What is S.U.R.F.?
• SURF started in 1992 with an NSF grant to UAF
• In 1994, State of Arkansas continued the program with central administration
• In 2005, ADHE began administering SURF
• Develops undergraduate academic research at Arkansas colleges & universities
• Funds student in-depth research projects
• Funds faculty mentors to help students learn and grow
What does S.U.R.F. do?

• All disciplines are eligible and encouraged to apply
• Science, engineering and mathematics majors may research a basic science topic
• A philosophy major may explore an area of bioethics
• An art major might sculpt a major project
• A nursing student could examine a clinical problem or survey a patient population

- How will you be involved?
- How many hours per week will you devote toyour project?
- Include a time schedule for your funding period
- Include expected month-to-monthaccomplishments
- Devote perhaps 25% of your proposal to background information regarding your project
