The Daily News of TV Sales Friday, December 7, 2018 OWNERS UPBEAT ABOUT REVENUE GROWTH Most small-business owners surveyed by GfK for Bank of America are expecting to close out 2018 with year-over-year revenue growth. What’s more, the enthusiasm continues for 2019 in the semi-annual survey, with more small businesses indicating they have plans to hire and expand in 2019. While the majority of small-business owners are pleased with the economy’s direction, they say they’re confronted with the challenge of finding qualified talent in one of the hottest job markets in half a century. The report, based on a survey of 1,000 U.S. small-business owners, reveals that 80 percent of entrepreneurs are confident their 2018 year-end revenue will exceed that of 2017. Several business growth indicators are also up year-over-year, including revenue expectations and expansion and hiring plans — which have peaked to their highest levels in three years. Over the next 12 months, 57 percent of business owners believe their revenue will increase (vs. 51 percent in fall 2017). Sixty-seven percent plan to expand (vs. 59% a year earlier); and 27 percent plan to hire (vs. 16%). In the latest survey, 55 percent were confident the national economy will improve (vs. 46% in fall 2017) and 54 percent expressed similar confidence in their local economies (vs. 48%). Of particular interest to the survey sponsor, Bank of America, 15 percent of the small-business owners intend to apply for a loan in the next 12 months (vs. 8% in fall 2017). “Small-business owners are eager to expand their businesses and take advantage of a healthy economy,” said Sharon Miller, BofA’s head of small business. “While we are seeing an increase in hiring plans and loan applications, today’s competitive job market has created a challenging environment to attract and retain small-business talent.” As business owners make plans to hire in the year ahead, they acknowledge that identifying and retaining employees has become a significant challenge. In the last year, turnover affected 24 percent of all small businesses — with 11 percent losing 10 percent or more of their entire workforce. Among those who sought to hire new employees, half say the tightening labor market had a direct impact on their ability to find and hire qualified candidates. In line with the increased optimism business owners expressed regarding their economic and business outlook, they also expressed lower levels of concern about a variety of economic factors that impact their business. The top economic issues concerning business owners are: health care costs (63% vs. 72% in fall 2017); interest rates (44% vs. 43%); and trade policies (43%; issue not surveyed in 2017). MOBILE BANKING’S GROWTH IS SLOWING DOWN This year, 115.6 million mobile phone users in the U.S. will bank on mobile at least once per month, according to eMarketer estimates. Growth, however, will slow through the end of the forecasting period — from 6.6 percent by the end of 2018 to just 3 percent in 2022. “Growth is slowing because mobile banking has reached near saturation among younger consumers,” said eMarketer forecasting analyst Cindy Liu. “While penetration is still very low with older individuals, they are just not interested in mobile banking for numerous reasons.” Privacy and security are among the key factors driving decelerated mobile banking growth. Mass data breaches from companies like Equifax, JPMorgan Chase, and most recently Marriott, have made consumers — especially older ones — even more hesitant to trust anyone with their financial information. Limited functionality with mobile banking is another factor. An April 2018 survey from Morning Consult found that for the most part, internet users in the U.S. will check an account or a balance, or pay their bills online. “Beyond these activities, there really aren’t more banking features that consumers can access via mobile,” Liu said. Like with peer-to-peer payments (P2P), millennials are banking on their mobile phones at a much higher rate than older generations. eMarketer estimates that there will be 50.3 million millennial mobile phone banking users in the U.S. by the end of 2018. In contrast, it expects 31.5 million Gen Xers to bank on mobile, and 17.6 million boomers to do so as well.
