To fellow esnrs, dear friends, this is an im-portant event for our section! The Templars might have had many se-crets, but their connection with Tomar was not one of them. To understand one is to understand the other. The city, cas-tle and monastery we know today were founded by gualdim pais, their leader and grand-master, as the Headquarters of the Templar Order in 1160.Legends talk of the treasures brought by the Templars from all around Europe, who were being hunted after the Or-der’s extinction in 1314, and found safe refuge here in tomar. So if you happen to find the Holy Grail while you’re here, remember: esn tomar is always open for donations!

WANT MAJESTIC MONUMENTS?Look no further. This castle was first the main defender of the tejo line that pro-tected everything north of the river during the Reconquista and then, the grounds of the convent/headquarters of the monk-knights templars. After the templars were turned into the order of christ (#portuguesestyle) the convent was expanded and became much of what we know today. Inside you can find some of the greatest pieces of art found in portugal. What about a church built after the holy sepulchre church in jerusalem? Or a showcase of grandiose nanueline style on a single win-dow? Or even hidden symbols of ancient alchemists?

IF YOU’RE INTO THIS STUFF, THIS IS YOUR SPOT!

A whole forest planted by monks... Now that’s something promising! It’s the biggest national green area in tomar and for sure it’s most beautiful.Inside you’ll find some peace and quiet (crl can be tough), perhaps in one of the many places and fountains the monks used to meditate like “charotinha”, a min-iature of the one at the convent, or the fountain of blood. Try to find the tanks that connected the water to the castle or even the reason why the water only flows during a certain part of the year.

The heart and central meeting point of the city. This square came to be as a part of the progressive straight streets design tomar has (especially when considering this is a medieval city). In and around “the square”, as people call it, are many of the main coffes. In the centre you can pay respect to the founder of our dearest city.

|| TIP - Ask a local about the secret of the statue.Trust us, you won’t regret it!

Tomar has an enormous variety of churches. From the church of st. john the baptist in the republic square, filled with unique art work from the portuguese renascence, to the oldest, the church of st. mary of the olive grove where gualdim pais rests. With so much templar symbolism and legends, one would have to spend a whole day inside to find it all out (no exaggeration). There are also many chapels with amazing tilled walls and breath-taking courtyard views.

Tomar is an easy city to navigate. The city is divided into the old town west of the river and the new side on the east. The train and the bus stations arelocated on the west side, a 5 minute walk to republic square. Right next to these stations there are also wide parking spots. The city’s historical centre is mainly composed of perpendicular streets, so it’s easy to find your way.IPT’s Campus is on the East side of the city, about 30 min walk from republic square, 10 min by car.
