SUNITA WILLIAMSAn Indian American astronaut and a United States Navy officer who holds the record for longest space flight by a woman.

SUNITA WILLIAMS• She was assigned to the International Space Station as a member

of Expedition 14 and Expedition 15. • In 2012, she served as a flight engineer on Expedition 32 and

then commander of Expedition 33. • She holds the record for number of spacewalks for a woman, and

most spacewalk time for a woman. • Williams broke the latter two records, then held by

Kathryn Thornton, during Expedition 14/15 in 2007, but both records were surpassed by Peggy Whitson during Expedition 16.

• Williams regained both records during her sixth spacewalk, on September 5, 2012, and currently has 50 hours and 40 minutes of spacewalk time (seven walks)(refer link 2 and 3)

Extra info*• Sunita is very fond of running, swimming, biking, triathlons, windsurfing, snowboarding and bow hunting.

Sunita joined society of Experimental as a Test Pilot and Society of flight Test Engineers and American Helicopter Association. She made a grand performance in all of these.

about their career, she gave her own example saying when she was a child she wanted to be a veterinarian like her father Deepak Pandya but ended up as an astronaut.

• During her time in orbit, she did seven spacewalks, several science experiments, extensive robotic work, completed a marathon and triathlon, and even blogged and tweeted from space—all of this while making big decisions manning the International Space Station as commander of Expedition 33. Sunita Williams: astronaut, engineer, pilot, runner, swimmer, pet-lover, and a woman who is a role model for anyone interested in space exploration.

• Sunita said that the Indian government should pay attention to children who want to become astronauts. “The government should have a programme similar to the one the US has,” she said adding that the US programme can serve as a model.

• Clad in NASA uniform, Williams interacted with students from different fields of science. She told her audience that her parents and siblings had always been a source of inspiration for her. Her father’s passion for his work and focus on goal and her mother’s determination and outgoing nature had inspired her.
