SUNGAI PETAGAS PROJECT
PROJECT BACKGROUND
Decline in fisheries has been caused by overfishing, habitat degradation, water pollution and
climate change. This decline will eventually lead to food security problems. To offset the
problem, stock enhancement (sea ranching) has been one of the strategies practiced by some
of aquaculture institutions to sustain the fisheries production on long term basis. Petagas river
is located at the center of Kota Kinabalu City has been way too far different with its appearance
in about 40 years ago. Nowadays, the rivers oriented with high degree of pollution and affected
the fisheries resources in the river.

The project of Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) community programmed involves the
ranching of Giant Freshwater prawn in the Petagas river and community awareness campaign.
Juveniles of the Giant Freshwater prawn were reared in the BMRI shrimp hatchery first before
the suitable size were picked and released in the river. Long-term stocking will increase the
population of the M. rosenbergii in the river as well as sosio-economic of the Petagas river.in
order to ensure the success of stocking efforts, the water quality of the river must be improves.
A series of awareness campaign are organized mainly to change the mentality of the public
towards conserving the health of Petagas River. The mission of this project is towards the
beautification of Petagas River as well as its fisheries resources.
FEATURED RESEARCH PROJECT
COMMUNITY PROJECT
The Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) has initiated a community programme involves
the ranching of juveniles of Giant Freshwater prawn in the Petagas river and community
awareness campaign. Juveniles of the Giant Freshwater prawn were reared in the BMRI shrimp
hatchery first before the suitable size were picked and released in the river. Long-term stocking
can improve the socio-economic of the Petagas people as this effort will increase the
population of the M. rosenbergii in the river and after a period of time, the fishermen
community in Petagas eventually can harvest the prawn by themselves. In order to ensure the
success of the stocking efforts, water quality of the river must be improved. A series of
awareness campaign are organized mainly to change the mentality of the public towards
conserving the health of Petagas River.

TAGAL SYSTEM
The Tagal system is a local and traditional approach to biosphere management in Sabah. It is
also known as bombon which means ‘do not’ in Kadazan dusun language. The system has been
developed to limit the utilisation of the natural resources in order to ensure the continuous
production of aquatic resources, especially, the inland fish. Today, the local community has
started to integrate the system into its tourism industry. This paper is about the influence and
contribution of the tagal system as a tourism product to the community of Sungai Petagas.
Primary data were collected via a preliminary study at the study area involving field
observations and interviews with local key informants. Generally, the study found that this
system was capable of functioning as a concrete tourism product in ways that were beneficial in
terms of environmental management, economic development and as social development of the
local community
Tagal system is the system of prohibiting any of fishing activities at the area involved in the
river. This system was launched on 18th January 2014 by YB Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin,
Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry and Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah. This system is
important to this project as it helps in boosting the production of releasing prawn in the
Petagas River.
