ABOUT SUPETARWith over 4000 inhabitants, Supetar today is the largest settlement on the island of Brač as well as being its administrative, cultural, economic and tourist centre. A small island town, to the north part of the island of Brač, it is perfectly connected by ferry lines with Split and hides numerous unrevealed beauties. HISTORICAL TRACESSupetar’s history dates back to the ancient times of Roman emperors of which testi-mony are the remains of the early Christian

mosaics located close to the Parish Church (6th century) and close to the villa rustica (6th century) on the cape of St. Nicholas, by the beach of “Banj”. Over its history Supetar developed as the port of Nerežišća – the his-torical island’s metropolis. The name Supetar was first mentioned in 1423 and it gained its current urban characteristics during the 17th and 18th centuries when was inhabited by numerous peoples from Donji Humac. It has Town Status since 1997.

ST. MARY OF THE ANNUNCIATION PARISH CHURCHIt was built in 1604 on the foundations of the former basilica. In 1729 it burnt down again and reconstruction terminated in 1733 when the church acquired its current baroque aspect.

SUPETAR’S CEMETERYOne of the most beautiful sites in Supetar is its cemetery which is full of excellent works of art created by great Croatian sculptors – Ivan Rendić born in Supetar and Toma Rosandić – Petrinović Family Mausoleum.

IN THE SURROUNDING AREASAbove Supetar is the small church of St. Lucas from 10th century with the oldest boat depiction in Dalmatia – a stone relief; and the small Church of St. Roch – Supetar’s protec-tor from the plague in 20th century. Close to Supetar, just ten minutes walk along a tarmac road from the roundabout is Trolokve – a beautiful oasis of peace and a cultural and historical complex made up of three puddles and with a watering system.

HISTORISCHE KURZGESCHICHTEDie Vergangenheit von Supetar erstreckt sich sogar bis zu den längst vergangenen Zeiten der römischen Kaiser, wovon Überreste früh-christlicher Mosaike neben der Pfarrkirche (VI. Jh.) und die ville rustice (VI. Jh.) am Kap des Hl. Nikolaus am Stadtstrand “Banj” zeugen. Supetar hat sich durch die Geschichte als Hafen Nerežišća entwickelt – als histo-rische Insel-Residenzstadt. Der Name Supetar wird das erste Mal im Jahr 1423 erwähnt und die heutigen urbanistischen Merkmale erhält es während des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts, als es von den Einwohnern von Donji Humac

zahlreicher besiedelt wird. Den Status einer Stadt hat Supetar seit dem Jahr 1997.

PFARRKIRCHE DERVERKÜNDIGUNG MARIASSie wurde im Jahr 1604 auf den Fundamenten der bisherigen Basilika gebaut. Im Jahr 1729 brannte sie erneut nieder und die Renovierung wurde im Jahr 1733 im Barock Stil abgeschlos-sen, als die Kirche ihr heutiges Aussehen erhält.

TAG DER STADT (FJERA)Den Tag der Stadt feiert Supetar am 29. Juni mit einem großen Fest zu Ehren der himmlischen Schutzpatronen Hl. Peter und Paul. Hl. Peter war einer der Schüler Jesus, gebürtig aus Betsaide am See Genezareth, in der katholischen Religion ist er als “Men-schenfischer” bekannt.

LA FÊTE DU JOUR DE LA VILLE (FIERA)La fête de la ville de Supetar est célébrée le 29 Juin avec une grande fête en l’honneur des Saints patrons célestes, St. Pierre et St. Paul. St. Pierre était l’un des disciples de Jésus, un natif de Bethsaïde en Galilée, connu dans la religion catholique comme “pêcheur d’hommes”.

LE CIMETIÈRE DE SUPETARL’une des caractéristiques les plus attrayantes de Supetar est son cimetière foisonnant des meilleures oeuvres d’art de sculpteurs croates réputés – Ivan Rendića, né à Supetar , et Toma Rosandić – Mausolée de la famille Petrinović.

DANS LES ENVIRONSAu sommet de Supetar se trouvent l’église Saint-Luc du Xe siècle avec la plus ancienne représentation d’un navire en Dalmatie – relief en pierre ; et l’église Saint-Roch – patron de Supetar contre la peste du XX e siècle. IGNJAT JOB (1895-1936) The Croatian painter who painted his most important operas in Supetar. He painted Mediterranean landscape, Supetar motives, parties of fishermen, portraits and art nudes. One of the most beautiful streets in Supetar found in the old city centre is named after him. Most operas by this master of Croatian art can be seen in the Art Gallery in Bol.

DALMATIAN KLAPA SINGINGA unique musical expression in the world. Traditional homophone part-singing without instruments is a phenomenon which was officially registered for the first time in 19th century, although its history dates much further back. kL ApA is an organized singing group with a specific a cappella repertoire of Dalmatian songs diffused throughout Dal-matia, especially on the islands.

CULTURAL AND ARTISTIC SOCIETIES IN SUPETARIn Supetar three klapas operate – one men’s and two women’s. The Men’s klapa “vAL A” from Supetar celebrates its 35th anniversary this year which selects it amongst the oldest active klapas in Croatia. The Women’s klapas “ALEG R I jA”and “pUpE” are slightly younger and have already been active for 10 years. Performances of Supetar’s klapas can be seen and heard during the Supetar Summer event (from 25th June until 10th September) in front of the small church of St. Martin and on the square close to Mr. Srećko’s house. > P L E A S E S E E T H E M A P O N PA G E 1 5

THE “SUPETAR” TAMBURITZA BAND has been operating in its current structure for around 10 years, and the tradition of

tamburitza and mandolin music in Supetar is 116 years old, more precisely it dates back to 1900 when the “Porin” Tamburitza Society was founded.

“CICILJONA” BRAČ’S FOLKLORE SOCIETY Was founded in 2009 and cherishes an almost forgotten rich tradition of dancing on the island of Brač. Versovje, ciciljona, kvat-ropaši, bella rosa, polka, quadrille and šotiš are dances performed by the “CI CIL j o NA”, b R A č ’S F o L k L o R E S o C I E t y which can be seen during the Supetar Summer programme.

DALMATINISCHES GESANGSVEREIN-SINGEN (KLAPA) Ist eine einzigartige musikalische Ausdrucks-weise weltweit. Das traditionelle homophone mehrstimmige Singen ohne musikalische Begleitung ist ein Phänomen, welches zum ersten Mal offiziel im 19. Jahrhundert ver-merkt wurde, aber dessen Geschichte reicht weit mehr zurück. Eine k L ApA ist eine or-ganisierte Gesangsgruppe mit spezifischem a capella Repertoire an dalmatinischen Liedern, welche wir in ganz Dalmatien, be-sonders auf den Inseln vorfinden.

KULTUR – KUNSTVEREINE IN SUPETARIn Supetar wirken drei Gesangsvereine – 1 Männer und zwei Frauenvereine. Der Manner-gesangsverein klapa “vALA” aus Supetar feiert dieses Jahr sein 35-jähriges Bestehen, womit er zu de ältesten aktiven Gesangsvereinen in Kroatien gehört.

Die Frauengesangsvereine klapa “ALEGR I jA” und “pUpE” sind etwas jünger und wirken bereits seit 10 Jahren. Auftritte der Gesangsvereine von Supetar können Sie während der Dauer des Sommers von Supetar (vom 25. Juni bis zum 10. Septem-ber) auf mehreren Bühnen – vor dem Kirchlein des Hl. AMATEURTHEATERS “BRACERA-SUPETAR” Die Autor-Theateraufführungen des AmA-t E U R t H E At E R S “b R A C E R A – S U p E tA R ” wuchsen in nur wenigen Jahren zu einem unausbleiblichen kulturellen Ereignis in der Stadt Supetar. Für die Premieren ihrer Auffüh-rungen wird immer eine Karte mehr gesucht.

IGNJAT JOB (1895 – 1936)Peintre croate dont la majorité des peintures furent peintes à Supetar. Il a peint le paysage méditerranéen, les motifs de Supetar, les fêtes des pêcheurs, des portraits et des nus. L’une des rues les plus belles dans le centre histo-rique de Supetar porte son nom. La plupart des oeuvres d’art de ce peintre croate réputé sont exposées dans la Galerie d’art à Bol.

IVAN RENDIĆ ( 1849 – 1932 )l’un des artistes les plus célèbres de l’histoire de Supetar. Il est le premier artiste significa-tif, ainsi que le premier sculpteur ayant une formation artistique. Il est considéré le père de la sculpture moderne croate. > V O I R P. 1 3

LE MUSÉE DE L’ÉGLISEDans le petit musée à côté de l’église parois-sale à Supetar, se trouve la collection d’art sacré de l’église paroissale de Supetar, que nous vous conseillons de visiter.

LA KLAPA DALMATE Est une expression musicale unique au monde. Ce chant traditionnel homophone qui emploie plusieurs voix sans accompagne-ment musical est un phénomène qui a d’abord été officiellement enregistré au 19ème siècle, mais son histoire remonte bien plus loin. La kL ApA est un ensemble de chant a cappella ayant un répertoire spécifique de chansons dalmates qui peuvent être trouvées à travers toute la Dalmatie, en particulier sur les îles. ASSOCIATION CULTURELLE ET ARTISTIQUE DE SUPETARÀ Supetar opèrent trois klapas- 1 masculine et deux féminins. La klapa masculine “vAL A” de Supetar fête cette année ses 35 ans d’exis-tence, ce qui la classe parmi les plus vieilles klapas actives en Croatie. SPLITSKA Splitska is located in the beautiful pearl bay, 8 km from Supetar. Today’s settlement was founded in 16th century whilst the settle-ment founded in 13th century was completely destroyed by Omiš pirates. Already in the period of Diocletians’ Palace construction Splitska was an export port for stone with which the summer house of this great Roman emperor was built in Split. This is proved by the remains of Roman quarries located above the village of Splitska where draw-wells, puddles and pašarini (deep hand dug canals) can be seen from that period. You will find a relief of Hercules – the Roman God of Power made in stone in the Rasohe quarry. The quarry can be reached by taking the thematic “HER kULE S” path from the centre of the village of Splitska.

THE PARISH CHURCH OF THE HOLY VIRGIN MARY OF STOMORENA In Splitska was built on the foundations of an ancient church from 1228. In the church you can see the v I R G I N m ARy w I t H t H E SAI N t S

altarpiece dating back to 1577 and painted by the Renaissance Venetian painter, Leandro Bassano. You must visit the Cerinić family castle which was built in 1577 and is the oldest building in the village of Splitska.

LE SENTIER THÉMATIQUE “HERCULE”Au dessus du village de Splitska se trouvent les carrières d’où a été extraite la pierre

utilisée pour la construction du Palais de Dioclétien à Split. Aujourd’hui, ce palais est classé au patrimoine mondial de L’UNESCo. Le centre de Splitska est relié à la carrière par le sentier thématique “Hercule”. Nous vous conseillons de le parcourir. Le sentier est balisé avec les signes typiques de la ran-donnée. Il y a également des indications et des panneaux didactiques. Dans la carrière de Rasohe vous serez accueilli par le calme, la paix et la sérénité de la nature, par l’his-toire du passé et par un relief dans la roche représentant Hercule. Amusez-vous bien!

ŠKRIP Škrip is the oldest and one of the most authen-tic settlements on the island of Brač. It really is a beautiful live postcard of what Brač rep-resents. A place where incredible simplicity and the museum of architectural tradition live together. The Island of Brač Museum, located in the 16th century Radojković tower, is one of the most visited museums in Croatia with 12,000 visitors throughout the year. The foundations of the Island of Brač Museum date over 1500 years BC. In the lower part of the Museum and of the tower is the Roman mausoleum in which, according to legend, rest Valeria and Priska – the Emperor Diocle-

tian’s daughter and wife. The Cerinić family castle located on the main square was built in 16th century. In front of the castle two Roman sarcophagi can be seen. In the nearby cemetery is the small church of St. Spirit that dates back to the 4th century.

THE ST. HELENA OF THE CROSS CHURCH Was built in 18th century. Inside you can see two valuable paintings by J. Palma Jr. - Our Lady with the saints and Christ’s baptism. According to legend, St. Helena, mother of the emperor Constantine was born in Škrip.

“ŠTEFE PULIŠELIĆ” CHACKAVIAN DIALECT FESTIVAL Has already been taking place for six years in a row in memory of the great Croatian sociologist and Chakavian poet from Brač, StjEpAN pULIšELIć who was the author of 14 collections of poems written in the Chakavian dialect and born in Škrip.

(DIALEKT) “ŠTEFE PULIŠELIĆ” Wird bereits im sechsten Jahr in Folge abgehalten, in Gedenken an den großen kroatischen Soziologen und Dichter des ča-kavischen Dialekts von Brač, Autor von 14 Gedichtssammlungen im čakavischen Dialekt - S tj EpAN pULIš ELI ć gebürtiger Einwohner von Škrip.

ŠKRIP Škrip est l’un des villages les plus anciens et les plus authentiques sur l’île de Brač. Il constitue vraiment une merveilleuse carte postale vivante de ce que Brač est dans son essence. C’est un endroit avec un mode de vie d’incroyable simplicité et un musée des traditions architecturales. Le Musée de l’île de Brač, hébergé dans l’ancien palais Radojković du 16ème siècle, est l’un des musées les plus visités en Croatie. Chaque année, il est visité par environ 12 000 personnes. Dans la partie inférieure du musée et de la tour est situé le mausolée romain, où selon la légende, sont enterrées Valeria et Prisca – la femme et la fille de l’empereur Dioclétien. Le château de la famille Cerinić, qui est situé dans la place centrale, fut construit au 16ème siècle. Devant le château se trouvent deux sarcophages romains. À proximité du cimetière se trouve l’église Saint-Esprit, datant de 4ème siècle.

ÉGLISE SAINTE-HÉLÈNE CROISÉ Fut construite au 18ème siècle. À l’intérieur de l’église, l’on peut voir deux tableaux de valeur par J. Palma jr. - La Vierge et les saints et le baptême du Christ. Selon la légende Saint-Hélène (Jelena), la mère de l’empereur Constantin, est né juste à Škrip.
