Letter from Andrew Housley Dear friends, I wonder if any of you can remember the 1990’s classic movie, ‘Nuns on the Run’. Charlie (Robbie Coltrane) and Brian (Eric Idle) are gangsters on the run, and manage to seek refuge in a Nuns’ teacher training school. Throughout the film, they manage to avoid their gangster boss, the police, and Brian’s girlfriend by being disguised as nuns. The other day, while watching some scenes from the film, I came across the following scene where Charlie is trying to explain to Brian the doctrine of the trinity. Charlie: You've got the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. But the

three are one - like a shamrock, my old priest used to say. "Three leaves, but one leaf." Now, the Father sent down the Son, who was love, and then when he went away, he sent down the Holy Spirit, who came down in the form of a...

Brian: You told me already - a ghost. Charlie: No, a dove. Brian: The dove was a ghost? Charlie: No, the ghost was a dove. Brian: Let me try and summarize this: God is his Son. And his Son is

God. But his Son moonlights as a Holy Ghost, a Holy Spirit, and a dove. And they all send each other, even though they're all one and the same thing.

Charlie: You've got it. You really could be a nun! Charlie and Brian are no different to any other Christian today: they were trying to understand the complex nature of God.

Back in the 4th century, St Athanasius of Alexandria spent much of his ministry arguing that God was trinity, leading him into conflict with Arius. This conflict led to the Council of Nicaea, where the matter was settled once and for all and the nature of God would be understood in the doctrine of the trinity. The creed written by St Athanasius and can be found on page 27 of the prayer book. Within it he writes, The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible: and the Holy Ghost incomprehensible. When studying the doctrine of the trinity at college, I thought the word ‘incomprehensible’ was a good word to describe the nature of God. There is no easy way to describing the nature of God in the trinity, because whichever metaphor we use- even the clover- is incomplete when trying to understand the wonderful mystery of God’s love and nature. Our understanding of the trinity, like the early Christians, will grow out of our experience of God in prayer and worship. I remember it being explained to me that the trinity makes Christian spirituality distinct from any other. We pray to the Father, representing the needs of the world with the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit. As in recent years, on Trinity Sunday (22nd May 4pm) the choirs of St Michael’s Church and Holy Trinity Church will come together to lead a Sung Evensong at Holy Trinity, Bickerstaffe. Through the words of the readings, anthems, and hymns we will celebrate the mystery of God’s nature. I hope you will be able to support what is always a beautiful service.

Lord, I know how restless I sometimes feel

when peace escapes me.

Then I think of me, multiplied by many,

and I begin to understand the widespread unrest in our world. I pray, Lord, that you will bring your peace to all who need it,

starting with me, so that I can carry it with me wherever I go. Amen.

his disciples. * He prays for future believers who will come to faith through the

disciples’ witness. * Jesus prays that his disciples may be united in God’s glory, so that the world may know that God sent him. A personal prayer Lord, somehow I can’t just take it in that you pray to the Father for me. So often I take my faith for granted, not really thinking about the nitty-gritty.

Help me to experience your fullness as I journey on with you. Amen. 15th May: Easter community John 14.8-17,(25-27): Summary * Judas has set off into the night, and Peter, Thomas, and now Philip are

perplexed. * Jesus explains that his way of dying and living is God’s way of working

in the world. * The Spirit will enable the disciples to share in Jesus’ true way of living for the Father. A personal prayer Lord, I long to receive more of you in my life, to have the kind of faith that expects to see miracles happening around me. The faith that believes I can play my part in creating these miracles, because you said I could – for your glory. Teach me to step out in faith and allow myself to be changed by your

Holy Spirit. Amen.

A personal prayer

I am not worthy, Lord, and yet you love me and enfold me.

I turn away, and yet you are still before me. I bury myself in the distractions of life,

and yet you are there beneath me.

I close my mouth, and yet you still hear me.

I shut my eyes, and yet you still appear to me.

I am not worthy, Lord, and yet I know you love me and enfold me.

All I ask, Lord, is ‘stick with me’.

Stick with me, Lord. Amen.

Parish Registers Please continue to pray for the families mentioned below. Thank you. The funeral for the late Mrs Freda Moss, aged 78 and formally of Liverpool Road, Bickerstaffe was held on Wednesday 6th April, followed by burial in the churchyard. Congratulations to Thomas Bernard Wehrle and Rachel Ann Howard, who were married on Friday 8th April.

The Generous Earl By Owen Taylor There was great excitement when, in 1839, Edward Smith-Stanley, the 13th Earl of Derby, announced his intention to spend around £6,000 on a Church and Parsonage at Bickerstaffe. Prior to this undertaking, Parishioners relied on a small wooden Chapel, situated at the entrance of the old ‘Intock’ Lane for the sharing of Public Worship.

Drawn from the 1840 Ordinance Survey Map Showing the site of the Early Chapel 1828-1843 Note: The ‘Intack’ Path originally meandered to Rainford, albeit, through deep ruts and muddy tracks. In 1843, coinciding with the building of the Church, a new road was constructed and the letter ‘e’ was added to the ‘Intack’. The Intake Lane has served the Parish ever since.

Since the Reformation, various local organisations had petitioned the authorities for a new church and now their aspirations were to be fulfilled. Others to benefit from the Earl’s generosity were the Parishes of Burscough, Knowsley, Newburgh and Westhead, who all had churches and parsonages built. His benevolence didn’t end there, he also built a number of schools, some of which are still providing education today. Contemporary writers reckon the Earl spent in the region of £100,000 on his honourable project and note, ‘this would equate to around £25 million today’. As Lord Stanley, he began a political career, as M.P. for Preston in 1802, then he was called to the ‘House of Peers’ in 1832, being created the first ever, Baron Stanley of Bickerstaffe.

Edward the 13th Earl of Derby held the Earldom from 1834-1851, relatively less than his Father, who held the title for 58 years. He was well liked by his employees and gave much consideration to their needs. His avocation was the study of Natural History, his knowledge was second to none, and he maintained a menagerie on the estate to give him hands-on experience of wildlife. Many of his collection of rare books were bequeathed to the Liverpool Museum.

He died in 1851 and was buried on the 8th July. Around 400 tenants assembled at Stanley Gate, on horse-back, to join the procession of

mourners as it journeyed from Knowsley to Ormskirk. One of the Pall-Bearers was the Revd. T.E. Abraham, a personal friend of the late Earl and the first Vicar of Bickerstaffe. An oak tree from Knowsley Park that was said to be a great favourite of the Earls, was used to make the coffin.

Revd. T. E. Abraham – First Vicar of Bickerstaffe. A very early photograph, probably taken in the late 1840s. The Earl was interred in the Derby Chapel of Ormskirk Church, along with 30 of his ancestors. Within weeks, the family issued orders for the vault to be sealed for all time. Subsequent Earls of Derby have been interred in a special Plot at Knowsley Churchyard.

Food for thought 1st man: Sometimes get so angry with God! I want to ask him why he allows so much misery in the world, so much cruelty, so much poverty, so much injustice, so much hunger. I am tempted to say to him, "Why, oh why, do you allow these things to continue when you could do something about it?" 2nd man: Well, why don't you? 1st man: Because I'm afraid God might ask me the same question.

Bickerstaffe Quaker Burial Ground by Dr. Mary Bonsall

The Bickerstaffe Quaker Meeting was founded in 1653, only a year after George Fox held a meeting on Firbank Fell that united a number of nonconformist sects into the Religious Society of Friends, known as Quakers. Until William and Mary came to the throne in 1688, nonconformists were not tolerated and operated clandestinely. So the Quaker Meeting House in Bickerstaffe may not have been built until 1689 when we know it was licensed for marriages. It was situated on the north side of the Liverpool Road not far from Stanley Gate. However, there is a burial ground dating from the time of Charles 11. In 1665, Peter Leadbetter, a Quaker landowner, conveyed 1120 square yards of land to the Bickerstaffe Quaker Meeting to be used as a burial ground. He most probably lived at the adjacent farmhouse, now called Graveyard Farm. There is a plaque on the front of the building with the initials P L, and an E that could relate to his first wife, Ellin. Individual graves cannot be identified, because there is no grave plan, and in 1691, Hardshaw Monthly Meeting decided that ‘stones be removed off graves and none go into the practice of laying them on.’ But we do have over two hundred names, with dates of internment, in a list compiled by John Haynes, a member of Southport Quaker Meeting, and John H Sagar, from the Ormskirk Family History Society, which published it. The last burial was in 1813 when John Bispham died, aged 89. Bispham was also the last member of Bickerstaffe Quaker Meeting, closed in 1786 when Monthly Meeting decided it was no longer viable. It had found that that John Bispham and his wife were the only friends left, and that they held a ‘dull and lifeless’ Meeting every Sunday in their own home next to the Meeting House. The graveyard remains in the care of the Hardshaw Trustees. Friends from nearby Meetings like to scatter the ashes of their loved ones there, and visit occasionally the peaceful place that contains so much of the history of the early Friends of Bickerstaffe Meeting.

Page 18: Holy Trinity, Bickerstaffe May 2016€¦ · Holy Communion 10.30am Andrew Holy Communion 10.45am Martin Holy Communion Worship & Learning 1st May: Easter Peace John 14.23-29: Summary

Page 18

A few of the individuals buried in the graveyard have been found in other sources and perhaps more research would reveal others. Richard Johnson from Ormskirk was one of the earliest converts. He was sent out to preach the word and travelled in the ministry in England and Ireland. In 1659, he attended the first General Meeting that Quakers held, and in the same year George Fox stayed with him in his house in Ormskirk. He was buried in 1686, aged 56. Two months later his wife Elizabeth was also interred there. The first two Bickerstaffe residents known to have become Quakers were Oliver Atherton and Richard Cubban. Atherton’s son described himself as ‘yoeman’ when he succeeded to his father’s farm so it is likely that his father rented or owned a substantial property. Cubban was described as ‘a man of consequence’ so may also have belonged to the same class of independent or semi-independent farmers. Fox stayed with him in 1657. Both Atherton and Cubban travelled in the ministry. As early as 1654, Cubban was imprisoned in Furness for ‘speaking to priests and people in assemblies’, that is, for challenging the authority of the established church, which during the Commonwealth, was Presbyterian. In 1661, after the Restoration, Atherton and Cubban were both imprisoned again, along with a number of other Quakers, in Lancaster Castle, for not paying their tithes to their parish church of Ormskirk. Cubban survived but Atherton died in prison in 1663, ‘through long imprisonment in a cold, damp, unwholesome place.’ In the following year, 1664 Cubban and Oliver Atherton’s son Godfrey, were imprisoned for their part in a ‘riot’, and, in addition, were each fined 20 shillings by the notorious Judge Jeffries for attending a prohibited meeting. They survived, but Henry Foster, indicted at the same time, died in Lancaster Castle and was brought back for burial in the Quaker graveyard. Mary Southworth from Lydiate was also in Lancaster prison in 1664, and wrote a long poem there that gave an account of Quaker sufferings under persecution. She survived to marry a schoolmaster, Henry Molyneux, and was buried at Bickerstaffe in 1695. Her husband and

their son Nathaniel, another schoolmaster, are also interred there. In 1674, Oliver Atherton’s wife, Ann, was excommunicated for refusing to pay towards the repair of the Ormskirk church. Four years later, on Boxing Day, she was buried in the graveyard. But in 1688, when Godfrey Atherton’s brother died, aged 31, he chose to be buried in ‘Godfrey’s orchard’ perhaps to be near to his father, Oliver, who had been brought from prison to be buried there in 1663. By coincidence, Godfrey Atherton and Richard Cubban died in the same year, 1709, and both rest in the graveyard.

Pentecost: God’s rescue for us all

The spirit has come and is by our side,

To be there when we need him most,

Come Holy Spirit come Holy Ghost.

Knowing who Jesus was, all he said and done,

And now can be shared by everyone

That Jesus took all of our guilt and shame.

You gave sight to the blind so they could see.

You cured the sick, healed the lame,

Took away my guilt and shame.

Your every word sets us free and brings us release.

Our Lord our savour our prince of peace.

Lord every day in you I will boast,

Come holy spirit come Holy Ghost.

Thank you Very many thanks to all who generously gave donations, flowers and their time to decorate the church for Mothering Sunday and Easter. Thank you to the Mothers' Union for providing daffodils for all ladies on Mothering Sunday and to Anne and our Sunday club for our lovely teapots. At Easter the church was a glorious celebration in flowers. Thanks to all who helped in any way.

Bickerstaffe WI

At the May meeting of the Bickerstaffe W.I. we welcome an 'old' favourite speaker, Mrs. Pat Ascroft, who is coming to tell us about her latest adventure. This is entitled Arctic Dog Sledding. Please join us on Monday, May 23rd at 7.30pm at Four Lane Ends

Mission. For more information please contact Margaret Fairclough on 01695 729161. Bickerstaffe Mothers’ Union

In April we met at the Mission and our speaker was Mrs .Sheila Beeby. The talk was about death and various ways in which other countries had rituals for the

deceased. We all got a little verse, which is very true.

A good character is the best tombstone Those who loved you and were helped by you Will remember you when flowers have withered Carve your name on hearts – not marble Charles H.Spurgeon

The Mothers’ Union Prayer

Loving Lord, We thank you for your love so freely given to us all.

We pray for families around the world.

Bless the work of the Mothers' Union as we seek to share your love

through the encouragement, strengthening and support of marriage

and family life.

Empowered by your Spirit, may we be united in prayer and worship, and

in love and service reach out as your hands across the world.

In Jesus' name. Amen
