By Rick Mullen | Broom, Brush & Mop Associate Editor

The recent recession was another rough patch for broommanu facturing in the United States, which began tochange rapidly after the passage of NAFTA (NorthAmerican Free Trade Agreement of 1994).

Broom, Brush & Mop Magazine recently spoke withexecutives from three U.S. broom manufacturers whoserespective companies have stood the test of time andhave found ways to prosper despite negative market forces.

While NAFTA, market forces and otherfactors have caused the demise ofmany companies in the broom

manufacturing segment over the years, NewtonBroom & Brush Co., of Newton, IL, has notonly survived and prospered, but is alsocelebrating its 100th birthday this year.

“Business has been up and I’m fairly optimisticabout 2014,” Newton Broom & Brush ownerDon Leventhal said.

The company’s longevity means it was around during the heyday of theindustry in the 20th century when so much broom corn was grown inCentral Illinois that it was known as the “Broom Corn Capital of theWorld.” Today, as a testament to those times, the annual Broom CornFestival in Arcola, IL, attracts thousands of visitors.

The company’s offerings now include broom corn brooms, railroadswitch brooms, angle brooms, soft sweep brooms, cob web and fandusters, and a complete line of push brooms and floor brushes, as well asbowl brushes, kitchen and scrub brushes.

Leventhal has described Newton Broom & Brush as primarily a brushcompany as the staple set push brooms and upright brooms itmanufactures are essentially brushes with handles. Staple set broombristles are typically fibers such as palmyra and polypropylene, ratherthan broom corn.

“We have some niche items that we sell and do well with, but the mainportion of our business is in OEM and contract manu facturing,”Leventhal said. “We still make a few broom corn brooms. Broom cornprices are crazy high. Tampico has also been very difficult to acquire.Prices for wood handles, plastic fiber and molded parts have been fairlysteady.

“We get a few handles domestically, but most of them come fromBrazil. We use tauari hardwood handles out of Brazil. We make a heavyindustrial broom and that heavy, hardwood handle is an advantage.”

Leventhal purchased the company in 2005.“At the time (2005), the overriding issue wasn’t domestic competition,

it was definitely China,” Leventhal said. “In those days, Chinese com -

panies would quote the price of a product as a finished good in a box forwhat our material costs were running.”

While the Chinese had the upper hand, especially in the manufacture ofsmall household brushes, Leventhal explained, U.S. companies continuedmaking larger, heavier push brooms, which were more expensive to bringin from China. However, in recent years, market forces have leveled theplaying field somewhat.

“Their (Chinese) labor has gone up and they now have inflation wherewe (United States) have very little,” Leventhal said.

Leventhal has seen evidence that some of the manufacturing that wentoverseas is coming back onshore.

“We have customers who have come back after being away for threeor four years,” he said. “We still have the equipment to produce the items, and they can order what they need and receive it in a much more timelymanner. They don’t have to order a container load only to find when itarrives they are unhappy with the quality. This is one of the reasons I amoptimistic. I see more manufacturing coming back. It feels more positivewhereas before it was just a downhill slope.”

Another sign that domestic manufacturing is growing, Leventhal said,is what is happening in the U.S. wood handle market.

“Wood handles are mainly for jan/san and industrial use. You mostlysee only metal handles in the retail market,” he explained. “Now, thereare wood handles being produced domestically with American wood andI don’t think that has happened for 60 years.”

Newton Broom & Brush maintains a raw material inventory to be ableto respond quickly to fill customers’ orders. While company employeesstill wind a few mops and brooms, most of the work is automated to acertain degree.

“Brush machines are computer controlled, but they are not robotic,”

Leventhal said. The company also employs some eco-friendly practices in its day-to-

day operations.“We try and use everything,” Leventhal said. “We recycle items from

office waste paper to plastic bottles. We bale cardboard and reuse certainboxes. We are very conscience of our electric and gas usage. Thatcompany has also completed projects like insulating and installing betterlighting.”

Today, Newton Broom & Brush has a workforce of about 16 people, a

“The technology and quality of the

ZAHORANSKY machines perfectly

meet the quality standards we demand for our toothbrushes. An additional

plus is their easy operation and maintenance, which ensure a smooth pro-

duction process. In the meantime, we have attained great success through-

out China with our brand Frog®.”

smaller number of employees than in the past, Leventhal said. The lowernumber of employees is a result of going through recent recessionarytimes.

“When some companies go through tough times, they tighten theirbelts and become more efficient, which is what we did,” Leventhal said.“I think this is why the market is up, as companies are in better shapehaving gone through tough times.”

Leventhal said the company’s mostly veteran employees are crucial tothe company’s success.

“One of the biggest challenges is finding the right employee to do thejob. Certain people enjoy running a machine and keeping up that pace. Itrequires someone who has a work ethic and who comes to workeveryday,” he said. “We have an aging employee base here and it seemswe have a problem finding young people to do this kind of work. They(employees) have years of experience and, in our type of small business, skilled, experienced employees are very important.”

One of the foundational principles that has stood the test of time inhelping to ensure Newton Broom & Brush’s success is the effort toprovide the best in customer service. Offering quality products is a vitalcog in the company’s customer service program

“As a small company we are very dependent upon our suppliers toprovide us with the right quality materials,” Leventhal said. “Some ofthe big companies are very vertical and they make their own materials. We can try and control the quality of the work done here and ourequipment, but we are dependent on suppliers to give us the rightquality materials. To produce a quality product is an ongoing challengethat we are meeting.”

Founded in 1925, Quinn Broom Works,Inc., of Greenup, IL, has survived theGreat Depression of the 1930s and the

recent recession and remains one of the fewU.S. companies making broom corn brooms.According to company President MarkQuinn, it is the only domestic manufacturerdoing business solely in broom corn brooms fordomestic distribution, and has been for the pastthree decades.

The company’s location in Central Illinois put it in the hotbed ofbroom corn cultivation and manufacturing during the previous century, which essentially ended with the passage of NAFTA. Prior to NAFTA,Quinn Broom Works was enjoying some of the highest sales in itshistory; however, a significant portion of that business went awayafterwards. Now the company operates on a much smaller scale.

Quinn described business lately as “slow.” He also said it hasbecome difficult in recent times to get a handle on where the market isgoing from day-to-day.

“We see spikes once in a while and I think the reason we see thespikes is the fact that the economy pushes a little bit here and there, such as in the spring. I think everybody across the board, whereverthey are in the stick goods market, sees a little bit more of an upturnthis time of year,” Quinn said. “I don’t think there is anybody out therewho can truthfully dictate, particularly in the broom business, howsales are changing. Many times customers just react to you and youreact to them and there is not the feel today that we had decades ago.

“As we have transitioned over time in how business was done, it hasalmost become impossible for anybody in the stick goods game to justsay, ‘This is how the business flows.’ We react as to how our customersplace their orders and sometimes it is a little bit unforeseen. It is verytough in any business segment for manufacturers of finished goods to

Mark Quinn

Page 11: SUPPLIERS DIRECTORY
Page 12: SUPPLIERS DIRECTORY

be able to plan.”Quinn said it is especially challenging for companies importing

products from outside the United States to plan ahead.“These companies must bring in whatever they need way ahead of time

because they don’t have any other recourse,” Quinn said. “It may bemonths down the road when the next container arrives. I don’t thinkanyone can honestly say he or she knows how the market will play out inthe near future — it is a pretty tough call today.”

Quinn Broom Works’ broom corn broom lineup includes whisk, toy, lobby, household, warehouse and janitor brooms, as well as itsKitchenette line. The company began manufacturing this patented broomin 1948 for the Joseph Lay Company of Portland, IN. In 1986, Quinn

Broom Works acquired all rights for the Kitchenette trademark.“Wound brooms are wound by tension on a broom winder, which is

hand intensive work,” Quinn said. “Kitchenette products are stamp pressbrooms. Our primary business today is in the jan/san industry, but ourproducts can be seen in other market segments as well, such as in ahardware and grocery store. We are also an OEM manufacturer as othercompanies look for us to be their vendor of the corn brooms theypromote. We do make some plastic and nail brooms, but they account for

less that 1 percent of our total sales.”In modern times, almost all the broom corn used in

domestic production is grown in Mexico. In recentyears, drug wars and drought in Mexico where broomcorn is grown has caused higher prices and has impactedthe availability of the raw material. The drug violencehas also made it more difficult to keep channels ofcommunication open between U.S. companies and theMexican broom corn players.

“We do not have communication today like we haddecades ago working all the way to the broom cornfarmer,” Quinn said. “As a result, indications are verysketchy for how much broom corn will be available inthe next crop in Mexico, which is vital for the Mexicanand the U.S. manufacturers. More information is usuallyavailable after the first of July as results of the mainharvest begin to become known.”

When it comes to customer service, Quinn BroomWorks has traditionally taken pride in providing highquality products with a personal touch.

“We are still a very hands-on company,” Quinn said.“We are still that family company that deals on a verypersonable basis.”

According to Quinn, probably one of the biggestchallenges that companies deal with in today’smarketplace is the degrading of quality levels when itcomes to raw materials.

“I would give anything to have the raw materialcomponent parts to make a broom and package it thatwere available when I was younger,” Quinn said.“During the past handful of years, I have battled theproblem of getting quality materials from my suppliers

across the board. The suppliers themselves cannot obtain the qualitymaterials. Their backs are up against the wall, too. I feel sorry for themand I understand their heartache.

“The sad fact is this is true in the world marketplace for mostcommodities. We have become a disposable society. If something fallsapart, most people just say, “So what,’ and go out and buy a new one. These people and those who buy strictly on price have always been thereand will never change. However, there are people who still want quality, which is what we strive to provide.”

Quinn told of a study he did about 10 years ago. For about three yearshe looked at the number of components the company rejected due to poorquality.

“The amount of rejects in that short period of time was higher than thetotal of the three previous decades,” he said. “We do the best that we canwith what we have. It is a challenge while we are trying to put the word‘quality’ with our name out to the public.”

Quinn Broom Works’ 15 employees, including Quinn, are cross-trainedto work at various jobs throughout the operation when a need arises.Quinn said some of the employee’s have been with the company for manyyears. Some are members of the same family and some are relatives offormer employees.

“The majority of employees live fewer than 15 miles from our facility,”Quinn said.

Quinn praised his father, Kenneth Quinn, who worked for thecompany for 67 years, for having faith in him as he grew up in theindustry. Kenneth Quinn’s parents, Dewey and Frona Quinn, foundedthe company.

During his career, Kenneth Quinn participated in lobbying efforts tohelp maintain government protection concerning broom corn broomimports. He was co-founder with Everette Hatcher Jr. (then of theChickasaw Broom Company of Memphis, TN) of the annual NationalBroom & Mop Meeting. This group played a crucial role in the correction

of errors in broom duties when the Harmonized Tariff Schedule wasadopted in 1998. It was also involved in lobbying efforts when NAFTAwas being negotiated.

Mark Quinn was co-chairman of the 2010 National Broom & MopMeeting.

“I have always been a team player,” Quinn said. “I look back at somany individuals I was very lucky to be affiliated with as a kid in thisindustry. I feel very, very fortunate. I remember the time and effort it tookfor my father to take me around the United States. He was affiliated withso many good companies and people.”

As a teenager, Quinn learned about machinery and spent time at abroom manufacturing company in Baltimore.

“As a teenager, I learned how to bale broom corn in Lindsay, OK,”Quinn said. “I grew up saying, ‘What can I learn? How can I do that? Letmy try.’ The last thing I learned to do at our facility was to make a broom.I learned everything else first, and then I learned how to make a broom. In other words, I wanted to understand everything about the operationbefore I stepped up on a machine.”

The announcement of the merger of bothyour companies was certainly an historicalevent of grand scale for our industry. Whatprompted the start of the discussions thatfinally led to both of you joining forces andwho approached whom?

Enzo: This is not at all the result of bigstrategic studies prepared by someconsultant, but rather the result of somereflections of two colleagues who, in theirhearts and their thoughts, do like to buildmachinery for their customers in the brushindustry. And these reflections led to theconclusion that a smart combination of bothour entities creates tremendous potential forboth our companies, our employees, and ofcourse our customers. To be frank, after thevery first meeting Bart and I knew we wantedto do this. And if you ask me why, well, theanswer is: “Because we want this”. It is aonce in a lifetime opportunity for both of us.

What is the structure of the merger and whoare the shareholders that have a stake in thenew company?

Bart: This is not a very complex merger. Infact, it is very easy: the basic principle isequality amongst partners. Both the Belgianand Italian entities of our Group have thesame shareholders. To be honest, the legalstructure of the Group was one of the smaller

issues in the total scope of events. Most ofour time we spent talking about machinesand especially about new developments.

What do you hope to accomplish with thismerger?

Bart: We want to combine the 150 years ofexperience we together have in this industry, into one company, with all 420 employeesand to the advantage of all our stakeholders.

Will any of the operations at either locationbe shut down? Will you consolidate anypositions?

Enzo: We look for opportunities, not fordisruptive situations. Both of our companieshave their own strengths. We want to learnfrom each other and concentrate on the bestof both worlds. The aim is not to close orshut down things. Of course we will look howand where we can improve our organization, but always keeping very strong focus on ourcustomers. Also, we are very happy to be able

to start this new era of cooperation with wellfilled order books both in Italy as well as inBelgium, which allows us to focus our energyon what’s important.

Do you see potential for growth from themerger?

Enzo: We are active in a niche-market and

that market is tough. Growing in such asituation is a challenge. That is why, in fact, this will be one of the most important andfirst topics we will concentrate on together.

How do the entities intend to work together?

Bart: It is obvious we will each keep ourstrengths and specialisms as they are. Eachentity will keep its own identity and will keepusing its own name, but always with a link tothe Boucherie-Borghi Group, to which weboth belong.

What about the language barriers?

Bart: This is indeed a challenge. But at theother hand, we see a lot of companies doingbusiness in the Far East where languagebarriers of a much greater magnitude existand still they are very successful. Nobodycomplains about these language issues.Anyway, I believe this will be a short termissue when I see that some of our peoplealready have installed language courses ontheir iPads. And after all, all our peoplespeak the language of the brush-maker andthat is a universal language! I have to admitthat after one or the other meeting, Ipromised Enzo that I was going to take acrash-course in Italian. I am afraid he mayhold me to that. (smiles)

Below: Experts sharing technical opinions: Paolo Pellicciari and VittorioPini of Borghi with Kris Geldof and Bart Boucherie Jr. of Boucherie.

How will you overcome the fact that just yesterday you were stillcompetitors?

Enzo: Well, let me first of all say that we both share a feeling ofdeep respect for each other’s company and for each other as aperson. Respect is a key factor in making this kind of operation asuccess. But, yes, in the past, we were indeed using our energy tocompete against each other. From now on, we will use ourcombined energy to better satisfy our customers’ needs.Bart: Yes, there is mutual respect. One big advantage is also thatthere is really less overlapping between our machine-programs thanone would think. On the contrary, our machinery lines are verycomplementary.

How will your customers see this merger?

Bart: It is up to us to keep convincing our customers that we arehere to serve them, as we both have done in the past. Customerfocus is very high on our agenda and our permanent concern tomeet our customers’ expectations is one of the reasons behind thisdecision. We are convinced that we can do that in a better way byjoining efforts.

Is there anything else you would like to say about the merger?

Enzo: People may speculate as to who is in control of this mergerand we wish to inform them that this is truly a partnership basedon equality between Boucherie and Borghi. Bart and I, and ourteams, will be in constant communication working together for thebenefit of the Group and our customers. Our customers willcontinue to contact the same people and our teams will be workingtogether to make sure that our customers’ best interests are served.Bart: This is a very big step for both our companies and for allstakeholders in and around both our companies. But, as we say inFlemish, sometimes in life a train stops in the railroad stationunexpectedly, and then you can either jump on it or not.

E-mail: [email protected] Officers: John Williams, President;Andres Becker, Boucherie Latin AmericaProducts: Tufting machines for brooms;household, industrial and personal care brushes, and toothbrushes. Boucherie’s Anchor FreeTechnology has now been re-engineered toallow for the production of household andindustrial brushes without the use of anchors orstaples. The filament and block can be ofdifferent materials. With two filling headsrunning continuously at 650 RPM (1,300 tuftsper minute), brushes with 138 tufts areproduced at the rate of 600 pieces per hour.

The indoor broom that was demonstrated atthe last InterBrush show in Freiburg, Germany, requires a mere 50 percent of the weight inpolypropylene of a regular brush block.Additionally, there are savings in filamentwaste since no trimming is needed and, ofcourse, there is no wire. In this world of highenergy costs and petroleum based materials, such savings cannot be considered trivial. Thesecombined attributes have the potential torevolutionize the brush manufacturing industry.

The TCU-CNC machines are capable ofhandling brushes from nailbrushes to 24-inchbrooms. The modular concept, which permits amachine to be reconfigured for vastly different

brushes, has now been well demonstrated. Moreover, these machines are available frombeing manually loaded all the way to fullyautomated production cells, equipped with fullyautomatic handle feeders and industrial robots.

The TCU-CNC range of machines has beenfurther extended by the introduction of theTCU-SL/CNC and the TCU-T/CNC. The TCU-SL/CNC machine, with its fiber picking systemand 95 mm stroke, is able to run at speeds up to1,000 tufts per minute, even with filaments aslong as 420 mm (16-inches) unfolded. TheTCU-T/CC machine, with long stroke fillingtools that are lined with a ceramic material andsturdy carousel with heavy-duty support in thedrilling and filling stations, is designed forarduous applications with drill sizes to 12 mm,and the use of heavy vegetable fibers.

The newest refinements to the TCU line ofmachines are a faster indexing of the turret, higher speeds of well over 1,400 tufts perminute in some cases and a wider range ofautomation options. The single-header SCUwill handle disk brushes as well as platebrushes, and can be converted to a householdbrush machine in a matter of minutes. Thedouble-header VCU is a high-performanceversatile machine for the production of all kinds

Building on a legacy of innovation, our global team of scientists and development engineers continues to expand the broad range of lament variations we o er for use in premium quality brushes and industrial applications, giving brush manufacturers increasingly greater design exibility. Here are just a few examples of the real-world bene ts of our innovation in action.

Improved cleaning of electronic devicesUsed in a wide variety of consumer products—from computers, televisions and cell phones to clocks, watches and gaming devices—liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are an important part of everyday life. In the past, cleaning the glass panels for LCDs has presented a unique challenge for manufacturers.

Now, manufacturers have an improved product to clean these sensitive surfaces. ey are using brushes made with DuPont™ Tynex® ne laments. Typically used for cosmetic brushes, Tynex® ne laments are strong enough to e ectively remove foreign particles from LCD panels while being gentle enough to prevent damaging the surface. Filaments speci cally developed for this application measure only 0.05 to 0.10 mm in diameter and range from 17 to 20 mm in length. ese laments also provide the necessary chemical resistance to withstand the chemicals used in manufacturing LCD panels.

Helping steel mills increase productivityLike most industries, steel manufacturers are always looking for ways to increase productivity. e emphasis is on getting more square feet of metal through the mill, cleaned and coated faster than ever before. To accomplish this, steel mills are using more aggressive cleaning solutions. e problem is that the cleaning brushes typically used were quickly degrading because many plastics used in the brush laments can’t handle the higher pH level.

e technical resources at DuPont Filaments were able to help solve this problem by adding stabilizers to one of our nylon polymer formulations, e ectively extending the pH range that these laments can be used in. Brushes made with these laments deliver cleaning performance over an improved service life, helping steel manufacturers to achieve higher productivity.

Natural feel, improved performance for cosmetic brushesA growing trend in the cosmetic industry is to discontinue using natural animal hair for brush bristles. e challenge is to nd a lament that combines the touch and feel similar to that of natural bristle with the consistency associated with controlled, advanced production technology.

A er conducting extensive testing with cosmetic brands and makeup artists, DuPont Filaments introduced DuPont™ Natra l® laments. is technology is the result of two unique processes—texturizing and tipping. Texturizing creates a so but structured surface, enabling excellent powder pickup. Tipping alters the end lament, giving it a so feel and optimizing

the release performance. is enables pickup and precise release of even the most di cult powders. Brushes made of DuPont™ Natra l® laments are

now gaining rapid acceptance for use in brushes for applying facial cosmetics.

Better performance and quicker cleanup with water-based paintsWhen manufacturers began changing their paints to water-based formulations, more people began using paintbrushes made with synthetic bristles because the hog bristles traditionally used in paintbrushes lost sti ness in water-based paints. Synthetics such as DuPont™ Tynex®, DuPont™ Chinex® and DuPont™ Orel® brand laments quickly became popular choices. As paint manufacturers continue to improve their water-based formulations by reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) content, increasing solid loadings and decreasing

drying times, there is an ongoing need for increasingly higher performing brushes.

To meet this need, DuPont Filaments continues to innovate and help customize solutions. For example, we developed laments with a sti er cross-section that can push higher viscosity paints more e ciently. We also changed the shapes of the laments so they not only pick up more paint from the can for faster application, but are easier to clean.

Listening to customers helps create innovative solutionsAt DuPont Filaments, we listen intently to our customers and work closely with them to support them in their selection of the right lament to meet their speci c product design requirements.

Usually, it’s a matter of helping to select a lament from our extensive range of laments based materials such as nylon or polyester. Sometimes, the choice may not be obvious because a particular lament is typically associated with another type of industry. Other times, we will create a customized lament solution or develop a new lament, such as DuPont™ Natra l®. Simply stated, we have the experience to help deliver solutions.

And, with locally based technical support, sales and service in DuPont Filaments-Americas, DuPont Filaments-Europe, and DuPont Xingda Filaments, we are uniquely positioned to serve the needs of brush manufacturers and others around the world. Our manufacturing plants, located in Asia, the United States and Europe, are third-party-certi ed, meeting the requirements of ISO 9001:2000.

DUPONT FILAMENTS CONTINUES TO LEAD THE WAY IN INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONSFor more than 70 years, DuPont Filaments has been recognized as a leader in

the development of innovative synthetic fi laments that enable brush manufacturers

to address emerging trends and meet evolving consumer expectations.

All of these single headermachines now run at continuous speeds up to1,000 tufts per minute.

The new concept of the TB5-FM machine isyet another world’s first, according toBoucherie. The filling tool runs on ballbearings, and has very few, and light, movingparts to make it simple to maintain and makethe basic tool virtually wear-free. Futhermore, the machine features reduced handling of theproducts to optimize efficiency and productquality.

For the highest production, Boucherie offersthe double-headed TB32-flexi cell, which canmake up to 70 brushes per minute when the 2filling tools run in parallel, or for complexbrushes with 2 different hole sizes when thefilling tools run sequentially. This flexibility isbuild into the concept of the machine, and canbe used effortlessly.Anchorless Toothbrush Production Lines

and Work Centers: In the field of machineryfor the oral care industry, with the introductionof the AFT/CNC machine, Boucherie clearlyestablished a leadership position in anchorlesstechnology, but with the new AMR machine,Boucherie is making a giant step to bringanchorless toothbrush production to moretoothbrush makers.

The AFT/CNC is the first machine for tuftingtoothbrushes without using anchors. Blocktufts, strip tufts and various combinations of tuftangles widen the range of design options for thetoothbrush heads. The AFT/CNC featuresautomatic handle feeding, Windows-basedCNC controls, and pre-endrounding of bristles. No trimming is required. AFT technology maynow be used to manufacture toothbrushes withtapered filaments. Available too is a lessautomated version of this machine: the AFT/SDline, in which the handle and bristle infeed areaccomplished manually.

The AMR machine also features Boucherie’sin-line pre-endrounding system, and will makethe brushes that are now manufactured oncomplex anchor-set production cells at areduced cost, with a higher endrounding quality, and at least at the same speed.

The AFT-IMT is the world’s first

commercially available in-mould technology forthe production of toothbrushes, according toBoucherie. Pre-endrounded filaments are pickedand arranged in their final configuration prior tobeing transferred into a mold where the brushhead and handle are over-molded to produce thefinished product.IDM Machine: The IDM is a compact

carousel machine for the high-speed productionof inter-dental and mascara brushes. It is nowpossible to produce up to 65 high quality brushesper minute, even while using the smallest wiresizes, since the brush remains in the same clampthroughout the whole production process. TheIDM is available in versions with spool feed ofthe nylon, or with fiber boxes for pre-cutfilaments. An integrated vision system for theautomatic inspection of finished brushes is alsoavailable.Injection Molds: Boucherie produces single

component molds, multi-component molds withmanual or automatic transfer, and multi-component, high cavitation, valve gated, hotrunner stack molds. Boucherie molds are used toproduce a wide range of consumer, medical andengineering products.Packaging Machines: Form, fill and seal

blister packaging machines are available in heatseal and high frequency seal versions fortoothbrush and personal care brushes. They maybe operated as stand-alone machines or integratedinto one or two tufting machines.

Boucherie USA Inc., has been sellingBoucherie brush machines, sophisticated multi-component injection molds and packagingequipment in North, Central and South Americafor more than 30 years. 12

founders Edward Holmes and Ericales Willett Pearson. The company manufactures broom corn brooms as well as household,

janitorial, warehouse, whisk and lobby brooms. Other product offeringsinclude wet and dry mops, broom and mop handles, push brooms, brushes, buckets, wringers and various cleaning accessories.

Born during the Great Depression, the company was no stranger to hardtimes when the recent recession crippled the economy several years ago. While the down economy caused shrinking sales, loyal Crystal Lakecustomers continued to buy from the company, albeit in smaller amounts. Tocounteract smaller orders, the company concentrated on selling new items tocustomers and finding new distributors.

“Business is not too bad right now,” Pearson said. “It has picked up a littlewith the traditional spring push. We are continuing to expand our productlines into more cleaning items, brushes, buckets and microfiber. Mop salescontinue to grow. I think NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement of1994) sealed broom manufacturing’s fate in this country, although we stillmake a few here and import some as well.”

As a result of NAFTA, tariffs were lifted from imported broom cornbrooms. This meant that Mexico, the major broom corn exporter to theUnited States, could make and sell the brooms cheaper than domesticcompanies. Many U.S. broom manufacturers subsequently went out ofbusiness.

In recent years, drug wars and drought in the regions in Mexico wherebroom corn is grown have led to shortages and higher prices.

In speaking of raw material prices, Pearson said, “Broom corn remainsartificially high, but cotton is pretty stable at the moment. Handles are a littlescarce but manageable. We import some hardwood handles from Brazil andwe buy some from domestic sources as well.

“Broom corn is always a challenge. The cost of the large amount of laborthat goes into making a broom here in the United States is a challenge weare working through.”

In addition to broom corn brooms, Crystal Lake makes a variety ofsynthetic brooms for household and institutional use. The company sells todistributors, including janitorial and paper houses, foodservice distributors, industrial suppliers, hardware wholesalers, wholesale groceries, masterdistributors and retail chains.

Crystal Lake has a long tradition of eco-friendly products and practices, beginning decades before “green” became a part of the conversation in thebusiness world.

The company is named after Crystal Lake that was constructed in 1931 to

power Crystal Lake Mills that produced organic corn meal and flour. Afterthe broom manufacturing company opened in 1935, more electricity wasneeded. To meet that need, the dam on Crystal Lake was converted toproduce clean carbon free hydroelectric power, which served the companyuntil it was shut down in the 1950s, according to Pearson.

Today, in addition to renewable broom corn, the company’s products aremade with recycled cotton waste and reclaimed wood waste. Crystal Lakeuses only recycled textile mill and gin waste in its cotton mop yarns. Thecompany blends these ingredients with recycled polyester bottle caps toproduce its high-performance Eco-2 line of looped end mop heads. Mosthandles are manufactured from reclaimed wood or recycled steel.

Also, boards unsuitable for construction or other purposes are ripped intosquares around defects such as knots and splits, salvaging most of the board. These squares are rounded into the familiar round dowels used in someCrystal Lake products, according to the company.

The establishment of the company’s loyal customer base over the years, that has seen it through good times and bad, is a result of a corporate culture

of offering personalized customer service.“We believe in person-to-person contact,” Pearson said. “We have an

automated phone system, but we try our best to never allow it to kick on. Wealways want a live person to answer the phone.”

Most of Crystal Lakes’ 45 employees are long-time veterans of thecompany, as turnover has been light over the years.

“We would not be successful without the hands out there making, assembling and repackaging the products,” Pearson said. “Our employeesare ‘ground zero’ in the company’s operation. We don’t have muchturnover.”

Because of NAFTA, the Great Recession and other issues, the broommanufacturing industry in the United States is much smaller than it was acouple of decades ago. The companies that remain, such as Crystal Lake, have adapted to the times by running “leaner and meaner” and by findingnew business, while maintaining quality and value pricing.

Indeed, when asked what he attributes the company’s success over thelong haul, Pearson said, “Adaptability.”

He added: “I think things are slowly getting better here as we are adaptingto the current economic environment. I don’t think there is a big future inAmerican-made brooms, but we still make a few and we import a few.”

“Broom corn is always a challenge. The cost of

the large amount of labor that goes into making a

Michael Grossmann Kristopher ShawRawMaterial ReportBy Rick Mullen | Broom, Brush & Mop Associate Editor

Wire and wood handles are just two of the myriad of raw materials used in themanufacture of brushes, mops and brooms. Broom, Brush & Mop Magazinerecently spoke with executives from two companies, one of which supplies hardand soft woods for handles, and the other that supplies wire to the industry.

There is an “ample” supply of hardwood and softwood handles fromBrazil, according to Northeast-Brazil President Michael Grossmann. The company, which is based in both Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the United

States, provides FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and non-FSC woodenhandles. Many of these handles are imported into the United States and used inmop and broom production.

“We work with multi-year logging contracts,” Grossmann said. “We investheavily in inventory. This allows for our customers to have continuity of delivery, even during the rainy season, which usually runs from November through mid-May.”

According to Grossmann, a typical lead time of wooden handles from Brazilto North America is six to eight weeks.

Northeast supplies tauari, a hardwood from Brazil, and pine softwood for thecleaning industry. The wood harvest usually begins the latter part of May andcontinues through October or November.

“When the rains come, it is very difficult to log wood,” Grossmann said. “Evenif you have the logs, the roads are all muddy and it is hard to get them out of theforest.

“Tauari grows in tropical forests, but is logged through government-sponsoredmanagement projects, which are not FSC. The pine is both FSC and non-FSC.”

According to us.fsc.org, “The Forest Stewardship Council’s mission is topromote environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically prosperousmanagement of the world’s forests. Today, FSC operates in more than 80countries, wherever forests are present.”

One factor in doing business between the United States and Brazil is theexchange rate between the two countries’ currencies — the U.S. dollar and theBrazilian real.

“The exchange rate has been roughly stable,” Grossmann said. “People talkabout the exchange rate in Brazil. If it is favorable, they think prices should godown. If it is unfavorable, prices could go up. However, there are other factorsinvolved. First is the price of wood. The world is coming out of a recession;therefore, the price of wood has gone up all over the world. It is a globalizedeconomy. Brazil is now an emerging market, as was Japan in the 1950s,Taiwan in the ’60s and, more recently, China.” Thus, rising salaries become a

crucial factor.”Grossmann said business at Northeast-Brazil “has been stable to good.”He added: “We can’t complain, at all. If business is good for us, it is good for

our customers. We are really concerned about holding our prices and automating. We are concentrating on our efficiency and our cost control. We aim to getconsistency and quality in deliveries.

“So far in 2014, business is probably as good as last year. It is a very maturemarket. It is not like something is going to happen where, all of a sudden, everybody is going to double their sales. Essentially we all are fighting for marketshare.”

WCJ Pilgrim Wire, of Glendale, WI, is a manufacturer and distributorof wire used in the manufacturing of brushes, brooms and relatedproducts. The company has warehouses located around the world,

and carries more than 150 sizes of wire in stock.“We use stainless, low carbon and high carbon steel,” WCJ Pilgrim Sales

Manager Kristopher Shaw said. “Currently, we are having no issues obtainingthe steel we need. The company does some sourcing from U.S. rod. It is a globalmarket; therefore, some of the rod material comes from overseas.”

The company also sells raw materials for such applications as paper clips, industrial clamps, wire cables, clothes pins, bicycle spokes, springs, rivets, welding, weaving, and more.

In addition to its headquarters and a warehouse in the Milwaukee metro area, the company’s North American facilities are located in Montreal, Toronto andVancouver in Canada; as well as Shelbyville, KY; Houston and Laredo in Texas;Los Angeles, CA; Seattle, WA; and Torreon, Mexico City and Monterey inMexico.WCJ Worldwide, The Wire Specialists, a Division of WCJ Wire, operates

warehouses in Waterford, Ireland; West Yorkshire, The United Kingdom; Radom,Poland; Alicante, Spain; Bogota, Columbia; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lima,Peru; Santiago, Chile; Cairo, Egypt; Shanghai, China; and Hong Kong.

When asked about business at WCJ, Shaw said, “We haven’t been setting anyrecords. It has not been terrible, but we can always be better. It seems like thereis a little more confidence to buy right now. We have seen some of the rodsuppliers increasing some rates recently. We will just have to see if we can getthrough these increases safely and smartly. Our customers demand the highestquality products at the lowest prices. We are doing our best by getting thecustomers what they need. Holding pricing with an increased raw material costand increased quality of goods is a tough formula to keep.”
