Issue # 5 December 2016 Newsletter
As we head into the winter months here are a few reminders to
make sure the winter months are safe for everyone. Students
that ride buses or have recess should have boots, gloves, a warm
hat, and a warm coat. Students that drive to school should have
a winter survival kit in their car, a charged cell phone, and at a
minimum a half tank of fuel. If school needs to start late, get out
early, or be canceled there will be an instant alert message along
with a message on the local radio stations and WDAZ-TV. If
school starts late there will be no breakfast served.
There is no exact science when determining if school
should be delayed or canceled because of weather. The most
important thing is the safety of the students and school
personnel. There are several factors that are taken into
consideration when determining weather cancelations. The
temperature, amount of daylight, how much snow, and visibility
are a few of those factors. Consulting other schools in the area is
also done but is not a huge factor in deter-
mining school closing. The weather here
could be quite different than it is in a
surrounding community, along with the
fact that the size of our school district
creates a bus routes that are quite long.

The food drive was held the week of November 7th. The food
drive is an annual event sponsored by the North Star National Honor
Society members. The members include: Gabbie Miller, Stephanie Miller,
Madison Borstad, Brenna Bulman, Jayden Komrosky, and Peyton Halver-
son.
After the Honor Society members collect all the food items that
were donated they bring the items to the food pantry, which is in the
basement of the Lutheran Church. The food collected will be provided to
families in need. The food drive also is a great way to teach students in
school the importance of helping others.
Each class had its own box to fill with food donations. Whichever
class in the elementary and high school donated the most food would
receive an award. Congratulations to the 5th Grade and Juniors for
donating the most items. The Junior class will receive pizza and the 5th
graders will receive ice cream.

The day before Christmas Break the High School
Students will be watching a movie on
December 22nd in the gym.
Movie Day
The weather here could be quite different than it is in a surrounding community,
along with the fact that the size of our school district creates a couple bus routes that are
extremely long and buses travel on roads that might not be in the best condition because of
the weather. The weather can certainly be different from one end of the district to the
other and conditions in all of these areas are considered. Once again safety of everyone is
the biggest factor.
The school year continues to go by very fast. It is hard to believe the end of 2016 is
nearly here. The last day of school before the Christmas break will be December 22nd with
school dismissing at 3:00 PM that day. School will resume on January 4th, 2017 at 8:38 AM.
The North Star School wishes everyone a happy and safe holiday season. Please stay in-
volved with your child’s education and remember if you have any questions please call or
stop in. GO BEARCATS!

The lyceum was for students K-12 on November 8th at 8:50 in the morning. Gary and
Suzie are a couple that travel to schools to show kids what mu-
sic was like during the western era. Gary plays an assortment of
instruments from the guitar to the dulcimer. Suzie played some
instruments, but she mainly sang. They told stories of Native
American life, sang western songs, and
dressed the way many would have during
this time. Before they were about to sing
the last song , Suzie asked for a volunteer and Mr. Reiser was chosen. He
wore a chicken hat and danced like a chicken while Suzie and Gary sang
their final song.

There are few things that create more guilt, fear and feelings of failure…for us
parents…than seeing our children performing poorly in school. Fortunately, we can guide
them toward success by employing a solid plan:
Remember that good relationships are the foundation.
The research is clear: Kids who enjoy loving relationships with their parents enjoy more
success academically and are more likely to avoid high risk behavior like drugs, sex,
gangs, etc.
Avoid unwinnable power struggles like the plague.
Learning is something that we cannot make another person do. The harder we try,
the more they rebel and the more our relationship with them suffers.
Model love of learning through "eavesdrop value-setting."
Allow them to overhear you talking with excitement about your own learning.
What they overhear is often far more powerful than what they are told.
Set aside a time and place for daily learning.
This is a time or place for them to learn by either doing their homework or thinking
deeply about it. This time is NOT for playing video games, watching TV, playing with
friends or siblings, etc.
Use empathy to help them learn from their mistakes.
When our children "learn" by thinking rather than doing, they will obviously get
some poor grades. Responding with sincere empathy rather than anger makes all of the
difference: "I can't imagine how bad it must feel to get that grade. I love you. Let me know
how I can help."
Teach them to give.
Most importantly, our kids need to learn that it is better to give than to receive. Today,
too few make contributions to their families in the form of chores… or contributions to their
communities in the form of service. Entitlement, low self-esteem and lack of motivation are
the predictable result.

On November 16th, 2016, North Star FCCLA attended their District Leadership
Meeting (DLM) in Devils Lake at the college. The morning started out with recaps from the
previous school year, STAR event participants were recognized and District President Candi-
dates gave their speeches. Once this was finished, voting delegates cast their ballots. Beth-
any Gilseth from Langdon will serve as our 2017-2018 District President. Brenna Bulman
will serve as the VP of Communications next year.
Travis Jordan was our first speaker. He is a superintendent from Beulah. He motivated
members by sharing his past, explaining to them how they can set their mind to anything,
and that there is always someone out there that cares about them and what they have to
say.
Chris Jorgenson was our other speaker. She is a self-defense instructor from Leeds.
She instructed the members how they should become more aware of their surrounding
and what they should do if they feel threatened. This leaned towards a wonderful discus-
sion between the members and Chris.
The day ended with the installation of the new District Officers for the 2017 -2018
school year.
