(Hindustan Times, Sept 14, 2016) India needs a Wikipedia like website on environment

The data on Indian natural environment is not available properly. Government agencies have failed in maintaining environmental data. Most of the data pertaining to the environment is collected by state machinery. Few agencies such as Indian Meteorological department (IMD) and Indian Space Research organization (ISRO) record data on temperature, rainfall and satellite based land cover data responsibly. Other than these two outstanding agencies, other agencies have a no. of shortcomings as far as data on environment is concerned viz. Failure in maintaining records, Unreliable and Falsified information, Failure in making information publically available, Failure in getting public participation on generating information. A central repository on the environmental data is of immense significance which can provide real time information.
