A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
As I write this, I can still remember the fortnight or so when we had our Summer, and it is good to be able to enjoy a Summer Serenade tonight, to re-live those "lazy, hazy,
crazy days"! Tonight, along with our friends the Oldham Band (Lees) we offer you a varied programme
of music - from Mozart and Brahms to Rodgers and Rutter - to help you relax and enjoy yourself.
We love to hear your comments, so after the show, why not pop into the Arena Bar, enjoy a goodnight drink, and have a chat with our members before you go home? (I'm pretty sure you'll find me there ! )
Thank you for your support over our past Season, and we look forward to welcoming you to our 2016/17 concerts, details of which appear in this programme.
If you've not had them yet, enjoy your Summer holidays.
Fred Jones
OUR GUESTS:
THE OLDHAM BAND (LEES)
Even though the ‘Oldham Band (Lees)’ is a relatively young band, its history can be traced back to 1873 when the ‘Glodwick Band’ was formed. In 1955 the band became the ‘Lees and Glodwick Band’ and later amalgamated with the ‘Cobden Chadwick Band’. The band reformed as ‘Oldham Brass 97′ and when the band was reduced to a dedicated group of just 8 players, it was agreed that John Collins would take over the helm as Musical Director and bring with him several young players from ‘Bare Trees Community Band’. After months of planning and preparation, the band had its first rehearsal in August 2004 at the Royal British Legion in Lees. ‘The Oldham Band (Lees)’ was born. The band is now thriving and is busy performing in concerts and contests nationwide. The band enjoyed a lot of success in the lower sections, including 5 consecutive Area Championship wins and 4 Pontins’ titles. The band is currently competing in the Championship section and recently achieved third place in The Senior Trophy at The British Open Spring Festival and has gained a promotion into The Senior Cup at next year’s contest. At the 2016 Whit Friday contests last month, the band finished fifth overall due to consistently finishing in the top 5 at all the 8 contests entered. Grammar School.

OLDHAM CHORAL SOCIETY The 2015 -16 season has been another great success with two very contrasting concerts at the RNCM, and our now traditional Christmas celebration with tonight’s guests the Oldham Band (Lees). Back in November we sang an all Italian programme at the College including the Rossini Stabat Mater and popular operatic items by Verdi, Bellini and Mascagni. Our team of soloists would not have been out of place on any of the major European stage, and indeed our bass Henry Waddington was recently the winner of a prestigious International Award for his opera performances. Our thanks go to Kathleen Wilkinson for continuing to entice such top singers to join us. The Christmas concert was, as always, a happy occasion with a a wide variety of seasonal music performed in the splendid setting of Oldham Parish Church. More recently our spring concert featured music by 3 giants of the Romantic era, Brahms, Schumann and Dvorak. The Brahms is a great challenge and a “big sing” for any choir, so it was good that the choir got a welcome rest during the first half, and had the opportunity to hear our own accompanist Angela Lloyd-Mostyn perform the Schumann Piano Concerto, ably suported by our excellent orchestra. It was a day of mixed emotions for our conductor Nigel Wilkinson, who, due to the concert, was unable to be at Charlton to witness Burnley win the Championship, but he was still able to celebrate with us. The now biennial battle against relegation begins on August at and will mark his 50th season watching his home town team.
• We aim to sing / promote quality choral music with first class soloists and professional orchestral
accompaniment; and perform in some of the best regional venues including the RNCM Concert Hall.
• We are always keen to welcome new members and currently have vacancies in all sections.
• If you would like to sing with the choir please visit our website, contact Fred Jones on 0161 205 4638
or speak to any member of the choir
• Rehearsals are held every Monday evening in the Chadderton Town Hall.
• The annual membership fee is very low
• We are currently trying to increase the number of “non-singing” members to help with a range of tasks such as front of house at concerts, librarian and assistance with refreshments at rehearsals. If you can
volunteer in any of these capacities please approach any choir member and you will be warmly welcomed.

be pardoned me that I serve him with a cheerful spirit.” [Franz Joseph Haydn]
