2 THE HEARTBEAT Greater Angleton Chamber

Changes in healthcare continue to impact our nation, our state, and our community, but at Angleton Danbury Medical Center, there is a strong foundation with a team that cares about the community and is committed to it's needs.

Laying the groundwork more than forty (40) years ago, Angleton Danbury Medical Center continues to be recognized as the health care leader in Brazoria County for providing innovative, high quality health care.

We are your business partner, your community friend, and your healthcare provider; our “Friends and Neighbors” are not only the patients but each citizen, each resident, and each life that we touch.

As the CEO of our hospital district, I want you to know that we will be working tirelessly to meet the healthcare needs of our communities. Whether it is through our Long Term Strategic Planning Sessions, tackling the important legislative initiatives that impact healthcare, or recruiting new healthcare providers and expanding our service lines, we will be working hard to bring the best healthcare services and providers to the Greater Angleton community, our hospital district and surrounding communities.

At Angleton Danbury Medical Center, the philosophy of “Friends and Neighbors Caring for Friends and Neighbors” has never been more important to our success than it is today. As we move into the future of healthcare, we will still be Your Choice for Healthcare.....”

David A BleakneyCEO, Angleton Danbury Medical Center

Dear Friends,

It is hard to believe that we are deep into the first semester of the school year! Our students and staff got off to one of the best starts in many years, and that great start was due to the hard work of so many people: our teachers, administrators and support staff. We are confident that we have provided an environment where our children can learn the skills necessary to become successful adults.

Susan Combs, the Comptroller for the State of Texas, recently released the FAST ratings for the 2011-2012 school year. The FAST rating provides a way for a community to gauge the value they receive for their school taxes. Out of more

than 1,000 school districts, only a handful (45) received a higher rating than Angleton ISD. The educators of AISD believe that we have a dual responsibility: provide a high quality education for our children and be good stewards of our community’s tax dollars. The FAST rating indicates that we are fulfilling that responsibility.

You will often hear people bemoan the state of education today. Do not believe them! Our children learn more at an earlier age than we did, and the testing they take is so much more rigorous than any of the testing we endured. And, of course, we believe that, as President Theodore Roosevelt said, “To educate a man in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society.” Therefore, we have a strong partnership with our parents in teaching pillars of good character. So many of our students spend their weekends helping the people in our community. All around town, you can see proof that our students are good citizens.

I am proud to be a part of this great school district; I hope you are too.

Patricia Montgomery, Ed.D.Superintendent, Angleton Independent School District

Community Building In Action

by Sue Strother

A tea room with a bakery, a candy maker, a rubber boot buddy, a gift basket business that benefits the homeless,

music therapy for sick patients – got your attention? These are just a few businesses that are being explored, discussed, and developed through the YEA! program currently being held at Angleton Junior High School. The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a program that invites students in grades 6 – 12 to apply. When chosen, it challenges and develops their creative and re sou rc e f u l ideas.

YEA! is an after-school program where the kids meet once a week to produce ideas, learn through market research, create business plans, present their ideas to a panel of investors, and quite possibly launch their very own companies. The U. S. economy is founded on the success of small business. Acquiring the skills that make a business a success at such a young age will result in a tremendous economical advantage for these students.

The YEA! program is a combined effort of Angleton’s Chamber of Commerce and the Angleton School District. Angleton Independent School District provides a classroom and computer

lab on a weekly basis and the event space for five different signature events.

26 students from Angleton and Danbury School Districts and Angleton Christian School as well as home schooled students are participating in the program. Each

business or idea must meet a criteria of limited funding, launch in the

given time frame, and be a realistic idea with no

real estate required. Products can be sold online and sold on

consignment.

Cheyenne Stott, a 7th grader attending Angleton Junior High,

has dreams of owning her own tea room with a bakery one day. However,

for the YEA! program she plans on baking delicious delicacies. “This class has helped me bond with people and has helped me to understand how to create a business, I have been helping my mom, since I was very little, bake for the holiday’s. Now I am in charge of the baking, and I really like it,” an

exuberant Cheyenne explained.

Kevin Ivey, a 7th grader attending Angleton Junior High, wants to make and

sell candy beginning on a small scale. Ivey

YEA!Volunteer Instructor Gary Schmalfeldt, HEB manager points out all the great qualities of the blueberry pie Cheyenne Stott brought to class as the first prototype of her business.

plans on selling candy at schools and is hoping to include a website to promote his product. “All kinds of candy, fudge, taffy, chocolate; all the sweet stuff!” His plans also include having limited specials and seasonal candies and he hopes to make a 40¢ to 50¢ profit per item. There are sure to be plenty of transactions coming his way.

Conner Christian’s business will be an idea for all rubber boot fans. A Rubber Boot Buddy, “Helps boots stay in the back of the truck. It’s waterproof, no water can get in the boots and it’s handy. When you throw the boots in the back of the truck, they get water in them, and if you put them between the bed and the truck, one or both of the boots can fall off the truck. The Rubber Boot Buddy prevents all of these problems, keeping them safe and the inside dry, “ Christian sedately elaborated on his plan, which certainly is “thinking outside the box” or “inside” as the case may be.

Students are participating in a program that will take them beyond the classroom. There will be life lessons learned and skills that will serve them well in high school and beyond. The year-long program offers guest lectures, and field trips to local companies. They will visit and begin relationships with business mentors, and complete projects that will build the students confidence

by supporting their entrepreneurship.

Working with the students and observing the transformation process in creating a business or an idea is seen as a great opportunity in the eyes of HEB store manager, Gary Schmalfeldt. “I am excited to have a small part in a person’s life that may turn out to be the next Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, or Frank DeLuca (Founder of Subway),” stated Schmalfeldt.

The instructors for the YEA! program gain more than relationships, they help to improve lives and experience the enthusiasm the students bring to the class every week. “I have a long history of working with young people, and I have always enjoyed those experiences. My goal in working with the YEA! program is to inspire these students. I value my time with them because I get insights in what the resourceful youth of today are thinking” said Dennis Davenport, an instructor for the YEA! program.

The YEA! program was founded in 2004 at the University of Rochester with support from the Kaufmann Foundation. Today, the Young Entrepreneurs Academy is a proud national partner of the United States Chamber of Commerce. YEA! is a very successful partnership with area chambers and school districts providing a positive impact on students and the future of our economy.

100% of Young Entrepreneurs Academy graduates graduate high school on time

99% of Young Entrepreneurs Academy graduates enroll in college

but local businesses have given their time, resources, and commitment to the students in the YEA!

Stay tuned for more on YEA!. These kids are going places and we want you to see their success!

A few words from the Chamber President, Beth JourneayYEA! is one of the best programs the Greater Angleton Chamber of Commerce has ever brought to the area! The kids are AMAZING...the parents are so supportive and there is an excitement level that is just hard to describe. This program involves a large number of volunteers, and this experience has proven to me that our chamber members and this community believe in the spirit of entrepreneurism. More importantly...they believe in our youth! Personally, I am thrilled to watch these kids learn and grow. These enterprising children will be successful in whatever they choose for their career path. We will keep you posted on the program and their success. Please mark your calendar now and plan to attend the Investor Panel Event that is set for March 21, 2013. You will get to see first hand as these Young Entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to a group of Investors who have invested in YEA!. I promise you will be amazed.

Angleton Danbury Medical Center

Dave Bleakney, ADMC’s CEO, and his senior management team have worked hand in hand for almost 20 years to bring the “Best in Healthcare”

to our community whether it is new physicians or the latest technology in today’s healthcare environment, including new services lines or expanded facilities.

Angleton Danbury Medical Center (ADMC) strives to be on the cutting edge of quality healthcare and services for our community. The hospital is dedicated to listening to the community members and partnering with the physicians to insure that appropriate healthcare services are available. Part of that commitment is seen in the recruiting of new physicians to the community so that the residents do not have to travel away from home for quality healthcare services or providers.

And despite the proximity to Houston, recruiting new members to the ADMC’s outstanding medical and caregiver staff is much easier than one might expect.

"Our close proximity to Houston has been known to encourage some physicians to seek the hospital district out as a place to work." - Dave Bleakney, CEO

HIRE YOUR CHAMBER!

That sounds strange, doesn’t it? All these years you have been asked to “join” your Chamber, but each member does a lot more than just join when they pay their membership investment.

Your Chamber does many things for the business and professional communities and general public which they might not be able to do alone. Your Chamber provides services and benefits that completely overshadow your costs – that is, your membership investment – when you hire the Chamber.

YOU HIRE YOUR CHAMBER… …As a watch-dog to protect your interest in

local, state and national legislation that may affect your business and community.

…To work for more and better job opportunities for the people who patronize your business.

…To promote a good public image of your community for business and industry.

…To assist you in marketing your products and services.

Now, doesn’t that phrase “Hire your Chamber” sound logical? When you write your check for your membership, think of it in these terms. You are hiring your Chamber, its staff and services, as a valuable part of your business or profession.

Your investment is deductible as a “necessary item of business expense”. It is not a contribution or a gift you are making…it’s an investment in your business and your community!
