Free radicals are an inevitable actor of tissular aging process. Daily aggressions (sun

exposure, pollution, cigarette smoke, stress, etc.) are able to generate such a huge

amount of free radicals that normal cell antioxidant defenses become overwhelmed,

inducing an oxidative stress that leaves tissue vulnerable to damage. Oxidative stress

induces collagen and hyaluronic acid breakage and leads to a loss of skin consistency

and firmness responsible for the appearance of wrinkles and a dull complexion.

Superox-C™ is a botanical active ingredient extracted from native Australian Kakadu plum specially designed to provide a topical supply of antioxidants necessary to fight free radical-induced skin damages.

THE WORLD’S NATURAL RICHEST SOURCE OF VITAMIN C

Origin of Kakadu plum

Kakadu plum (Terminalia ferdinandiana) is endemic to tropical northern regions of

Australia around the Aborigines territory of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kakadu

National Park. The small to medium-sized tree produces fruits about two centimeters

long and a centimeter wide with a single seed.

History and traditional usage

Aborigines have lived in the Kakadu park area for tens of thousands of years. As

nutrient-rich fruits, Kakadu plums have been a traditional source of bush tucker for this

people and were eaten during long treks or hunting trips. In mouth, this bushfood has

a sweet taste and leaving a pleasant bitterness end. It was also traditionally pound and

used as an antiseptic and a soothing balm for aching limbs.

Composition

Kakadu plum is annually exposed to an extremely high sun index (up to 12) with

harmful rays. The fruits have consequently developed a highly efficient self-defense

system composed of a cocktail of various powerful antioxidant molecules to protect to

sun-induced free radicals attack.

Kakadu plum has been identified as the fruit with the world’s highest vitamin C content, up to about 100 times more than an orange! It also contains large amount

of polyphenols (mainly gallic and ellagic acids). Due to its extraordinary antioxidant

composition, Kakadu plum is classified as a superfruit.

Superox-C™ is a Kakadu plum extract, a unique superfruit known

as the world’s richest source of vitamin c. It reinforces cell

antioxidant defenses to better protect against oxidative stress.

STIMULATION OF SVCT-I SYNTHESISSuperox-C™ dose-dependently stimulates the synthesis of SVCT-I in keratinocytes.

Following 24 hours of incubation in presence of Superox-C™, SVCT-I expression is

increased by + 38% at 0.1% and + 106% at 0.2%.

By inducing the SVCT-I channel expression, Superox-C™ contributes to improve the penetration of vitamin C into the skin.

Vitamin C

THE VITAMIN C TRANSPORTER SVCT-IVitamin C plays an essential role in preserving the skin young and healthy. This potent

active molecule is well-known for its multiple actions. It is a strong antioxidant agent

which protects the skin from oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals-induced

skin damage. Vitamin C also induces collagen biosynthesis in both young and aged

skin. Moreover, vitamin C is an anti-inflammatory agent known to prevent post-

inflammatory hyperpigmentation and exert brightening effect by interrupting the key

steps of melanogenesis.

All these remarkable effects rely on the skin capacity to transport vitamin C through

the skin layers. Sodium-dependant Vitamin C Transporter Type-I (SVCT-I) mainly

expressed on the cell membrane of keratinocytes, plays a crucial role in the vitamin C

distribution.

Technical solution to enhance the sought after effect of vitamin C.

ANTIOXIDANT EFFECTSuperox-C™ (0.2%) has a strong antioxidant activity +54% after 30 min and +79% at

24h.

By supplementing the skin with a topical dose of natural antioxidants, cells boost their defenses against free radicals. Oxidative stress is then reduced.

STIMULATION OF PRO-COLLAGEN IPro-collagen I is the precursor molecule of the collagen which is synthetized by the

fibroblasts. Defective stimulation signal in aged skin contributes to reduce the collagen

synthesis and therefore, weakens the skin structure.

Superox-C™ induces the synthesis of pro-collagen I by +144% at 0.4%.

INDUCTION OF HYALURONIC ACID SYNTHESISHyaluronic acid contributes to maintain skin’s hydration and viscoelastic properties.

Hyaluronic acid synthesis tends to decrease with chronological age.

Superox-C™ induces the synthesis of hyaluronic acid by +59% at 0.2%.

STIMULATION OF SYNDECAN-I SYNTHESISSuperox-C™ induces the expression of syndecan-I by +104% at 0.4% which will help

stimulate the epidermal renewal, a property affected by age.

Superox-C™ protects and reinforces the dermis to improve the skin aspect.

IMPROVEMENT OF SKIN LUMINOSITYGloss value is a parameter of the skin radiance. It defines the ability of the skin to reflect

the light, and is directly linked to the skin surface quality.

Test protocol

- 20 women volunteers (mean age of 37);

- Twice daily application of a cream with 2% Superox-C™ on split-face versus a placebo

during 30 days;

- Gloss value measurement with spectrocolorimeter at D0, D15 and D30.

Luminosity enhancement up to:

• 21% after 15 days

• 30% after 30 days

100% of the subjects demonstrated a positive effect.

IMPROVEMENT OF SKIN BRIGHTNESS AND SKIN TONE EVENNESSOn the best volunteer, color analysis using cross-polarized pictures were performed.

After one month, Superox-C™ produces up to;

• +1.7% Skin brightness induction (IWA*Newtone)

•-2.2% Skin redness reduction (a*)

• +14% Overall skin tone evenness improvement (H76)

Decrease the appearance of uneven skin tone for more beautiful and youthful looking skin.

Superox-C™ strenghtens the skin matrix and is proven effective to brighten the skin and enhance its radiance.
