Three Categories: 1) Metals:

Usually shiny

Malleable and ductile

Conducts heat and electricity.

Shown in Blue!!

2) Nonmetals:• Colorful, can be

dull

• Brittle, Hard or Soft

• Poor Conductors

• .

Shown in Yellow!!

3) Metalloids:

- have properties of both metals and nonmetals.

Ex. Silicon - Shiny-Not malleable or ductile-Brittle-Poor conductors compared to metals but better than nonmetals.

Shown in Pink!!

MetalloidsSometimes called the “stairstep elements”

We will be memorizing them!Boron (B)Silicon (Si)Germainium (Ge)Arsenic (As)Antimony (Sb)Tellerium (Te)Astatine (At)

The Periodic TableSWBAT: -Classify elements into families-Describe the characteristics of each family

Page 10: SWBAT: Understand how the periodic table is arranged Period 3 Bellringer

Families on the Periodic Table

Columns are also grouped into families.

Families may be one column, or several columns put together.

Families have names rather than numbers. (Just like your family has a common last name.)

Page 11: SWBAT: Understand how the periodic table is arranged Period 3 Bellringer

Alkali Metals1st column on the periodic table (Group 1) not including hydrogen.

(Colored Orange)

Very reactive metals, always combined with something else in nature (like in salt).

Soft enough to cut with a butter knife

Page 12: SWBAT: Understand how the periodic table is arranged Period 3 Bellringer

Alkaline Earth Metals

Second column on the periodic table. (Group 2)

Colored Yellow

Reactive metals that are always combined with nonmetals in nature.

Several of these elements are important mineral nutrients (such as Mg and Ca

Transition Metals

Elements in groups 3-12

Colored Pink

Less reactive harder metals

Includes metals used in jewelry and construction.

Metals used “as metal.”

Page 14: SWBAT: Understand how the periodic table is arranged Period 3 Bellringer

HalogensElements in group 17

(Colored green)

Very reactive, volatile, diatomic, nonmetals

Always found combined with other element in nature .

Used as disinfectants and to strengthen teeth.

The Noble Gases

Elements in group 18

Colored Blue

VERY unreactive, monatomic gases

Used in lighted “neon” signs

Used in blimps to fix the Hindenburg problem.
