two decades until the Australian Audio & AV Show leapt into life just two years ago here in Melbourne.

A ‘proper’ hi-� show block-books a collection of hotel rooms and clears them of furniture so that manufacturers and distributors can present their hi-� and home cinema systems in a space which roughly corresponds to a real listening room. Well, kinda — your room at home probably doesn’t have eight chairs ranged in front of the speakers and a dozen people peering around the door. But in the best rooms at this show there’ll have been a big effort to get things acoustically ‘on song’, and you’ll be able to settle into a seat, nod politely to the folks minding the equipment, and then listen. This is a unique opportunity to hear some of the world’s best hi-� without having to pretend to a retailer that you’re thinking of buying something. Relax and listen. Take

your time, don’t rush it. It can take quite a while for your ears to settle into a particular room, and longer to hear what the hi-� is doing. Don’t get nervous about outstaying your welcome — you won’t... though perhaps be a little considerate to others, particularly if they’re actually glaring at you and pointing at the door.

So use your time wisely — you may not see absolutely everything, but I can almost guarantee you will see, or hear, something which could change your life in terms of bringing the relaxing and rejuvenating power of music into your home.

I’m always saying “it‘s all about the music”. But hey, it is...

Sit down. That’s my advice. Sit down and relax. Because the Australian Audio & AV Show is the polar opposite of most ‘shows’ — the usual events that take place in convention centres and big halls, where sad-looking vendors nervously huddle inside their booths, half wanting to talk, half hoping you’ll avoid their eye and walk past. An hour or more of walking around, you’ve got a bag full of brochures and blisters forming on your toes. That sort of show is a ridiculous way to � nd out about audio and AV — you won’t hear anything useful in an open hall surrounded by other noises, and you can’t judge image quality when every screen is re� ecting giant � uorescent lights hung high overhead.

Yet amazingly, that’s how audio and AV has been presented to the public at home and lifestyle exhibitions for the last 20 years in Australia. There hadn’t been a ‘proper’ hi-� show for

and stand will commence. And for some, maybe, this is one of the least understood aspects of show organising. Each and every space in this show has to be sold, and that means what we see here today is 100% a commercial enterprise, completely dependent on two things: the ongoing success of the show, and the support from the trade. And that success is directly linked.

But what makes this show so successful? Well, to start with, you need a great team, and the Chester Group has longevity and fortune on their side, being established in this market now for over 12 years, and having great partners in Australia with whom we work hand-in-glove.

But even with these advantages, you need a great venue like the Intercontinental Rialto, so that all these great products can be properly displayed in the best possible setting — we don’t want to drink � ne whisky from a tea-cup, as it were! Then we need to have great Media Partners, and again we are fortunate in Australia to have NextMedia giving no less than 100% support to this national event.

Are we � nished? No we’re not — there is one more key ingredient. A good organiser can provide the play, the location, the stage and the cast. But without you, the audience, all would be in vain. So we need not only to achieve all of the above but to be 100% sure that what we are creating is in fact what people want. And if you’ll forgive a bit of self-congratulation here, we were pretty sure that this show is what you had been waiting ages for; you rewarded our � rst two Australian shows with some of the best attendances for this type of show that we’ve seen worldwide. There has been a wide spread of age groups, with both genders well represented, and queues that on one occasion stretched out of the hotel and round the block as the show got under way.

Let this great event continue, and in my position representing the Chester Group, may I extend my personal thanks to all those who have come together to make a great show where for many years there was nothing like it.

Despite the huge advances in global communications, and today’s ability to do just about everything ‘remotely’, isn’t it nice to know that one longstanding stalwart of communications remains largely unchanged to this day after the best part of 150 years — exhibitions!

Exactly the same value, excitement and beckoning are still there — the ability to see, feel, touch and buy. A shop window for all that’s new, all under one roof and backed up by the people who make them.

Now, in all honesty, if these principles go unchanged (and speaking for ourselves we think they will), exhibitions really are unique. But I wonder how many people actually realise just how much effort is required to create a great show, just like the Australian Audio & AV Show, now in its third very successful year. The day after this show � nishes the dates for next year will have already been set and the job of selling each room
