This is the second article (Part 2) from our series of five articles bearing the same title. In Part 1 we have briefly explained what is ERM and the methodology that we have adopted on how to implement it in KJO, i.e., as per the risk management process below. We have also covered briefly on the first process, i.e., Establishing the Context. In this Part 2 we will be covering on the second process of risk management, i.e., Risk Identification process.

Process 2 - Risk IdentificationThe most critical step. This step seeks to identify the risks that need to be managed. It involves identifying the risks

which arise from all aspects of the business environment established in the Establish the Context process. The aim is to develop a complete list of the risks that could impair the achievement of each business operations’ objectives. Identification should include risks whether or not they are under the control of the department/company.

Risk RegisterTo ensure consistency in documenting the complete list of risks in KJO an inventory of risks called the Risk Register is established. It is the responsibility of the department manager to ensure that all significant risks to their respective area of operations are captured in the Risk Register. All departmental complete list of risks shall be compiled and documented by Risk Management Division-ISD to form a complete list of risks for KJO.Department Risk Coordinator shall be trained to enable the facilitation of Risk Identification process and registering of the identified risks into the Risk Register. Risk Management Division-ISD shall provide all the necessary training, guidance and assistance to all stakeholders on this matter.Important notes on Risk Register:1. It is meant to capture all significant risks of respective area of

operations.2. The target is to have a complete list of all the significant risks.3. Unlike audit observations register, ERM Risk Register should be getting longer and longer until it is deemed comprehensive and complete.4. Your Risk Register will reflect your understanding and awareness of your required functionalities and objectives. 5. A comprehensive Risk Register will provide some assurance to management that you are

proactively identifying and managing your risks. Risk Identification Technique The mainstay Risk Identification technique for ERM implementation in KJO shall be a team-based brainstorming session to be carried out at minimum once a year, during the annual KJO Full Risk Review exercise. However, it is very important to emphasize here that there are no limitation to the technique and approach of Risk Identification. ERM involves

heterogeneous risks that are coming from all area of operations in KJO. Therefore, KJO shall utilize all resources of information that can comes from various techniques and approaches for risk identification, including but not limited to, the following: • Loss/Near Miss Records• Loss Investigation Reports• Audit Findings• Insurance Risk Assessment• Benchmarking Reports • Strength, Weakness, Opportunities & Threat (SWOT) Analysis

• Specific Assessment’s Findings: e.g., HAZOP, QRA, Emergency Drills Assessment, Asset Performance Report, Environmental Impact Assessment, etc.Important notes on risk identification technique:1. There is no limit on the technique of how risks can be identified. 2. It is the format of ERM Risk Register that we have standardized.3. ERM is not meant to replace the various techniques and approaches for the many required specific assessments in the company. 4. ERM target is rather to integrate all these activities to ensure that risks in the company are being managed in coordinated and integrated manner.Kindly be reminded that the above is only a brief write-up on Risk Identification. For deeper and more detail understanding of ERM and its implementation requirement in KJO, please do not hesitate to contact any of the team member of Risk Management Division, ISD. In the next article (Part 3), we will be focusing on the subsequent process of risk management, i.e., Process 3 - Risk Analysis.

Safety

Management

The project of safety

Building a safety culture is not a safety function, but a proj-ect management function. Consider the following tools in

managing a safety culture building process.Assess: Assess whether your equipment meets the re-quirements of current and applicable safety and industry standards. Usually you may need to get outside help from professional organizations specializing in safety reviews of equipment. Compliance to the current and applicable standards represents the best due diligence and the best engineering practice.Assign: Make specific work assignments and hold individuals accountable for certain safety objectives. They will become your safety champions.Assign individuals to inspect equipment and work areas for problems such as poor lighting, missing guards or damaged equipment.Assign ownership of an individual problem to an individual (who may lead a group in resolving it).Assign individual safety ownership for equipment retrofits, and well as for purchasing new safe and compliant equip-ment.Assign appropriate budgets so these tasks actually happen.Train: Once you’ve selected your safety champions, you must do more than just tell them, “Now I am making safety part of your performance evaluation.” You must train everyone that safety is equal to or greater than all other goals. Safety champions are teachers, but they are only as effective as their own training and the backing of management allow them to be.Teach: Your trained safety champions will teach safety to the rest of the team.Monitor: Check your safety culture progress by asking key questions. How are employees responding? How are your teachers carrying out their duties? Do they need more train-ing? When did you last observe people working? Are safety inspection reports precipitating action? Is it easy to report unsafe conditions or equipment? Are you using outside experts to review equipment compliance? Are you ensuring that new equipment meets current and applicable safety standards? Are you replacing unsafe equipment? Are you rewarding your employees for safe or unsafe acts?Recent studies show that in companies with lower accident rates, the personal involvement of top managers in occupa-tional safety is at least as important as their decisions in the structuring of the safety management system (functions that would include the use of financial and professional resources and the creation of policies and programs, etc.).The active involvement of senior managers acts as a motiva-tor for all levels of management by keeping up their interest through participation, and for employees by demonstrating management’s commitment to their well-being.The results of many studies suggest that one of the best ways of demonstrating and promoting humanistic values and people-oriented philosophy is for senior management to par-ticipate in highly visible activities, such as workplace safety inspections and meetings with employees.

If the Milky Way exists in the biggest cosmic void ever observed, that

could solve a puzzling mismatch between ways to measure how fast the universe is expanding.Observations of 120,000 galaxies bolstering the Milky Way’s loner status were presented by Benjamin Hoscheit June 7 at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Austin, Texas. Building on earlier work by his adviser, University of Wisconsin Madison astronomer Amy Barger, Hoscheit and Barger measured how the density of galaxies changed with distance from the Milky Way.

In agreement with the earlier study, the pair found that the Milky Way has far fewer neighbors than it should. There was a rise in density about 1 billion light-years out, suggesting the Milky Way resides in an abyss about 2 billion light-years wide.Simulations of how cosmic structures form suggest that most galaxies clump along dense filaments of dark matter, which are separated by vast cosmic voids. If the Milky Way lives in such a void, it could help explain why the universe seems to be expanding at different rates depending on how it’s measured (SN: 8/6/16, p.

10). Measurements based on the cosmic microwave background, the earliest light in the universe, suggest one rate of expansion, while measurements of nearby supernovas suggest a faster one. Those supernovas could be feeling an extra gravitational pull from all the matter at the edges of the void, Hoscheit says. The actual expansion rate is probably the slower one measured in the universe’s early light.“If you don’t account for the void effects, you could mistake this relationship to indicate that there is too much expansion,” Hoscheit says.

Milky Way’s loner status is upheld

Because machines succeed at repetitive tasks, while humans have irreplaceable skills such as the ability to judge emotion. In short, bots have blind spots, a point perfectly illustrated by Stacey Harris, Vice President at Sierra-Cedar – a company that conducts an annual HR Systems Survey, “AI analyzes and learns from patterns, there is a danger of the software replicating biases in the recruiting or promotion process. If a company’s top performers historically have been white males between 30 and 40 years old, that bias can inadvertently become built into algorithms.”

The most powerful and destructive volcanic eruptions — called super-

eruptions — can take millions of years to form because magma doesn’t gush, but rather slowly trickles into the system, a new study finds.Researchers found that super-eruptions are triggered by an incredibly slow but steady drip of magma from large reservoirs deep within Earth’s crust into smaller reservoirs closer to the surface, they said.In turn, the large reservoirs draw in the hot magma from the layer beneath them, which is Earth’s mantle, the researchers said. The reservoirs keep the magma in a state of partially molten rock, and store it like a sponge, they added. [Big Blasts: History’s 10 Most Destructive Volcanoes]Because the researchers couldn’t physically travel to these large reservoirs, they ran a series of numerical simulations to better understand the process. The results show that the large reservoirs are essential for generating the largest volcanic eruptions known to Earth, they said. However, because the drip of magma is so slow, it can take millions of years before a supervolcano erupts, they said. The finding explains why supervolcano eruptions are few and far between — for instance, Yellowstone, one of the world’s largest supervolcanoes, erupted about 2

million, 1.2 million and 640,000 years ago.The four main layers within Earth. The four main layers within Earth.Credit: Jakinnboaz/ShutterstockThe discovery may also shed light on why other volcanoes erupt with greater frequency and at specific magnitudes, the researchers said. That’s because the amount of magma stored in Earth’s upper crust determines the frequency and magnitude of volcanic eruptions.Small eruptions that emit less than 0.2 cubic miles (1 cubic kilometer) of material happen regularly — yearly, if not daily, the researchers said. But super-eruptions, which erupt hundreds of cubic miles of material — are rare, occurring hundreds of thousands of years apart.“Our current understanding tells us that

hot magma can be injected from the Earth’s lower crust into colder surroundings near the surface,” study co-author Wim Degruyter, a lecturer of geodynamics at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom, said in a statement. “At this point, the magma can either erupt or cool down to such a point that the magma solidifies and an eruption does not occur.”Until now, researchers haven’t been able to figure out how the magma can stay hot in a near-surface reservoir, which is cooler than the larger reservoirs in the deep crust.“Our study has shown that the key to this is much larger reservoirs deeper below the surface that are able to slowly increase the temperature in the upper part of the crust such that it becomes more amenable to the storage of magma,” Degruyter said.

“ When the crust has become fully mature, giant reservoirs are able to form in the upper crust and thus we see extremely powerful eruptions.”For instance, earlier research has shown that a reservoir in the upper part of the crust beneath Yellowstone is connected to a deeper magma pool, the researchers said. The deeper magma reservoir is about 12 miles to 28 miles (19 to 45 milometers) beneath Earth’s surface, and likely holds enough magma

to fill the Grand Canyon more than 11 times, the

researchers said.“Our calculations appear to

agree with the observations that have been made at

Yellowstone,” Degruyter added.

If Batman were to go to Mars, is this what he would drive once he got there? Actually, probably not. NASA’s recently-unveiled Mars rover concept vehicle is intended to stay here on Earth, where it will hopefully inspire young people to learn more about the agency’s ongoing efforts to send astronauts to the Red Planet. That said, some of its technical features may ultimately find use in a manned mission. The 24-ft (7-m) electric vehicle was presented to the public this Monday, as part of a ceremony to launch the NASA-affiliated Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex’s “Summer of Mars” event.Commissioned by the visitor complex, it was built by Port Canaveral, Florida-based Parker Brothers Concepts (using no taxpayer dollars, we’re told). Among other things, the company has previously

created a street-legal light cycle based on those in the movie Tron.

The rover’s electric motor is powered by a 700-volt battery, which is in turn charged by built-in solar panels. Its GPS- and radio-equipped front section seats four people, and can detach from the rear for outings such as scouting missions. That rear section houses a mock lab, and is made to be self-supporting while the rest of the vehicle is off exploring.

The vehicle’s six semi-spherical wheels are designed to provide optimal traction on both rocks and in sand, offering plenty of surface area while also incorporating slats to keep them from getting bogged down.If you’re interested in seeing the rover in real life, it will be on display at the visitor complex for the next few weeks, after which it will spend July and August making appearances at various locations along the US East Coast.

Amazon has now joined an exclusive Wall Street club of companies with shares valued at over $1,000 — not bad for

a bookseller that took a chance on a mystical

place called the world wide web.

Just two decades after CEO Jeff Bezos’ online retail behemoth went public, the company briefly crossed the $1,000 threshold during trading on Tuesday, beating tech giant Alphabet to the punch. Alphabet’s Class A shares opened at $996.21 on Wednesday, a few dollars shy of hitting the four-figure milestone for the first time.Play Amazon Opens First New York Brick and Mortar Book Store Facebook TwitterEmbed Amazon Opens First New York Brick and Mortar Book Store 1:40While Amazon’s shares are now teetering under $1,000, crossing that threshold puts the company in an exclusive club.Only one other technology company — Priceline Group — trades above $1,000, with shares priced at $1,859 as of Wednesday afternoon.Related: 20 Years After Its IPO, How Amazon Changed the Way We ShopA few other U.S. listed companies trade above $1,000 per share, perhaps most notably Warren Buffett’s holding company, Berkshire Hathaway, and Seaboard Corporation, an agribusiness and transportation conglomerate. While some mall mainstays have struggled, Amazon has been thriving. It took Amazon 18 years as a publicly traded company to catch up to Walmart, but just two more years to become twice as big as the ultimate brick-and-mortar superstore.Amazon reported a $724 million profit for the first quarter of 2017, delighting investors and propelling its stock even closer to the $1,000 per share milestone.Amazon’s mark cap — the total value of outstanding shares — is $475 billion. By comparison, Walmart is worth $237.5 billion. As a company that has forever changed the way we shop and consume, Amazon has also made it a point to eschew some of the traditional practices of other publicly traded companies.Amazon’s stock hasn’t split in nearly 18 years. While some companies may split as a way to make its shares more affordable and to reward long-term investors, Amazon hasn’t bought into the practice. The company’s stock has split just three times since it went public in 1997. The following year, Amazon issued a 2-for-1 split. In January 1999, Amazon offered a 3-for-1 split. Later that year, it gave shareholders a 2-for-1 split.Of course, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Amazon. Remember what a flop the Fire phone — Amazon’s entry into the smartphone market — was? That same year, in 2014, the company’s aggressive spending seemed to be a red flag to investors after Amazon reported losses of 95 cents per share, while analysts had predicted losses of 74 cents per share.Consistently posting a profit is also something relatively new for Amazon, with the company now on a streak of eight consecutive quarters — perhaps proving to investors who stuck with them that the halcyon days they promised are finally here.
