Pastor Jake Magee

For Everyone | Wise And Foolish Builders | Luke 6:46-49

Luke 6:46-49

“46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foun-dation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground

without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Matthew 7:21-24

“21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ 24“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them

will be like a wise man who built his house...”

1 Cor. 3:11-15

“11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13 each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he

will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.”

1Peter 2:4-8

“4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” 7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” 8 and “A stone of stum-

bling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.”

Study Questions:

Wise & Foolish Builders | Luke 6:46-49

1) In our passage Jesus talks about two men who go through a severe storm. What’s the worst storm you’ve been in or a

natural disaster you’ve gone through?

2) Discuss how everyone’s life is like a structure they are building.

3) In verse 47 Jesus says everyone “who hears these word of mind and does them...”.

a) How can “hearing” and not “doing” be dangerous in everyday matters?

b) How about spiritually (cf. James 1:21-27; 1 John 2:3; Matt 21:28-31)?

4) Up until the storm, it is likely that both men’s houses looked quite similar, and that the critical difference was unseen. If good-looking houses represent people who look moral, can someone live like a good Christian and not make it to heaven?

Explain?

5) Both men were skilled construction workers. What made one wise and the other foolish wasn’t skill but what they chose

to rest their buildings on.

a) Discuss the following passages which identify Jesus as the only foundation to build on (1 Corinthians 3:11-15; Mat-

thew 16:18; 1 Peter 2:4-8).

b) Discuss some possible reasons why the foolish man opted out of a foundation, and how those reasons might be rel-

evant for understanding the danger of religion.

6) It was only when the storm came that the differences of the two houses were revealed.

a) Has the Covid 19 crisis revealed some unhealthy or unhelpful things you’ve been trusting? What?

b) According to 1 Peter 1:6-7, what does Peter say about this difficult season?

7) What are the different ways we prepare for potential natural catastrophes? How is this relevant for the big storm that

Jesus warns us about?

8) Discuss some practical ways to ensure that the good that you are doing (like going to a small group and studying the

Bible) is building on the foundation of Jesus.
