This Swyber issue high-lightsandpaystributetoourvariousHSEteamswhohaveover the years, been the leading vanguards of Cause NoHarm.Theirtirelesseffortsbothonshoreandoffshorehavesteadily improvedour safety records. I credit theirpersis-tenceandinsistenceonsafetymeasuresthataimtomakeourworkplaceandworkprocessessecure,enablingustogohometoourfamiliessafeandsound. WeneedtounderstandthoughthatCauseNoHarmismorethanjustaccidentprevention–itsessenceisinbeingmind-fuloftheimpactofouractionsandtakingresponsibilityforitsoutcome.Thismindsetpavesthewayforanewcorpo-
ratephilosophythatwewillallsoontakepartin:Continu-ous Swiber Improvement (CSI). CSIwill be ourmanage-ment and operations improvement system inspired bytheKaizenandLeanmanagementphilosophies.KaizenisJapanese for “improvement”or “change for thebetter”andrefers tothepracticesthat focusoncontinuous im-provement of processes in manufacturing, engineering,supportingbusinessprocessesandmanagement. Itsob-jectiveistocontinuallyimproveallfunctions,involvingallemployees from theChairmanof theBoard to theyardworkers.
Thisimprovementofstandardizedactivitiesandprocess-es,aimstoeliminatewasteinbusinessprocessesandtoincrease efficiencies. In the sameway, Lean is centeredonpreservingthevalueofwhatonedoeswithlesswork.LeanphilosophyisderivedmostlyfromthefamedToyotaProduction System (TPS). The steady growth of Toyota,fromasmallcompanytotheworld’slargestautomaker,istestamenttothesoundnessandsuccessofthispractice.
Inthecomingmonths,youwillhearandgettoknowmoreaboutCSI,learnnewtermsandprocessestomakethosesmall changes thatwillmatter. I count on you to adoptCSIinthesamewaythatyouhaveembracedCNHinyourdailyroutine.Whilekaizenusuallydeliverssmallimprove-ments, the culture of continuous and aligned small im-provementsandstandardizationwillyieldlargeresultsintheformofcompoundimprovementinthelong-term.

NothingismorecompellingthanapersonalstoryandSwiberwasabletoinvite two distinguished gentlemen that are trailblazers in their chosenfieldstoaddresstheSeniorManagementonthefirstday.Mr.FrancisLay,PresidentDirectorofBFIFinancesharedaboutsurvivingacrisis.Hespe-cifically talkedaboutthe1997Asianfinancialcrisis in Indonesiaandthedecisiveactionstheywereforcedtotakeinordertokeeptheircompanyafloat.Hewascandidabouthispersonalexperienceduringthattryingpe-riodevenashesharedinvaluableinsightsthathelearnedthehardway,stressingtheimportanceofalwaysbeingpreparedforanycircumstances.

Intheprocess,GKdiscoveredthatsustainabilitywaspossiblethroughaholisticcommunitydevelopmentapproachwhereslumsaretransformedintobeautiful,healthyandproductivecommunities.
Today,thereare2000GKcommunitiesalloverthePhilippinesincludingsitesinCambodia,Indonesia,andPapuaNewGuinea.TheGKGlobalHeadquartersinthePhilippinesencouragesinitiativesfromdifferentnationalitiestobringtheGKwaytotheirrespectivecountries.

Mr.AlokGupta joinedSwiber in2005asOperationsManager forIndiaandwasappointedtotheroleofGeneralManagerfor IndiaMarineOperationsin2011.Mr.GuptaalsooverseestheHRandAd-ministrationfunctionsoftheIndiaoffice.PriortojoiningSwiber,hehas20yearsofrichexperienceinlogistics,projectmanagement&execution.Mr.GuptaworkedwithVedantaGroupinIndiawherehewaspartof theproject teamfromstart tofinish for theirCopperSmelterGreenfieldProject.Hewasalsoinvolvedinlogisticsopera-tionsofdismantling,packingandshiftingofplantandmachineriesfromUSAtoIndia,andlateronbecamepartoftheoperationsteamintheirvariousplants.Mr.GuptagraduatedfromBangaloreUniver-sityin1991withaBachelorinMechanicalEngineeringandholdsaDiplomainBusinessAdministration.

Summitted on 27 Jan 2011“ClimbingVinson isprettymucha logisticalnightmare,as it isadeepfreeze.ClimberslandandcongregateinPuntaArenas,atinytowninSouthernPatagonia,attheSoutherntipofChile.
HighCampwasexposedandwindy.Therewereincredibleviewsallaround,butstill, itwasn’tavery friendlyenvironment.Don’tlettheclearblueskiesfoolyou.IrememberhavingtosetuptentsatHighCampandhavingtoremovemydownmittensinordertoactuallybeabletousemyfingers,anditwasbrutal.Ihadtostickmyhandsbackeveryfewminutestothawout.
The terrain on summit daywas prettymuch steadily uphill thewhole way, with some exposed climbing on a rocky ridge withdrop-offsonbothsidesonthelastbittothesummit.Thealtitudewasn’tsomuchofanissue,aswasthetemperature.Therewasnowindatthestart,anditwasburninghotunderthedirectsunlight;awhilelater,thewindwouldstartupandthreatenimminentfrost-bite ifanother layerwasn’taddedonquickly;halfanhour later,winddieddownanditwasboilingagain.Yougetthepicture.Wesummittedon27Jan2011.
BeinginAntarcticawasanincredibleexperience.Ifeelextremelyfortunatetohavehadtheopportunitytospendtwoweeksonthefrozencontinent,andgettingtothesummitofVinsonwastheic-ing on the cake. Vinson takes a couple of records for being thecoldestclimbI’veeverbeenon,aswellasthemostremote.”

Itsnowednonstopfor4days!ComingtoCamp1thepreviousday,wehadtobreaktrailinfreshsnowandthewholenightthewindwashowlingandtherewassomuchsnowwehadtodigourwayoutofourtent!WeweregoingtocacheatCamp2butthebliz-zardcontinuedbutwewantedtotry.Webroketrailinkneedeepsnowforalmost3hoursandwenavigatedbyGPSasthesnowhadcoveredallprevioustracks.Finallytheblizzardbecameagaleandwejustputourcacheontheslope.
Wesummittedon15Feb.Leftat6amandreachedat1230andtook6.5hrstoreachthetop,quiteagoodtime!AfterthatwegotbacktoCamp3topackourstuff,traversedanddescendeddirectlytobasecampontheothersideofthemountainatPlazadeMulas.Wearehappybutsupertired.Itwasaverylongdayanditwasour9thdayofclimbinginarow!”

Forthefirsttimeever,theprogramopenedwithtwobaby lions performing the traditional dance. Theboomingmusicaccompanimentreverberatedthroughoutthedeckasthebaby lionsmovedaroundandeffectivelysetthemoodfortheensuingfestivities.GroupCEOandPresidentMr.FrancisWongtalkedabouttheessenceoftheChineseNewYeartraditionsandthe spirit of sharing. He also took the opportunity to announcethenewappointmentswhichwere initiallypresentedonlytotheseniormanagementgroupduringtheirrecentlyconcludedsummitinSentosa.

The ultimate objective of any organization is to have ZERO TRIR(TotalRecordableIncidentRate).TheformulawasdesignedbyOH-SAS18001forcalculatingthisisTRIR=Totalrecordableincidentsx1000000/totalmanhoursworked.RecordableincidentscompriseofMedicaltreatmentcases,Restrictedworkcases,seriousinjurycasesandfatalities.Thiswillhoweverbeachievablewheneveryoneintheorganizationbelievesthataccidentsarenotnormalinanyoperationandallaccidentsarepreventable.Thisfigureissignificantbecauseitshedslightonthesafetycultureofanorganization.Itisdifficulttoassignanidealrateastheratevarieswithmanyfactorslikecompetencyofpersonnel,useofthirdpartypersonnelforoperations,supervision,qualityofmanpowerinvolved,natureofoperationsetc.
ToparktheTRIRatZERO,SOCHSEalongwiththecontinuoussupportofseniorman-agementandSuperintendents isdriving the safetyculture to theheartsandmindsoftheworkforce.Thecriteriahereisnotaboutthestatisticsalone.TheideabehindachievingZEROaccidentsisthatwheneverthereisaninjurytoanypersonnel,itcausesmoderatetoseverepaintotheinjuredpersonandhisfamilymembersandhencedoesnotfitintotheSwiberphilosophyof“CauseNoHarm”
TheacronymSMILEstandsforSee,Monitor,Identify,Listsafebehaviorsandeliminateunsafebehaviors.Itisanobservationandfeedbacktechniquewhichisrunbywork-ersforworkers.Itisaprocessthataddressesunsafeactsandconditionsamongsttheworkforceandworkplaceandalsoensurespositivereinforcementofsafebehaviors.Asall incidentsarecausedbyunsafeactsandunsafeconditions,theSMILEprocessdealswithidentificationandrectificationofthese.Thisprogramisrunbysupervisorsoffshoreandisbackedwithappropriateincentivestoparticipantsasatokenofappre-ciation.PersonallyIfeelthateverySMILEcardwrittenaftergivingtherightfeedbacktothepersoninvolvedismonumentalasitensuresthatONEpersonissafelyreturnedbacktohisfamily.
OvertheyearsIhaveseenthatHSEisbecomingmoreandmoreofalinemanagementresponsibilityanddoesnotexistas“OnlyHSEofficer’sjob”Asfarasthiscontinues,wecanseetheZEROaccidentssunrisingoverthehorizon.

Infactwehavejustreached900,000man-hourswithoutanyre-portableaccidents. Year2009&2010,wehavesuccessfully launchedandimplemented“HandsandFingerSafety”and“HeightSafety”campaignrespectively.Thisyear,wearesettocommence“HazardsintheWorkplaceAware-ness.”Asidefromthis,wewillalsobeparticipatingintheSafetyIn-novationTeam(SIT)ConventionbyAssociationofSingaporeMarineIndustries(ASMI).AfirstforNSE,wehavehighhopesoflearningfromsomeofthemajorplayersintheindustryandatthesametimeshar-ingourbestsafetypracticesandcomingupwithpracticalandeffec-tivesolutionstoincreaseproductivityandreducecost.Asourteam’sfocusthisyearisinidentifyinghazardsattheworkplace,ourinnova-tionproject in thisconventionnaturallydealswith thesmarterandfasterwayofriskassessmentonsite. SingaporeWorkplaceSafetyandHealthCouncilhasselectedNSEasthepilotcompanyintheWSHAdvocateProgram.Theprogramen-couragesemployeestopromoteworkplacehealthandsafetyandin-culcatethismindsettoalllevelsintheorganization.Wehavealreadyinductedtheadvocatesor“influencers”andtheyhavebeenconduct-ingsafetybriefings. Wehavealsoachievedthe“bizSafePartner”statuswhichisastrongaffirmationofoursupporttoWSHandthiscertificationisarecogni-tionbytheindustryofNSE’scommitmenttothesafetyandhealthofourworkersandsubcontractors.

For instance, as Lesson Learnt fromBSPProjects,wehavecreatedandweuseourown“Top-De-partChecklist” forallourProjects.ThisdocumenthelpsustoensurethatallmobilizationissueshavebeenmanagedincompliancewithIMCA(InternationalMarineContractorsAs-sociation)andOGP(InternationalAssociationofOilandGasProducers).This“Top-Depart”actsasaQHSEInternalAudit. WecanreachSustainableDevelopment&PerformanceonlyifeveryonewithintheCompany,notonlytheso-called“HSEGuys”,conceiveandliveapartofher/hisjobasanOccupa-tionalHealthProfessional.TheInternationalCodeofEthicsforOccupationalHealthProfessionalshasbeenupdatedin2002by the International CommissiononOccupationalHealth. Iwould like toquoteonestatementof thisCode:“Itcannotbeoveremphasized thatethics inoccupationalhealth isbyessenceafieldofmanypartners.Goodoccupationalhealthisinclusive,notexclusive.”Awiderangeofdisciplinesarecon-cernedwithHSE since it is and interfacebetween technol-ogyandhealthinvolvingtechnical,medical,social,financialandlegalaspects.ThetrendistomobilizethecompetenceofeveryTechnician/Specialist/AssistantwithintheframeworkofamultidisciplinaryTeamapproach. Ifweagreeonthefactthateveryoneactswithinherorhisfieldof expertiseas “oneof the”OccupationalHealthPro-fessionals,weadmitthatweareboundbyethicalstandardstopractice“DueDiligence.”Then,wemusttakeaproactiveapproachby implementingthe levelsofpreventiondefinedbytheWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)therebyreducingtherisksexposuresoftheWorkerstoAsLowAsReasonablyAchievable(ALARAprinciple)throughconstantvigilanceandeachandeveryone’s concertedefforts. Onevery relevantexampleofmandatorycooperation isthedetection/report-ingandanalysisofnear-misses.Together,wecanavoidthe“next-one”whichcanleadtoamajorinjury. Ibelievethat reachingtheBestPracticesprescribedbytheDueDiligencePrinciple,isachievableinSwiber.Weendeav-ortokeepabreastwiththelatestdevelopmentsinthehealth
andsafetypracticesintheindustrybasedonthestringentguide-linessetbyIMCAandOGP. Enhancementofcompetenciesand trainingsareessentialand inthisregard,IamthankfulthattheSwiberHSEteamsworktogetherandareverysupportiveofeachotherinthis.OneexampleinIndia:Walkingthetalk,Dr.Ganeshconductstrainingswheneverhe’soff-shoreandMr.KirkBrownconductstrainingsonboardtheAthantis,theSupporterand theGlorious.Bothof themareacting for thebenefitofall theCrewMates,Swiber,Kreuz,Subcontractors,Cli-ents... Together,we canaffordthetarget ofzero in-jury, zeroi l l n e s sand zerolongtermill-healtheffect forour Per-sonnel.
Thebasicformulaforsuccessisgettingthebasicsrightandgettingitrightearly.Ifacompanycannotdothesimplethingscorrectlythebiggerissuescouldnevergoright.TheteaminBruneihavebeenfantasticinthattheyhaveembracedasafetyculturethatmayhavebeenforeigntoafewofthem.InBruneiTheHSEcultureisextreme-
ly rigidand forsomeone com-ing into suchasystemitcouldbe a baptismby fire. Initialeffortsofmon-itoring ,mo-tivating andguiding theneophytes by

theopsmanagerhaveallhighstandardswhentheissueofsafetyisonthetable.Anotherkeyfactorhasbeenthepro-fessionalismexhibitedbytheoffshoresafetyteam.Ihavealwayshated the stereotype that safetypersonsareonlythereeithertogetanewpairofsafetyglassesforsome-oneorwhenanincidentoccurs.Theoffshoresafetyteamhasraisedthebarontherequirementsbybeingassertivewhen required and being professional guyswith awiderareaofknowledgeandresponsibilities.Theyassistoffshoreandareindispensibletotheteamformostissuessomenotevensafetyrelated. Inthepastcoupleofyearsthesafetyteamhasmovedfrombeingseenas“USvs.them”.ThefactthatwecarrysafetyManagerorcoordinatorasatitledoesnotnecessarilygiveus a place on at the decisionmaking table. Participationforushasbeenearnedbydemonstrating thevalue thatwebring.Thesinglemosteffectivewaythishasbeenac-complished isbydemonstratinghowsafetycan notonlyprotectworkersbutcontributetothelongtermsustainablegoalsofthecompany.Acompanycaneithergotwowayswithsafetytheirsafetymanagementsystem.Theycanei-therwantasystemthatjustmeetstheKPI’ssetbythecli-ent(tickingtheboxesattheendofthemonth)orsecondlytheycangofurtherandprovideasystemthatgoespastthebasicrequirementstoprotecttheinterestoftheirworkers. Ourchallengessofarhavebeenmet.Butthisisnotatimetolookbackatwhatwedidandsaythiswillworktomor-rowandrestonourlaurels.Wemustkeepreinventingandmonitoring–alwayslookingtoupgradeandbetterthelastyear.Safetyshouldneverbeabout“fingerscrosswehopeitworks”(althoughitcan’thurtnotto)buthavingconfidenceintheplanningandincorporationofsafeworkingmethodsintoallthatwedo.

What is inspiration?Inspirationisexperiencedasafeelingorsensation that leavesusmotivated tomove into action.Wemayhavereadacompellingstoryofheroism, listenedtoanextraordinaryguitarist,orseenamovingpovertyreportonthechildren inAfricaandfromdeepwithinourcore,wefeelanurgetoact.Wefeelwewanttodosomething,evenifitisread-ingmoresimilarbooks,furtherlistening,orperhapsdonatingsomemoneytohelpthechildreninAfrica.
Where does inspiration come from?Inspirationcomesfromaplacedeepwithinusthatfeelsconnectedtotheperson,placeoropportunity,whichispresentingitself.Somethingwithinusgets triggered,somethingresonateswithinusandthere isafeelingoffamiliarityaboutit.Perhapsitwasthereminderofachild-hooddreamoranintuitive“hit”,whichtellsus“thatissomethingIwouldliketodo”or“Icouldbedoingthat.”
How do I live an inspired life?Totrulyliveaninspiredlife,weneedtobeverysureaboutwhatitiswewanttoHAVEinourlives.Bydefiningwhatwewanttohaveorwhowewanttobe-come,weareeffectivelyvisualisingtheendresult.Soinsteadofplottingforward,weplotbackwardsfromwhatwevisualizewealreadyhaveorhavebecomeinourlives.
Thenweneed todeterminewhoweneed toBE inorder tohavethat.Thebeingnessesweassumewillhaveallthequali-ties,expertise,experienceorcapabilitiesofahighlysuccessfulpersonwhohasalreadyachievedtheendresultweseek.Forinstance,ifwewantmorepeaceinourworld,wewouldneed to BE peace and what would peace look like?Well itwould not be violence, hate,war or terrorism, but itwouldbecompassion,understanding,tranquility,peacefulness,har-mony,etc.
IfwewanttohaveaNewYorkTimesBestSellingbook,thenwhatwouldweneedtoBE?Well,forastartwewouldneedtobedetermined,focused,disciplined,awriter,persistent,posi-tive,andskilled,etc.WhenwesortoutwhatweneedtoBEineachoftheareaswewanttoHAVEinourlives,thenthetasksbecomeseasier,becausefromourBEINGNESSES,flowourac-tionsorDOINGNESSES.
