The event also attracts visitors from across the Globe, who travel to Edinburgh specifically to ride in, or

spectate the proceedings. The Event Arena, situated on the Royal Mile and focussed around the Mercat

Cross on Parliament Square, stretches from the base of the Royal Mile at the Scottish Parliament and Palace of Holyrood and finishes at St Giles’ Cathedral, where the cavalcade completes its journey. Edinburgh Riding of the Marches now ranks among Edinburgh’s flagship

events and as well as attracting significant local following, it also proves to be a major attraction

for tourists.

The annual Edinburgh Riding of the Marches culminates in a spectacular cavalcade of 280 horses making its way up the historic Royal Mile towards the Mercat Cross, accompanied by pipe bands

and led by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, City Officer, The High Constables, The Deacon Convenor of the Incorporated Trades of

Edinburgh, Trades Officer, The Old Master and Lord Dean of Guild of the Merchants Company of Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Exiles

Association, all carrying their associated banners and flags and watched by crowds in excess of 20,000 people lining the cobbled streets.

The modern day re-enactment, revived in 2009, also commemorates Randolph Murray’s return to Edinburgh with the ancient Blue Blanket and the tragic

news of the defeat of the Scottish Army at the Battle of Flodden 1513 and is in honour of those who sought to protect the integrity of

Edinburgh’s Common Land and defend the inhabitants of the city.

Edinburgh Riding of the Marches takes pride of place as the Jewel in the Crown of Common Ridings. Riders from

across the world attend the event every year to enjoy exhilarating gallops, spectacular scenery and the epic

finale of the historic Royal Mile. The annual rider application process sells out in minutes, producing 280

riders all keen to experience the challenge of the ride and take the opportunity to ride into the heart of the City to

be greeted by the thousands of spectators.

Common Riding, a uniquely Scottish tradition, celebrates the custom of defending common land against encroachment and attack from raiders. It has been described as a celebra-tion of who we are and across the 29 Riding Towns of Scot-land sparks annual celebrations involving entire communi-ties, passed down through generations of families, with many young boys and girls aspiring to become the Captain or Lass representing their town.

The symbolic tradition of inspecting the common land dates back centuries, to at

least 1494, making it one of the oldest rides in Scotland. The first record of a

Riding of the Marches in Edinburgh was on All Hallows (Halloween), 31st October

1579. On this date, a group of towns’ people gathered at the Provost’s house at 11 o’clock, from where they embarked on an inspection of the Marches of the Common

Land led by the Captain of the Trained Band (Town Guard), the Lord Provost, Bailies and Burgesses. The inspection of the Common Land continued, until the demise of the

practice in 1718.

Edinburgh Riding of the Marches dates from 1579, with the inspection of the Common Land continuing until the demise of the practise in 1718. In 1946 a special ‘Riding of the Marches’ was held in Edinburgh to celebrate peace and the end of the war. Seventy riders took part and a large crowd, reported to be ‘approaching Royal visit dimensions’ greeted the riders in the Royal Mile.
