PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray. God of great witnesses, C: You have set before us many examples of faith and righteousness. Open our eyes to see what they saw, to live as they lived, and to walk in faith as they walked in faith. Amen.

NARRATIVE READING Hebrews 11:1-16; 12:1-2

A reading from Hebrews.Chapter 111Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.2Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval.3By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.

Page 12: Sunday, September 6, 2015 A Life By Faith Holy Communion.

4By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain's. Through this he received approval as righteous, God himself giving approval to his gifts; he died, but through his faith he still speaks.5By faith Enoch was taken so that he did not experience death; and "he was not found, because God had taken him." For it was attested before he was taken away that "he had pleased God."

Page 13: Sunday, September 6, 2015 A Life By Faith Holy Communion.

6And without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would approach him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.7By faith Noah, warned by God about events as yet unseen, respected the warning and built an ark to save his household; by this he condemned the world and became an heir to the righteousness that is in accordance with faith.

Page 14: Sunday, September 6, 2015 A Life By Faith Holy Communion.

8By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going.9By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.10For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.11By faith he received power of procreation,

Page 15: Sunday, September 6, 2015 A Life By Faith Holy Communion.

even though he was too old — and Sarah herself was barren — because he considered him faithful who had promised.12Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, "as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore."13All of these died in faith without having received the promises,

Page 16: Sunday, September 6, 2015 A Life By Faith Holy Communion.

but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth,14for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.15If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return.16But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.

Page 17: Sunday, September 6, 2015 A Life By Faith Holy Communion.

Chapter 121Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

The word of the Lord.Thanks be to God.

PSALM   Psalm 146

  1 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, O my soul!

  2 I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

  3 Put not your trust in rulers, in mortals in whom there is no help.

  4 When they breathe their last, they return to earth, and in that day their thoughts perish.

5 Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help, whose hope is in the Lord their God;

Page 19: Sunday, September 6, 2015 A Life By Faith Holy Communion.

6 who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; who keeps promises forever;

  7 who gives justice to those who are oppressed, and food to those who hunger. The LORD sets the captive free.

8 The LORD opens the eyes of the blind; the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous.

  9 The LORD cares for the stranger; the LORD sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked.

  10 The LORD shall reign forever, your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah!

22He said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life,

what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear.23For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.30For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them.31Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to

you as well. 32Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.33Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves

that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.34For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

CREED  I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,

Page 30: Sunday, September 6, 2015 A Life By Faith Holy Communion.

he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
