble for Billy Walker and Harvey Wright at the heart of the home defence and a moment of indecision left the central striker a clear run on goal and he placed the ball coolly past Gunstone-Gray. HT 0-1

Playing down the slope Christchurch were always going to enjoy territorial advantage in the second half and so it proved. But it looked like being one of those afternoon's that the ball would just not drop for them in and around the penalty area. However on 63 minutes their luck changed. Again it was an assault on the Alresford defence from wide out that fell to FINCH on the edge of the goal area and his close range shot found the net. Next up it was Ron Frost who warmed the

fingers of Magpies keeper, Aaron Bufton, from long range but the keeper was more than up to the task as he was for most of the afternoon. From the resulting corner Christchurch suffered a blow as some dissent from their captain Billy Walker led to a sin bin that was to cost his side dear. Before Christchurch could rearrange at the back, Louis RUSSELL squeezed the ball past Gunstone-Gray on 77 minutes. Russell was lucky to still be on the field after the referee had taken a very lenient view of some blatant time wasting which could have earned the player a second yellow card. Two minutes later Christchurch, still with 10 players, were back on level terms. Again it was goalmouth scramble but this time it was substitute Luke STONE that scored from close range. Apart from an effort from Alresford sub, Jack Francis, which drifted wide, that was the end of the goalmouth action for the afternoon. All in all probably a fair result - after all the effort they put in, it was hard to deny that Alresford were worth a point. FT 2-2

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

We start again this week in the Dorset Premier League Hamworthy drop out of the top three after losing a best of seven game against near neighbours Merley Cobham but Westlands stay top courtesy of goal difference after they won by the odd goal in three against Dorchester. Balti rattled in four without reply at basement side Wareham to move into third. In the Hampshire Premier League Bush Hill took advantage of Infinity dropping points against Stockbridge, to close the gap at the top to four points, although the pressure is still on with both Paulsgrove and Liphook closing up as well. With just the one game in the Hampshire Combination & Development Football League yesterday, Salisbury and United Services sharing four goals and the points. Salisbury stay top but have played more than nearest rivals Wimborne Town.

WEEK 4 ROUND UP

A lot of goals yesterday with 82 spread across the two Divisions, including Friday night’s game, which averages out at over four games a goal. Good for spectators, not so good for defenders writes John Gorman. First mention in the Premier Division goes, by a short head, to Hamworthy United. Baffins is never an easy place to get a result so 4-0 is highly creditable with a goal from Adam Costello adding to a hat trick from Eddie Hodge.

Close behind in the credit stakes come Fareham Town who more than added to Portland’s early season woes with an 8-2 victory at Cams Alders. Three from Josh Benfield and singles from Casey Bartlett-Scott, Tom Settle, Luke Slade, Charlie Cooper and Callum Benfield propelled “the Creeksiders” to the top of the table, while Portland’s goals came from Josh Camp and Eder Baptista. Nigel Long (left) and John Bailey (right) certainly picked the right one yesterday. The Fareham legends with over 500 appearances between them were at Cams Alders for the game.

The largest attendance of the day was at AFC Portchester where the home side scored twice without reply against AFC Stoneham courtesy of goals from Lee Wort and Barry Mason. One imagines the cumulative career

total goals credited to those two must be quite high! Bashley were not far behind in terms of attendance and rewarded the faithful with a single goal defeat of Horndean, Harry Morgan’s strike making it two defeats in a row for the visitors. Blackfield & Langley maintained their unbeaten record, goals from Sami Makhloufi and River Smith outweighing one from Shaftesbury’s Jordan Matthews, while Lymington made it two wins out of two with goals from Luke Churchill and Owen Fee at Tadley who failed to find the net in reply. A good point for Alresford with a two all draw at Christchurch - Mickey Finch and Luke Stone for the home side and Ashley Elson and Louis Russell for the visitors – and the points were also shared at Victoria Park. Lewis Chambers scored for Bournemouth with Josh Batt’s reply earning visitors Hamble Club their first point of the campaign. Draw number three was at Amesbury with the home side also securing their first point in sharing four goals with Brockenhurst. Freddie Bullard scored both the visiting goals with Christian Boothe and Adam Holloway earning the welcome home point. Lastly, but due much praise, was the outcome at Calthorpe Park, where Fleet probably recorded their best result since re-joining the League with a 6-1 demolition of Cowes Sports. Billy Oram led the way with a hat trick, backed up by Mal Thomas, Rowan Sharratt and Brad Passfield with George Holmes replying for the Islanders. Division One commenced the weekend Programme on Friday evening with Laverstock & Ford making it four wins from four with a 3-1 win at Fawley. The Wiltshire side were two up at the break through Lewis Barr and Jake Rawkins with Dom Jackson adding a third in the second half against one from Dylan Knight, leaving Fawley still seeking their first point. There were three Saturday games where the home side scored five. The first on the Island where Newport and Verwood amassed eight between them. Connor Kelly(2), Aleks Przespolewski, Jordan Browne and Joe Craig with the five and Matt Vining, Diop Evans and Harvey Elsom getting on the scoresheet for the visitors. Downton have had an awful start to the season by last season’s standard and it did not get any better at Burnaby Road with a 5-1 defeat at the hands of US Portsmouth. Familiar goalscorers all round with Andy Todd (2), James Franklyn( 2) and Dec Seiden for the home side and a consolation from Tom Moseley. In the midweek Preview it was suggested that on last season’s form the visit to Ringwood of Hythe & Dibden would probably mean an away win but things could change over the close season. And change it was as Ringwood scored five without reply with two goals apiece from Ryan Hamm and Ben Harris and one from Joe Petty. One goal behind were Bemerton Heath playing their first League game of the season for various reasons and marking it with a 4-1 victory over Petersfield. Justin Bennett with a pair, Kane O’Keefe and Arshia Sheibatzadeh did the damage after Marvin Orepo had given the Rams an early lead. Andover Town moved in to third place in the table after an entertaining three all draw at New Milton – goals from Ben Cooper, Tyrrell Sampson and Morgan Turner against two from Josh Bertie and one from Adam Pattison for the Town – while Andover New Street rediscovered their goal touch with a 3-1 win over Totton & Eling. Brett Denham with a double and new signing Mikey Davis for the Street and an own goal constituting the reply for the Millers. Follands made it nine points out of nine with a single goal victory over Romsey, Connor Rowe the marksman, and Whitchurch got off the mark with a 3-1 defeat of East Cowes Vics. Ryan Long, George Bishop and Nick Yeomans for the home side, who also missed a penalty, and a Jimmi Burton goal for Vics who played for an hour with ten men after a handball offence on the goal line. A full Programme completed, thanks for all the information and more so for coping with the conditions under which games are having to be played at present, we’ll close with these three words.
