Useful guide to securing that dream jobTHE economy is warming up and more jobsare being advertised but will you be able tograb one or will you fall at the first hurdle?

Ross Porter, owner of Gwent recruitmentbusiness Clear Sky Recruitment, has high-lighted some common mistakes job seekersmake when applying for jobs and attendinginterviews.

The first of these errors is failure to tailoryour CV and introductory letter or email tothe specific job in question.

Making your CV too long and detailed is an-other no no. One page, two sides, is perfectlyadequate to get all the salient points across.Indeed, Ross says, many recruiters faced witha forest of applications will already haveformed their opinion after reading just thefirst third of the first page.

Not enough keywords. If a CV is electroni-cally searched it must include key words.Many businesses are using technology tohelp with an initial sift. If the key words theyrequire, directly associated to the positionthey need to fill, are absent, your carefullycrafted CV could well be missed.

A CV is devised to help you to get aninterview and after that initial foot in thedoor you are half way to getting the job.However don’t, under any circumstances, lieon your CV or be economical with the truth.For example if you have a big gap in youremployment history don’t fill with fibs but beprepared to explain why there were gaps.

Don’t include irrelevant information suchas hobbies or interests unless they addweight to your application. An applicationfor a job with an IT firm would be bolsteredwith some evidence of out of work interestsin computers, for example, making you moresuitable for the role.

There is no excuse for any spelling errors inCV or letters or, for that matter, poor time-keeping. If you are sloppy with spelling andlate for interview it will be assumed that ishow you work.

Be friendly and courteous to all you meet.If you were rude to the receptionist it couldruin your chances as employers often canvasother employee’s views. Be positive at alltimes but don’t be over familiar. Just because

the interviewer appears laid back doesn’tmean they aren’t judging your every move

Although salary is crucial, talking aboutmoney before you have passed the first stageis a mistake. Research the company thor-oughly and talk about the firm’s structure,

direction and your ability to fit in and to addvalue

Do all the above and you will have givenyourself a good chance of landing the job.
