Women wont apply to certain jobs aswording puts them off, says researchTHE wording of an employment ad can be acrucial factor as to whether the job goes to awoman or a man as women tend not to ap-ply in certain cases.They feel less inclined to respond to adscontaining frequently used words like deter-mined and assertive because such wordsare linked with male stereotypes.This is one of the findings of a research pro-

ject in which scientists from the TechnischeUniversitt Mnchen studied how leaders areselected and assessed.They also gleaned some important knowledgeabout the role of emotions, debunking the cli-ch that leaders are more successful if theyregularly show anger towards their team.

We dont have many women in managementroles because we get so few good applicants companies can be heard lamenting this stateof affairs with increasing frequency.

Just an excuse? Scientists from the TUMhave discovered something that actually doesdeter women from applying for a job, even ifthey are qualified: the wording of the job ads.

The scientists showed some 260 test subjectsfictional employment ads. These included, forexample, a place in a training programme forpotential management positions.

If the advertisement described a large num-ber of traits associated with men, the womenfound it less appealing and were less inclinedto apply.

Such traits include assertive, independ-ent, aggressive and analytical.

Women found words like dedicated,responsible, conscientious and sociablemore appealing.

For male test subjects, on the other hand,the wording of the job advertisement madeno difference.

A carefully-formulated job posting is es-sential to get the best choice of personnel,says Professor Claudia Peus from the Chairof Research and Science Management, whoheaded the s tudy.

In most cases, it doesnt make sense to sim-ply leave out all of the male-sounding phras-es. But without a profile featuring at leastbalanced wording, organisations are robbingthemselves of the chance of attracting goodfemale applicants. And thats because the ste-reotypes endure almost unchanged in spiteof all of the societal transformation we haveexperienced.

Whether women are believed to have thewill to lead others depends largely on the

emotions they show.This is one of the findings expounded at an

interim presentation of the project last year.The team of scientists has since studied the

role of emotions in how leaders are judged inmore detail:

Bosses need to display anger from time totime in order to assert themselves or so theprevailing belief goes. In a bid to examine

the validity of this clich, the scientistsshowed more than 500 test subjects videos orscenarios, in words and pictures, of a leadersummarising a bad business year to em-ployees. The superiors showed either anger,sadness or no emotions.

The way the test subjects saw it, the angrybosses drew their power predominantly fromthe threat of penalties and by emphasisingtheir status.

They obtained less power by showing theirappreciation for others than did the leaderswho displayed sadness or emotions. Angrysuperiors thus lost out on an interpersonallevel. Consequently, the test subjects would beless loyal to the angry managers and wouldrather attempt to thwart them in their inten-tions.

As a Telesales Executive you will need to be self motivated and
