Technical difficulties with our public address system caused a slight delay at the beginning of our meeting, which President Loring Manley opened at 2:10 pm (our PA system has been an ongoing thorn in the side of everyone and the Board is actively working on purchasing a new system). Loring thanked the members who brought treats for the break, and recognized all our dedicated volunteers who make CCCSS such an enjoyable organization. We also welcomed about seven first-time volunteers with a succulent.

Announcements:

• Mary Peracca will participate in a craft show and sale in Santa Margarita on Saturday, November 18. Richard Rowe will be selling his pottery on December 2 & 3 in Morro Bay.

• Bill Findley discussed the Live Auction at our December Holiday Potluck. NOTE: the potluck is on Sunday, December 10, beginning at 2:00 pm. This event is limited to members who have made reservations with Pat Gilson, and there are a limited number of seats. Members can enter a succulent or succulent-related item in either auction. In the Live Auction, the value should be a minimum of $40, and must be approved by Bill prior to December 8. Bids will be in incre-ments of one dollar, and proceeds will be split (75% to the member and 25% to the club). Items for the Silent Auction are a donation to the club and do not need to be pre-approved.

• Kathie Matsuyama thanked our members for their generous contributions to Penny Pines, which have resulted in the reforestation of many acres of forestland. Along with art and other items, the donation jar is on the Ask Me table that Kathie shares with Gene Schroeder, one of our most knowledgeable members and a Past-President. The next Garden Gathering will be at the garden of Leslie and Gene Rotstein in Los Osos in February. If you would like to host a Garden Gathering, please contact Kathie Matsuyama or Susan Ross. Their contact info is on the Garden Gatherings page of this newsletter.

The Plant-of-the-Month in November was Aloes, and there was a very informative article in last month’s newsletter. Loring brought in some of his Aloes as examples of some of the many varieties that exist. Our climate on the Central Coast allows us to grow Aloes in our yards and they attract hummingbirds. They tend to be tough and cold-hardy, tolerating temperatures down to 20°-25°, and don’t require a lot of water. They are easy to propagate from seeds and offsets and are easy to hybridize, resulting in an amazing range of looks. They are prolific bloomers and most originated in Africa.

With Rob in Africa, Terry Skillin and Terrie Leivers brought in the raffle and thank-you plants and Terry in-troduced the raffle plants. Members’ brag plants were displayed. The refreshment/ social break followed.

Following the break, we welcomed our featured speakers, Hope and Jessica from Los Osos Valley Nursery – opened in 1977 – who graciously stepped in for our originally scheduled speaker who had to cancel at the last minute. They have prepared a number of videos which can be accessed from the nursery’s Facebook page. Hope and Jessica brought in a great selection of succulents to sell. Their presentation featured cold-hardy succulents that can be grown successfully in our geographic area. They mentioned that Euphorbias are not only cold-hardy, but gophers hate them and they make excellent barriers for more tasty plants. They recommend mulching at this time of year for frost protection.

Following our speakers, the raffles were held, the room was cleared (thank you for that!), Wayne con-ducted the plant exchange, and the Executive Board had its meeting.

Respectfully Submitted,Carol Harlow Moss, Secretary

CCCSS GARDEN GATHERINGS

OTHER GARDEN GATHERING NEWS

Did you attend one of our CCCSS Garden Gatherings this year and enjoy the comradery of socializing with fellow CCCSS members in a gorgeous cactus and succulent garden? Are you thinking about hosting a Garden Gathering event? Join the fun! We’re looking for folks with a desire to share their passion for their plants, their garden and a willingness to host. Sign-ups for 2018 are underway. Please let us know if you are interested!

Contact Susan Ross at [email protected], or Kathie Matsuyama at [email protected].

If you’re not familiar with the CCCSS Garden Gatherings, read on:

• Why: CCCSS club is large; it’s often hard to connect with other cactophiles at our huge meetings.

• What: A Garden Gathering is a chance to meet club members in a fun, casual garden setting. Food and a tour of the mem-ber’s garden are included.

• Where: Gatherings take place in a CCCSS member’s garden.

• Who: Garden Gathering participants must be CCCSS mem-bers. Sign-ups are taken at monthly club meetings. The host decides the number of guests.

• When: Hosts pick the date and time for the event. They will be guided through the process of planning and organization.

The process of pre-planning, event organization, sign-up sheets, emailing your guests, etc. will be capably coordinated by Susan and Kathie! Please don’t hesitate to sign up because you have a weed or two in your garden, we all do! And don’t worry if your garden is not all cacti or succulent-related. The intent of Garden Gatherings is to get to know other members of CCCSS, and this is a very delightful way to do exactly that!

Photos are of Skip and Leslie Rotstein’s Garden.

SPECIAL GARDEN GATHERING NOTICE A garden gathering will be held Saturday, January 13th, at noon in Nipomo. This event is timed to view fabulous aloes in peak bloom! If you are interested in attending, please email Kathie Matsuyama or Susan Ross (below).

REMEMBERING RUTH BANCROFT, FOUNDER OF RUTH BANCROFT GARDEN

Visit the Ruth Bancroft Garden website.

Ruth Bancroft Garden founder has died at 109.

By Lisa P. White for the East Bay Times

WALNUT CREEK — Ruth Bancroft, a renowned expert on drought-tolerant plants and founder of the Ruth Bancroft Garden, died at her Walnut Creek home Nov. 26. She was 109.

Bancroft was born in Massachusetts and grew up in Berkeley. Although she studied architecture at UC Berkeley, the 1929 stock market crash derailed her career plans. Instead, Bancroft earned a home arts degree and later taught high school. In 1939, she married Philip Bancroft Jr., whose family owned a 400-acre walnut and pear farm in Walnut Creek, according to a news release.

Bancroft had a keen intellect and an insatiable curiosity about plants and nature. She collected and catego-rized seashells and planted flower gardens around the home she shared with her husband and three children on the Bancroft property.

In 1950, Bancroft bought her first succulent and even-tually she collected greenhouses full of the hardy plants. After selling plots of land to residential devel-opers, in 1971 the Bancroft family cut down their last walnut orchard and Philip Bancroft Jr. gave his wife the 3.5 acres to plant her succulents.
