“A World-Class Program with World-Wide Appeal”

2 S U M M E R S T U D Y P R O G R A M S

Dear Pre-Collegians, Middle Schoolers, Parents and Friends,

You are about to embark on the most exciting and educationally rewarding summer of your life! By

joining our college credit, enrichment, or middle school program at Penn State University, you will

experience a “SUMMER LIKE NEVER BEFORE”…a summer filled with challenging, yet exciting classes…

a summer filled with new friendships from all over the globe…a summer filled with the finest sports

and athletics available only on a “Big Ten” campus like Penn State…a summer filled with exciting

nightlife in the “Ultimate College Town”…a summer filled with weekends off campus, the annual

Central Pennsylvania Arts Festival and exciting events on campus…a summer that has “something

for everyone”…a summer filled with activities, activities, activities!

Summer Study Programs offer 5 different programs at Penn State University. Our 61⁄2 -week,

Summer Study at Penn State Program offers students completing 10th, 11th or 12th grade the

unique opportunity to earn COLLEGE CREDITS as well as experience college life in a relaxed

summertime atmosphere prior to entering college. With the “pressure off,” summer academic

life permits time for successful development, personal growth and maturation, study skills, time

management, self-confidence, community living and independence.

Our 6-week “Triple Play” Program brings a unique blend of academics, internships and community

service all rolled into one fantastic program. Students completing 9th, 10th or 11th grade will choose 1

intensive workshop for 2 weeks, get real-life work experience through a hands-on internship for 2 weeks, and

give back to the community with 2 weeks of service. The Triple Play is sure to be a winner!

Our 3 1⁄2 -week, Summer Enrichment at Penn State Program and 2-week, Intensive Workshop Programs offer

students completing 9th, 10th or 11th grade the ability to experience the “beat and pulse” of an up and run-

ning university before they actually attend a matriculated university. This “head start” on college life per-

mits each student an easy transition from high school to college. Students attend enrichment style classes

where a heavy emphasis is placed on group interaction and discussion based topics.

Our Middle School program offers students currently completing 8th grade the opportunity to learn in an

environment where our directors, administrators, and staff work with all students on a personal level,

ensuring the finest care, supervision and mutual respect. Learning this summer is easy in our 4-week

or 2-week Middle School Programs. Class categories range from intellectual and creative pursuits (The

Smarts and The Arts) to atypical classroom subjects (Physical Ways and Lazy Days). In the classroom,

on the stage, on the dance floor, on the courts and on the ball fields, Summer Study students are engaged

in activities all day. Our goal is for students to learn, both in and out of the classroom, to adjust to

community-style living, and to set their sights on SUCCESS!

Academic programs are NOT all the same. All of our pre-college programs offer Kaplan SAT

Preparation (pg. 16), Special Features (pg. 9), and exciting enrichment classes (pg. 16-18). The

summer calendar is packed with nightly events in the Ultimate College Town: shows, live

concerts, dance clubs, ice skating, movies, broomball, skit night, water sports night, Minute to

Win It, SSP Fashion Show, casino night, Summer Study Idol, go-karts, our farewell banquet and

more. Creatively planned daytime events and activities revolve around the interests of students

in the program: sports clinics, tournaments and pick up games, discussion groups, jewelry

making, tie dying, poets corner, special events and more!

All in all, these years are the most important and the most impressionable years of adolescent life.

The security and confidence gained through our programs will prove to be invaluable for success

throughout high school and the college years. There IS a difference in programs!!!

We are proud that more high school students choose a summer program at PENN STATE UNIVERSITY

than any other college campus. We invite you to ask previous participants why!

Sincerely,

Summer Study Programs

Hello Mr. Cooperman,My name is Daphne Turner and I was a participantof the 61/2 week summer study at Penn Stateback in 1998. I came across the website and justwanted to email you and let you know that I stillbelieve it was the most amazing experience andthat I have benefited so much from being a part of your program. I have since completed architecture school and received two master’s

degrees—in both architecture and landscapearchitecture—and I am now a practicing plannerand landscape architect in Florida. I know that my success in college and graduate schoolcame as a result of the experiences I had atSummer Study. I can’t express my delight for the program enough!!!I really just wanted to say hello and thank youagain for everything. If there is any way I can be of assistance to you or your team by answeringquestions for prospective participants I would be honored to do so. My best to you and the SSPS staff.Regards,

WHAT MEDICAL CARE IS PROVIDED FOR AN ILLSTUDENT? A Summer Study medical coordinator will escort any ill student to the on-campus University Health Center for properphysician attended medical care. Parents will always be notified ofan ill student and advised of all aftercare and progress. Mostroutine health care and physician visits are handled for a nominalcharge per visit except for prescription drugs, x-rays or extensivediagnostic exams. A medical form will be sent in the springrequesting a medical history and health insurance policy numbers.

HOW MUCH SPENDING MONEY IS NECESSARY? We suggest that each student bring about $75 per week forpersonal items (snacks, gifts, toiletries, etc.). The program tuition includes almost everything (see page 30).

WHAT RESPONSIBILITIES AND OBLIGATIONS DOES MYSON/DAUGHTER HAVE TO THE PROGRAM? All studentsare expected to have regular attendance at all classes, meals andscheduled activities (including weekends). As part of the "familylife" collegiate experience, each student is required to respect therights of others, maintain reasonable cleanliness in the residencehall, and behave in a manner befitting collegiate life.

IS THE PENN STATE CAMPUS SAFE? Penn State Universityis a leader in the academic community in the area of campussecurity. Twenty-four hour security patrol cars and our extensivelytrained on-campus Staff will care for the safety and well being of all our students. When off-campus, all weekend travel arrange-ments and staffing will be personally managed by a full timeSummer Study program director. Television interviews on CNNNews and the Almanac of Travel Talk Show, attest to the pastexpertise brought to our academic program.

POTPOURRI:To maintain our reputation as having a campus and programthat “has something for everyone”, SSP is proud to alsooffer: a poet’s corner, a cappella singing, ultimate frisbee, a cartoon workshop, juggling, flag football, tye dying, astudent rock band, board games, billiards, ping pong. dance aerobics, a piano lounge, a residence hall mini movie theater, field hockey, beach volleyball, canoeing, a Beaver Stadium tour, the Dorm Wars weekend, indoor rock wall climbing, karaoke night, and much, much more!

PARENT’S CORNER...WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY LIKE? – Each program’s typical dayis slightly different. A “Sample Daily Schedule” can be found onpage 7 for our pre-college programs and on page 21 for our MiddleSchool Enrichment program. However, most programs begin withbreakfast, followed by morning class(es). After lunch, both collegecredit (if applicable) and enrichment classes will be held in the earlyafternoon. The balance of the afternoon permits plenty of time fororganized recreational and sports activities (as detailed on pages 4-5), studying or simply socializing with friends. Dinner is followed byexciting planned evening activities (see page 4) and/or study time(as required).

WHAT CLOTHING AND BAGGAGE SHOULD MYSON/DAUGHTER BRING? Casual summertime apparel is allthat is necessary. A complete clothing list with linen/bedding needswill be sent in the spring. Baggage is limited to one suitcase and oneovernight weekender bag. Laundry facilities are available in theresidence halls.

DO I NEED BAGGAGE AND/OR PROGRAM TUITIONINSURANCE? While not mandatory, it is suggested that studentsprotect themselves against loss/theft of baggage or personalbelongings. Summer Study Programs cannot be responsible forlost/stolen/damaged items. In the unlikely event that unforeseencircumstances force a student’s withdrawal from the program, insurance to protect your tuition payment is offered at an additionalcost (optional).

IS FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE? Partial tuition scholarshipsare available for a limited number of students who are academicallyqualified but financially unable. Personal and business (if applicable)tax returns for the current and past year must be submitted.

The Personal Edge...The Athletic Edge...

The Academic Edge...

Don’t turn your back

on an experience this good!

...all a part of a summer at PSU!

35S U M M E R S T U D Y P R O G R A M S

To the Penn State Summer Study Staff,

Things have settled down into a fall rhythm here and I

finally have time to write and compliment each and every

one of you on a terrific job this past summer.

My daughter, Jennifer Ross, thoroughly enjoyed her experience

this past summer. We found the Summer Study Program to

be the perfect mix of supervision and independence for our

almost 16 year old. She was able to enjoy everything State

College had to offer in her time there (well, almost everything

within limits!), while gaining the confidence needed to live

independently in a college environment.

Scholastically, she loved her psychology class and her

enrichment Fashion & Design class and did very well in both

of them, further instilling the self-esteem necessary for a

successful college career and future.

Socially, she has made many terrific friends who will remain

just that for many years to come. I can't tell you how many

hours have already been spent text messaging, cell phoning,

IM'ing and meeting up with the people she met at Penn State

this summer.

I have nothing but the highest praise for the program. Thank

you all again for a wonderful summer. Jen is now a much more

mature, self-confident young woman than she was when we

put her on the bus in June. I would highly recommend your

program to anyone who asks (and I already have).

Mrs. Debra Ross
