Project Overview
• Solid Boom to transport a shuttle 50 feet across a river/lake/valley…
• Whole assembly must fit in 2 backpacks and weigh below 100 lbs
• The system must be assembled quickly and easily by 2 people
• The system is designed to be used in rugged terrain, affordable, and fool proof.

Three Boom Piece Options
– Uneven I-Beam (5/8” x ½” x 1 ¼” x 1/16”)• Advantages:
– Reduced weight– More room for the shuttle to straddle– Easy stringing
• Disadvantage:– Thin web bends under torque
– T-Beam ( 1” x 1” x 1/8” )• Advantages
– Easy stringing• Disadvantages:
– Harder connection of multiples– Pipe ( O.D. 75” x Thickness 1/8” )
• Advantages:– Least weight– Easier multiple connection– Wire can be run through the middle in case of
a multiple failing• Disadvantages
– Hard to string

Final Boom Piece Configuration
Size:
24 pieces, 2 ft long, ¾” OD
- We chose this pipe to accommodate for the shuttle sizes available, to cables inside, and to be able to fit in a backpack
Connection:
- The head of each bar will snap into the tail of the next bar

Tripod
Manfrotto – Avenger A-128 Ultra Low Boy Stand
Max Height: 29 inMax Load : 66 lbMin Height: 19 inFolded Height: 22.8 inWeight: 8.2 lbColumn Tube Diameter: 35, 30 mmPrice: $152
We chose this tripod for its price and because it can fit in a backpack
We should have this tripod soon !!!!

Base (Boom Assembly Housing)
Ball BearingsEach of the multiple pieces will be slid through the base when assembling the boom
Although it may be more expensive, we will buy the housing now, rather that spending time to design and build a new one

Shuttle
The shuttle is made of the same material as the base, but is smaller
The aluminum housing makes customization of the shuttle and base easy
Sustainable (Backpack) NIMS
Shuttle Movement
Designing a simple method to transport the shuttle from one end of the boom to the other
Two Cranks (Green): One to move the shuttle, and one to move the node
The inner wheel (brown) has a circumference of 1ft, allowing one turn of the handle to move the shuttle/node 1ft
We are currently finding out how best to string this all together

Base Rotation
• Constraints and Goals– Small enough to fit
in backpack– Should not deform
under its load– Angle should be
measured and readable
• Rotation Options:A) Hand rotated
B) Gear rotated

Sustainable (Backpack) NIMS
Base Rotation cont’d
• Gear Rotated– Advantages:
• Precise
• Hand crank mechanical advantate
– Disadvantages:
• More moving parts
• Assembly required in fabrication
• More susceptible wear and tear
• Heavier
• Hand Rotated– Advantages:
• Easy to make
• Easy to adjust
– Disadvantages:
• Less precise
